Try something new and exciting! Feel the benefits of exercise! Reasonable prices! Information and advice on your wellbeing Different Locations around Central ! Welcome…

Central Bedfordshire welcomes you to our third edition of the Fit4Life 50 plus booklet.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

January can be a bit gloomy for some but it is also a great chance for you to make some healthy choices and set some New Year’s resolutions. Our booklet can help kick start the process by introducing you to a range of healthy activities in your area and lots of hints and tips to guide you along the way to a healthier and active lifestyle.

It is recommended that adults aim to be active on a daily basis. Over a week activity should total at least 150 minutes (2½ hours) of moderate intensity activity, in sessions of 10 minutes or more – one way to approach this is to do 30 minutes 5 days a week.

All our courses are led by fully trained and enthusiastic leaders, ensuring a fun and safe environment.

Some of the activities in this booklet have been part subsidised by partnership funding.

Walk 4 Health programmes run throughout Central Bedfordshire. These individual programmes are led by trained volunteer Health Walk Leaders.

Health walks are regular walks which are free and open to all – though aimed particularly at people who are presently doing little or no exercise – and usually last for about an hour.

People are encouraged to walk at their own pace, safe in the knowledge that they are walking with trained leaders.

At the end of the walk we encourage walkers to socialise – therefore many of our walks end where people can have a coffee and a chat.

20 www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/healthierlifestyles Fit4life 50 plus 21 Becoming forgetful does not necessarily mean that you have dementia

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life.

Diagnosing dementia is often difficult, particularly in the early stages; your GP is the first person to consult. The GP may then refer the person being diagnosed to a specialist consultant at the Memory Assessment Clinic.

Dementia can affect the whole person, how they live their life and their plans for the future. But dementia does not change who you are and should not stop you from enjoying life with family and friends. There are some practical things that you can do to help you live as well as possible:

• keeping busy with activities you enjoy • stay social and try not to become isolated • look after your physical and mental health to ensure you can live a full life

There are a range of services and activities available for people with dementia and their carers in Central Bedfordshire. For more information contact your GP or look on the Central Bedfordshire Council website : www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/dementia

You can also find out more by contacting the Central Bedfordshire Council on 0300 300 8303

22 www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/healthierlifestyles Why bowl?

Bowls is a wonderfully simple game that can be enjoyed equally by all ages and abilities. Bowls only takes a short period of coaching and practice to be able to play – that’s when the fascination starts because of the level of skill and precision that can be achieved over time, enough to satisfy the most modest of sporting ambition or the most demanding.

Bowls is not physically demanding and is relatively cheap compared to other sports and leisure activities. It is common for individuals to start bowling later in life, some after retiring from other sports others simply to enjoy the social side of bowls. The age of those who are regularly enjoying their bowls extends to well over eighty years old. Bowls is truly a sport for all.

WARNING Bowling can be addictive, You will probably make many new FRIENDS, Have a lot of FUN, feel FITTER & wonder why you did not take up bowls before Make many new Friends, have Fun, Feel Fitter and… ……wonder why you did not take up bowls before.

The outdoor bowls season runs from Early May to late September. Shefford bowls club offers introductory coaching for beginners and an active bowls programme and social events.

Contact Alison 01462 811548. Sheffords Bowls Club is located on Hitchin Road Shefford. Next to the STMA Hall and playing fields.

Fit4life 50 plus 23 Testimonial

“I have taken part in two of the activities funded and run by Central Bedfordshire Council. I did 10 weeks of dance machines and completed a 5 week archery course. On the archery course I learnt how to construct and string the bow, different techniques for aiming and trying a long bow robin hood style. All the staff were lovely and we were helped individually if we hadn’t got the technique.

At the end we got a Beginners Safety certificate that allows you to sign up to any archery club and a temporary month’s membership to practice on a Thursday.

I finally found a sport that I am good at and can do and hope to join the club in the future. Thank you for the opportunity.
