This year the theme was centered on our parish mission state- ment and how that has affected our young people and their vision for their future. Six essays were sent in; two of the youth will each receive a $500 scholarship. I think they all deserve to be heard! Here are some of their words: “Sharing my faith with others as a CORE leader continued to strengthen my rela- tionship with Christ. I became accountable for myself and my actions, knowing that I was someone’s role model. But being a member of St. Tim’s made it easy. For the first time ever I enjoyed going to Mass, and I understand its purpose and sig- nificance.” “The most important aspect of our parish mission statement is that we serve to make a difference. We do not serve to self-aggrandize or to earn respect; we serve to impact the lives of others in a meaningful manner.” “I might be reluctant to leave home and start this new, unknown chapter in my life, but above all I am excited to seize the opportunities the Lord is giving me and to take action, spreading His love and embodying discipleship.” “I see the parish mission statement as a personal challenge to live a saintly life in a time when faith can be at its weakest point. It’s a time of unprecedented change both in my life, and in the lives of my friends. Yet amongst this collective uncer- tainty I’ve been able to hold onto a steadfast truth – the kind which gives me strength and gives me hope to make positive change within my community. It’s a simple truth, and it can be defined in two simple words: Love does.” “Although I may not know what God has in store for me, I know that he is prepar- ing me for this journey of life. I know he is guiding me towards my goals while making me stronger through the process. St. Timothy parish gave me the floor plan of how to be a disciple.” “It is with apprehension and trepidation that I prepare for what lies ahead in this new chapter of my life. I know that college can cause one to question their calling and ability to meet the demands of a rigorous academic schedule. However, I have learned that God knows me better than I know myself. He knows the path which lies ahead, and I need to have trust in Him and His knowledge of my gifts and my ability to make a difference in the lives of others.” Thanks be to God for the young people of our parish who are striving to become lov- ing disciples of Jesus Christ who make a difference. Our Mother’s Day card fundraiser raised $1404,thank you so much for your support! We still need to raise about $2,200 to reach our goal of $3,600. Cards are $5 each and consist of original cover artwork designed by talented teen artists from our parish. There will be a selection several different cards and donations are also welcome. Please be generous in your support of our young people. Father’s Day cards will be on sale after all the Masses June 2-3, and in the front office thereafter. Thank you for your support!     MAKING FRIENDS WITH THE BIBLE #10 Are You a Paul or a Timothy? By David Carlson One of the most dramatic events in the New Testament is the story of Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. Luke, the author of the Acts of the Apostles, gave three accounts of this life-changing moment in the life of Paul. Paul in his letter to the Galatians also described this event. To this day, reading about Paul’s conversion makes Christians pause in wonder at the mercy of God. Saul/Paul (the first being his Jewish name, the second being his Greek name) was one of the leaders of the persecution of the Christians in Jerusalem. He is listed as one of those present at the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, who was the first martyred Christian. After that, Paul takes the job of a type of religious bounty hunter, tracking down Christians and bringing them back for trial in Jerusalem. As someone studying to become a rabbi, Paul thought he was serving God by fighting against the new heretical movement, the Christians. It was on one of these missions to round up Christians that his life was abruptly changed. He was knocked from his horse and heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Paul asked the identity of who is speaking to him and heard, “I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting.” At this point, the world that Paul understood was changed. He realized that the Christians whom he was rounding up for trial were right about Jesus while he had been terribly wrong.

[This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845).
