FROM THE PRESIDENT... Hi WPH families,

Round 8 is now behind us, we are half way through the season if you can believe that! A big congratulations to the whole club on the weekend as we supported the Breast Cancer Association and managed to raise $750 collectively across the day culminating in another huge After-match! On the night, the Under 14/16 girls age group hosted what was close to our biggest after-match ever, where we celebrated our girls involvement in our club across all age groups. A huge thanks to Fiona Froelich for coming up with the idea to celebrate our girls football and raising funds for the Breast Cancer Association and also with Craig Hall producing a great video showing interviews of our female players and coaches.

We also presented life membership to one of our great past members, Matt Webb. We normally present life membership at our Dinner Dance however Matt couldn’t be there on the night so we had a number of his friends attend on the night. Matt has been a member since 2008, coached from 2010 till 2012, was on the general committee from 2012, president from 2013-14, vice president 2015 and became an SMJFL board member in 2016 till now. Matt has also been a sponsor of the club since 2009 (Malvern Autotech). A worthy recipient of life membership of our great club!!

Our biggest night of the year is fast approaching, the WPH Dinner Dance on Friday June 22. Bookings are now coming in via the link below. We are asking if you are planning to come and haven’t booked yet to please book by Sunday 17th June so we can organise numbers for the night. The night is totally aimed at raising much needed funds for the club an ultimately for our kids playing footy for the WPH’s, please try to make the effort to come along if you are free and bring as many friends along as you can, whether they are from your team or elsewhere, all are welcome. Book your tickets at https://www.jotform.com/wphawks/2018-annual-dinner-dance

Enjoy the long weekend off and see you all the following week for round 9!

EK Financial Group Under 8s

Coach: Denis Irvine Coaches Award: Archer Hjorth & Caleb Sims Goal scorers: Caleb Sims 2, Blake Purvis, Lucas Cassella, Peter Siderellis 1 each

This week, the intrepid adventurers of the Under 8s ventured to Ormond on a beautiful but freezing morning. With our 3 players arriving from the Under 9s starting on the bench, our Captains for the day, Hugh Hockley and Angus Lord kicked to what we thought was the scoring end. This proved to be a slight miscalculation and we were staring at a 2 goal deficit at quarter time.

The next 3 quarters were exactly what we have been working towards, with the team working hard at each contest to win the ball and then clear to a teammate in a better position. Coaches medal winner Archer Hjorth was playing like a man possessed and competing at every contest, while our other medal winner, Caleb Sims snagged 2 goals to give us the lead which we never surrendered.

The most pleasing aspect of the game was our never-say-die attitude after a poor start, to work hard, get ourselves back into the game, and ultimately taste the choccies. Even more pleasing was the offer to have a week off training refused by all players, sorry to all the Mums and Dads!!

Thanks as always to all my parent helpers who make the job a pleasure. Go Hawks!!!

ESPA Under 9 Brown

Captains: Brendan, Charlie Coaches Award: Brendan, Kael, Kristian Master: Brodie

A great afternoon for footy, we played Ormond at home at Lum. We’re getting used to the warm afternoon games, much better once the frost has burnt off the ground.

After a big week on the training track with a focus on defensive pressure the Hawks came out fired up. We got a quick clearance out of the middle from Peyton that resulted in an early goal to Kael. The team were defending well with the backline being led by Jayden. William took a great defensive mark and then minutes later Sathil’s opponent took a mark and was trying to play on to his team mate, Sathil expertly manned the mark and wouldn’t let him past, and then was able to get a finger-tip to the kick to save a goal, well done Sathil. Kael was everywhere causing havoc up forward and the boys were using handball very well, Brodie fed a nice one out of a pack and Charlie rocketed a 10m handball forward to his team mate.

The highlight of the day was a play where the ball was kicked into our forward line, the ball was picked up by an opposition defender. He was gang tackled by Zach, Brodie and Darcy, Zach got a quick kick forward to Darcy who had run on, he marked and saw Kristian alone in the goal square, he fired a pass to him and he turned around and drilled it. A great team goal from defensive pressure. Another great play later on where Denzel kicked a great pass to Matt who kicked perfectly to William who then handballed to Peyton resulting in another team goal to Cael. Kristian was everywhere in the second quarter, kicking his third just before half time. The second quarter was our best for the year, I counted 13 team tackles, a brilliant effort.

Luca, Noah and Josh worked hard all day, tackling hard, keeping their head over the ball and Cael had a great game and was able to stop a certain goal by cleverly rushing it through. Darcy did some great defending today, he made several spoils, took a few marks and was able to use his long kicking to clear the ball from the backline. Lachie enjoyed his first game and in the last HAWKTALK ROUND 8 MATCH REPORTS

quarter kept his head over the ball and earned a free, he went back and kicked a long ball to Charlie who was able to snap a nice goal. Brendan had his best game today, he made multiple spoils and tackles and got quite a few kicks. Brodie had an amazing game, he made 8 tackles and had a heap of kicks, he really threw himself in and was the inaugural winner of the Tackle Master award.

A fantastic team game from the boys, great to hear them belt out the song at the end as well! A big thank you to Peyton, William and Denzel from the under 9 Golds for filling in for us today. Go Hawks!

Under 9 Gold

Coach: Kristian Dow Medal Winners: Milan Grancaric & Jake Hall

On Sunday the Under 9 Golds took on Bentleigh Jnrs at Bentleigh’s ground. Conditions were extremely cold – 4 degrees when we arrived for an 8:30 start. Christian was captain for the day and helped get the boys going early. There were some great plays early in the game, Logan tackling strong, Nate & Milan linking up well and moving the ball quickly and an early opportunity for Josh to kick his first goal after a good mark. In the 2nd qtr the boys continued to work on the things we’ve been practising, Harrison applied a great tackle, the handballing from Oliver and Peyton in the midfield bringing others into the game, William and Andrew supporting when the ball was there to be won. The qtr capped off by a great goal to Henry. The 3rd qtr saw the Bentleigh on the attack, but our backline stood up well with the pressure. Max nullified their dangerous forward, Benjamin and Lachie applied some great tackles and Nathan prolific in keeping the ball moving forward. The last qtr saw a great goal to Angus, Denzel tackling and running hard when he had possession and Jake in and under the packs firing out handballs to teammates. I’m really proud of the boys, their efforts and willingness to practise the skills we’ve been teaching them! Its great to see them improving every week. Thanks for the 3 under 8’s for filling in! Go Hawks!

Waverley Warriors Under 10 Girls

Coach: Ange Athanasopoulos Coaches Award this week went to Alexis

The girls played locally this week with a very foggy start to the morning. It was a challenging side and defiantly got them working hard. They played great in midfield and forward, but the defence was not at its strongest point, but overall they had a really challenging game and defiantly put in a great effort - looking forward to some harder training in the next few weeks and a well deserved long weekend. Thanks again girls for putting in 100% effort yet again. Go Hawks !!!

UNDER 10 BROWN

Coach: Andrew Tonkin Coaches Award: Kaden Mastromanno

This week was a chilly morning game at Lum Reserve to face Beaumaris.

With the fog hanging around things were very cold, the boys took a bit of warming up as the opposition pushed our backline from the first ball up. Logan and Nicholas worked well from centre half back clearing best they could under pressure.

Our centre line combined with Levi and Kaden working hard in the contest, with Jett and Oliver S running off to clear our boys gave all to get the forwards the ball. HAWKTALK ROUND 8 MATCH REPORTS In the second the boys stepped it up and pushed the ball forward. Cameron had a fantastic play on goal running of the mark to put it through. Will made a great stoppage at half back and pushed forward to set up Cooper with an awesome play to be reward a major.

Hayden was strong through the backline in the third and made some great clearances. Some action came into our forward line, Kaden found the ball and did his all to have a couple of attempts at goal, these efforts giving him a well-deserved Coaches award.

In the fourth, the boys began to step up. Samuel did a great job in the contest with 2nd and 3rd efforts giving everything he had in the tank.

Overall it was a consistent game filled with effort and team work, our boys did their best to challenge a strong and clean opposition. Go Hawks!

Mount Waverley Dental U10 Gold

Coach: Ryan Hammond Coach’s Awards: Sam Campbell, Lucas Buckley

It was a freezing morning on Sunday up against St.Kilda. However we were lucky to be playing later in the morning once the fog had cleared a little.

Not sure it was the cold or not but the boys started a little slowly this week and we were behind the eight ball before we knew it. Still the boys fought on well. The backline did their best with Will H taking a couple of strong marks and hitting team mates with his kick outs and Lucky was his usual self, using his pace to gather the ball and kick out of defence.

The second was much better for the boys and Lucas started to find the ball, his attack on the ball and overhead marking was great and he earned himself one of the coach’s awards. Baden was fantastic through the midfield, his aggression at the ball was exactly what we spoke about before the game. Charlie worked really hard through the midfield and got himself a number of kicks and Alexander continued his hardness at the ball also. Ben as always, did a great job as the sweeper in defence and repelled their forward entries at will.

The third was our best quarter by a long way, with the midfield starting to get on top led byJoedan who took a couple of awesome pack marks. Ashton also took some great grabs and had plenty of the ball and Sam seemed to be in the right spot whenever there was a kick out of the pack and as a result took a number of good marks and found a heap of the ball. He was a deserved winner of the other coach’s award. With the midfield on top the forwards did their best and when Ryan found himself alone between the square and the 50 meter arc, he snapped truly and we were on the board. Will R continued his good run of form and looked likely on a number of occasions, he was unlucky to be called play on after a mark otherwise would have gone back and have a shot. He’s hard work will pay off soon enough. Gabriel was also unlucky not to score, when managed to earn himself some good possessions.

The last quarter was another good one, with Ethan putting his body on the line to get himself a kick and Jai always giving his all with his attack on the ball. Oliver got a knock on his sore knee and so was moved forward, where he nearly jagged a couple with some shots from long range. Leonardo continued his improvement and I love to see him wrench the ball from opposition arms. Lewis also had another good game and does a good job locking down an opposition player when in defence. If we can just put together a 4 quarter effort next game, I don’t think we are far away. The boys can have a rest over the long weekend and come back already to go. Go Hawks and Go Gold!

Coach – John Le Grand Coach Award- Corey Lewis Team Player of the Week- Charles Mearns Match Score: Waverley Park Hawks 3.1.19 defeated by East Brighton 12.17.89 Best Players- Haebich, Le Grand, Petrelis, Lewis, Van Rest, Mearns Goals – Barbis 1, Le Grand, Haebich 1

On a day where we celebrated 3 players playing their 50th games. Harry Haebich, George Van Rest & Prinav Misra. All 3 over there last few years have developed and continue to develop into very good footballer for the club and who’s families are always prepared to help on a weekly basis making sure the boys can take the field. Well Done toHarry, George & Prinav on your 50 games and thank you to your parents for your contributions so far to the early stage of your Career.

The game was top v bottom so the challenge as always, a big one, but as we say to the boys “Never back away from a challenge”. We knew we had to break it down and the first step was to start well and win the first quarter. In extremely foggy condition the start wasn’t the greatest and East Brighton showed us why they were a top side and completely out played us in the first term.

The second term would have to be our most disappointing and frustrating for the year, with many going into their shells and East Brighton dominated. The only positive to take out of the quarter was the very late goal we kicked which showed us signed we could turn things around. The third term was a little better with the effort lifting and some momentum starting to swing our way. By ¾ quarter time we were well and truly out of the game but the boys were not prepared to give up. They set themselves the challenge. “Keep East Brighton Goalless and Win the Quarter”.

The last quarter the boys did exactly what they set out to do. Playing on our terms and winning the footy by being first in for the ball and using the space of the ground. We ended up winning the last quarter as well as keeping the opposition goalless. Well done boys on achieving your goal that you set and taking some positives out of a tough day.

Thanks, must go to the Under 11 Gold boys for helping us out Isaac Stylianou, Noah Barbis, Angus Hayes & Hudson Heath.

Melbourne Paella Under 11 Gold

Coach: Shane McCluskey Award: Kendrick Young Match Score: WPH 10-12-72 defeated St.Pauls 00-00-00 Goals: Jack E 3, Thomas 2, Kenny 1, Izac 1, Josh 1, Jack C 1, Luca 1

Whilst the score indicates a one sided affair, the game itself was a different story. St.Paul’s were quite hard at the contest with vigorous tackling and pressure, but our boys were able to both withstand that pressure as well as play some really impressive footy.

We had Thomas as our captain for the day and he also played his 50th game. He celebrated in style with some fantastic pack marking efforts, both overhead and chest and capped off his day with two good goals. He had two other mates that also burst through their banner to celebrate their previous 50 games in Izac and Nash. Izac had a great day with numerous outstanding individual efforts in repelling the opposition and thrusting us forward, while Nash showed what a strong young man he is with some excellent hard attack on the footy and two very courageous marks as well.

Cameron blossomed when moved to the midfield and gave off two pin point handballs through traffic to team mates in best position, which allowed us to push forward where Luca was waiting and took a great grab and from a near impossible angle, went back and slotted a sensational career first goal. Joshua wasn’t going to be left out of the goal party and roved the pack beautifully HAWKTALK ROUND 8 MATCH REPORTS to swoop on a loose ball, dash away from pursuers and bang one over the goal umpires hat.

Zaki was the ultimate professional this week in his role as ‘centre man’. His concentration and perfect position play was fantastic to see. Noah took a leaf from Zaki’s book and was constantly leading from the front, not only in getting the hard ball, but leading his team mates in manning up and “building the wall”. Kenny was all over the ground again and somehow, managed to be on hand to slot a sneaky goal, whilst supposedly playing in the Back pocket, in an award winning effort. Hudson again showed how you can both man up and apply tackles whilst still getting numerous possessions yourself, improving greatly week to week. Jack E was our key driving force early and kept up his great form, with some enormously high and long kicking and ability to break the lines. Harley has made a fantastic return to team footy and had a great game again this week and has really started to reach his potential and good to see him enjoying his footy. Brandon laid some hard crunching tackles while still gaining marks and delivering perfectly to players like Mitchell who constantly provided us with an option in space and also picked out Hawk team mates fruitier afield with ease.Angus played strongly through injury and took some excellent marks under pressure and in amongst big packs, at at both ends. Andre seems to have found his feet now and continues to contribute to the team and played a key defensive role as well as in the midfield. John showed his sure hands down back and used the ball with great precision when delivering further afield, which was similar to Jack C who had another great game winning one on ones and added another goal to his total in the process. Teage not only employed some tight checking on his opposite number, but also gained possessions across half back, in concert with Luke who then relished the move forward and looks to be a natural fit in front of goal in a good display of versatility.

What impressed Brendan and I the most, was our ability to stay disciplined and keep our focus on the ball and not the man, whilst still playing great footy. Well done boys!

AAV Tiling Under 12 girls match report

Match Score: Waverley Park Hawks 5.6.36 Defeated St Peters 5.4.34 Goal-kickers: Stasia, Piper, Zoe, Chloe, Olivia Coached award: Stasia Best: Everyone

From the outset it seemed like today was going to be a perfect day. Sun was shining and the girls were fit and firing. We kicked the first goal and got some confidence going into the second quarter. Our second quarter was probably our worst for the day, although we were scoring, our opposition was as well.

We weren’t doing the little things well enough. In the third quarter we played the sort of footy that makes a coach proud. Hard at the contest, running both ways and reading the play. We were down by 6 points at three quarter time and the girls were red faced and tired, but to win game you must win four quarters of football, so I asked the girls to dig deep. And deep they dug! We started the quarter with a few vital points and the scoreline got VERY close. We had the ball locked in our forward line but every time the opposition got the ball clear Stasia was standing there ready to mark it. Finally in the dying minutes of the quarter the winning goal came off the boot of Piper! All the girls had to do was maintain possession until the siren went and when it finally did there were a few very tired girls. It was a very well deserved win for not only the girls but also our parent group.

Although the game was won in the final minutes the girls were setting themselves up to win the entire game. Our positioning on the ground was sensation and our tackling was ferocious as always. This fantastic setup was heavily influenced by one player in particular. Today Stasia was everywhere, especially in marking contests. Although she’s small she always backs herself in to take the mark and that she did. In the final quarter she rebounded the ball countless times and was a big factor in us winning the game.

Team wins are the best wins, and this week it was a pretty good win. GO Hawks! HAWKTALK ROUND 8 MATCH REPORTS Under 12 Gold

Today was a great team effort. All players contributed to a solid win. We have had real trouble scoring but today we fixed that problem. Our full forward Franki kicked 8 goals. His hard work at training has really paid off. Our mid field dominated and gave our forwards a steady supply. Our backs repelled a number of attacks. Zac Hall slotted into the back flank role perfectly. Cooper & Tom are our two hard nuts that were at the bottom of the packs all day. Luke was busy all day. In two weeks we face the top team and our boys are ready to dish up some real hard footy.

Mount Waverley Dental - Under 12 Brown

Coach: Paul Rice Captain: Josh White Coaches Award: Will Tan Son WP Hawks – 4.0.24 defeated by St Bedes Tigers– 7.9-51

Our round 8 game was against the St Bedes Tigers at Columbia and our Captain for the game was birthday boy, Josh White.

At first it was literally difficult to watch the game due to the low fog covering the ground and obscuring our view of the play, but eventually it lifted to reveal a spirited game between two good teams. St Bedes had the scoring end in the first quarter and whilst the hawks were competing well in the contests and winning plenty of the ball, St Bedes managed to score three goals against our single goal, courtesy of Will Rice.

In the second quarter the Hawks “stepped up” and were more effective in the attack with better ball movement, linkages and teamwork which was rewarded with a couple of very handy goals from Biraj and Isaac. The boys increased their pressure and were more solid in defence, thanks to more desperate efforts from all the defenders Ben, Josh, Will T, Oscar, Thom D, Kai and Jared. This kept the Tigers scoreless, which levelled the scores going into the half time break.

The third quarter was an important one for the Hawks as they had the task to minimise St Bede’s goals at the scoring end. They were up for the challenge and managed to keep St Bedes to only one goal and three points in the quarter. The Hawks showed great fight and late in the third quarter exhibited teamwork and tenacity to push the ball into the forward line against a solid defence, resulting in a wonderful goal from Josh before the siren rang.

The Hawks went into the final quarter only four points down and with an opportunity to knock off the third on the ladder. St Bedes however had other plans and took their game to another level with their heightened speed and ball movement, and ability to make space and keep possession. By this stage the Hawks were worn out from three huge quarters and struggled to keep up with the Tigers who piled on three goals in a short space of time and ran away with the game.

Will Tan Son earned the coaches award for his efforts to enter the packs and win the hard-ball and for trying hard to support his mates in the contest. The Hawks played a very spirited game and until the last quarter proved yet again that they are a very competitive team that can match teams higher on the ladder.

Another great effort boys. Just remember that to win games like this, it’s important to be strong at the fundamentals such as discipline in defence, maintaining pressure, winning the ball and keeping possession. Go Hawks. Coach: Anthony Froelich Coaches Award: Brady E, Damon Match Score:Waverley Park Hawks 8.13.61 defeated Dingley 3.3.21 Goals: Harry S 3, Pat 2, Brady E, Jack, Mitch Best Players: Peter, Harry S, Pat, Cam, Shilo, Damon, Brady E, Plow, Dylan

We took on Dingley for a top of the table clash at their home ground. Nathan and Dylan led the way with some great attack on the ball. Brady E and Connor centred the ball as per team instructions while Pete was attacking everything from half back. He found Cam on a long lead who then found Pat for a welcome return to the team and a nice opening goal. Pat started to find some touch and kicked a second for the quarter while Brady E chimed in with a lovely goal on the angle after a free kick. Harry S and Shilo were working well in the midfield to provide us with plenty of drive and we had a pretty solid first quarter. Harry C moved into the ruck in the 2nd quarter and started to get his hands on the ball. We saw a couple of great plays from the backline to forward line as the team remained disciplined and maintained position which allowed the quick ball movement. One of these resulted in a goal to Harry S while more great team play from Shilo and Jack to centre balls to players in better positons also resulted in goals. The young Hawks had put together their best half for the year putting on 6.5 to Dingley’s 1.1.

The second half started in a positive fashion with Plow mopping up across half back and Dan returning from injury taking some nice marks. Damon was also racking up possessions and doing a great job defensively as our opponents came out with plenty of run. Unfortunately our good work in front of goal didn’t translate into the 3rd quarter as we kicked a wasteful 5 behinds. The boys regrouped at the break and managed to get plenty of the ball in the last quarter. Harry S finished off with some strong marks up forward and converted two goals while Nick was lively across half forward. A pretty good four quarter effort from the boys with some improvements in front of goal to work on in the coming weeks.

Coach: Matt Foale Coaches Award: Jacob Sims, Reece Anderson Captains: Jacob Sims, Luke Camerotto Match score: Hawks 5.7.37 drew with Caulfield Bears 5.7.37 Best: Jacob, Reece, Spencer, Josh, Seamus, Patrick, Andreas. Goals: Jacob 2, Patrick 2, Attilio.

Round 8 was our second game in Division 4 and after going down by a couple of goals last week, the boys were fired up to bounce back in our last game before the bye. After some great pre-game words by our captains, Jacob and Luke, the boys got right down to business. We dominated the contest from the first bounce, kicking the first major for the day, we were ferocious and unrelenting at the contest. Caulfield had some good runners and were working hard, but our boys kept chipping away. The second and third quarters were some of the best football we have played this year, Zach opened the play up with a magnificent lateral release from half back that resulted in a forward entry, Attilio was strong in the pocket, snagging one off the ground after a fantastic second effort. Patrick loved his time in the forward 6, roving the packs and presenting well, he was rewarded with his efforts with a magnificent goal from a long range set shot from centre half forward. Herbie showed his poise across the back line in his first game back for the club this year, marshalling the troops and making sure the Bears were under pressure. Reece and Andreas were using their pace and dash to their advantage and running off their opponents well, creating opportunities for us time and time again.

Ryan was positioning himself beautifully off the contest and was able to find time and space to HAWKTALK ROUND 8 MATCH REPORTS gather and pump the football forward, while Jacob controlled the forward line and proved to be a real handful for the bears backline. Seamus enjoyed the responsibility of kicking out in the second half and showed how strong he is with some great long clearances. We had one percenters and contributors all over the ground, it felt a little strange coming away with a draw after being up by 2 goals at the end of the 3rd quarter, however with 2 injuries late to Harper (concussion) and Reece (ankle), the boys did extremely well and should be super proud of their effort, the bears expected to walk over us, but they found a ferocious and focussed side, keep it up boys! This week’s question for the boys to win a prize, who is the youngest Socceroo to ever be selected in the world cup squad? Have a great week, Go Hawks!

Round 8 from Columbia and a bit of a flat start from the girls but to their credit turned it around and started to play the sort of footy we want to be playing and it payed off at the end of the day with another hard fought win. Madilyn C has become such an important part of the team, her running and tackling is superb and she just gets better every week. The general (Charlotte) was just super down back yet again, there is not much that gets past her she reads the play so well and knows just when to play on,she even snuck forward and got herself a goal this week.WELL DONE CHARLOTTE

This week we took on top of the ladder side East Brighton. We got off to a good start kicking 2 goals in the opening term and after a good training session this week flowed on into the game.

Half time saw us 4 goals down and our best first quarter for the season was to come. Running through the midfield and kicks down the corridor to Dylan saw us produce a 4 goal third quarter. The boys were pumped up for a win going into the last term with BJ controlling the backline and Cochrane and Vormwald giving us run in the midfield we were set for a big finish. The last term didn’t quite play out the way we wanted it to with East Brighton getting on top and finishing us off by 13 points. Signs of positive confident footy was played this week and we are training really well and improving each week. If we keep up of effort and intensity a win is not far away boys! Great conditions for football. Barely a breeze, sun was shining and the ground was in good nick. Again the boys lead from the start, commanding the game play and setting the tone. The midfield continued to dominate and provide plenty of opportunity for our wings and forwards. The Vampires were shell shocked from the start. Our defence held extremely well and held the Vampires goalless until the final quarter, and only allowing 3 scoring shots for the game. Tough to get through!

Our forwards had plenty of the ball and had plenty of opportunities throughout the game. We ended up having 13 individual goal scorers for the game - the most yet. However we had more behinds than goals - only by 1, but it’s a pattern that’s emerging from the previous game as well. Something we’ll work on. The week of clearly didn’t hinder the boys, who were very keen to get back out, and with 6 on the bench showed everyone wanted in on the game. It’s a pity we have another week off this weekend. But it does allow any niggles to heal ready for the following round.

The team is off to a great start this year. We are extremely proud of how they are travelling, and how they conduct themselves during a game and at training. However we must continue to approach each game like it’s a must win, and never take our foot off the gas. Keep up the great work team!

Chesterfield Farm Under 16 Girls

Coach: Nick Thompson Coaches Award: Delaney Gray Match Score: WPH 1.1.7 lost to St Bedes/Mentone 15.23.115 Best: Alahendra, Boribon, Gray, Shaw, Spicer Goal kickers: Shaw

The under 16 Girls hosted St Bedes/Mentone on the weekend in what turned out to be a very difficult day for us. It was obvious from the first bounce that we were going to be up against it again as St Bedes quickly demonstrated their skill and experience. Our girls were a little off their game in the opening quarter also which made for some pretty messy viewing.

I asked them for a big effort at quarter time and while we were still obviously outclassed throughout the day, our girls certainly cannot be accused of tossing in the towel. They showed great character to stick to their task for the rest of the day under very difficult circumstances and we should all be extremely proud of them.

The coaches award for the day went to Delaney Gray who was brave and tenacious all day long as she has been all year. What an asset she has been for our side.

With only one team left to play in the division its safe to say that we probably sit somewhere between div 2 and 3 so this will probably make for a difficult season in terms of results. Therefore our focus needs to remain firmly on the little improvements that our girls can make as a team and individuals and the valuable life lessons that can be learnt from facing adversity. I look forward to helping them grow and develop over the remainder of the season. HAWKTALK
