The essay, entitled "African-American Folklore and Cultural History in the Films of Spike Lee" (Gloria J. Gibson-Hudson), analyzes Lee's filmmaking approach from a cultural and historical perspective. The essay identifies Lee as a contemporary storyteller weaving his tales with the aid of a camera and demonstrates how his film narratives draw on both the historic and contemporary experiences of African Americans. The essay discusses five of Lee's films (made between 1984 and 1991) thematically, categorizing them under intra-racal issues and inter-racial issues. The bibliography (by Grace Jackson-Brown) provides citations from both scholarly and popular literature, encompassing newspaper articles, journal and magazine articles, chapters or sections from books, and reviews of films (most of the citations date from the last 5 years). The extensive 49-page bibliography is intended to be a comprehensive guide to literature that will assist students and researchers with an interest in Spike Lee.

  • JUSTICE What’S the Right Thing to Do?
FARRAR, STRAUS AND GIROUX DISCUSSION GUIDE JUSTICE What’s the Right Thing to Do? by Michael J. Sandel “An intoxicating invitation to take apart and examine how we arrive at our notions of right and wrong.” 978-0-374-18065-2 —Karen Long, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) 320 pages ABOUT THIS GUIDE The topics and questions that follow are designed to enhance your reading of Justice. The first part of this guide contains questions for those who are just starting to think in terms of what the right thing to do is. The second part of this guide contains questions that are more advanced. Kiku Adatto INTRODUCTION What are our obligations to others as people in a free society? Should government tax the rich to help the poor? Is the free market fair? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? Is killing sometimes morally required? Is it possible, or desirable, to legislate morality? Do individual rights and the common good conflict? These questions are at the core of our public life today—and at the heart of Justice, in which Michael J. Sandel shows how a surer grasp of philosophy can help us to make sense of politics, morality, and our own convictions as well. Sandel’s legendary “Justice” course is one of the most popular and influential at Harvard. Up to a thousand students pack the campus theater to hear Sandel relate the big questions of political philosophy to the most vexing issues of the day. Justice offers readers the same exhilarating journey that captivates Harvard students—the challenge of thinking our way through the hard moral challenges we confront as citizens.

He was holding his arms out on either side for balance as he stepped lightly along one of the rails, like someone walking on a tightrope without a net and with miles and miles of nothing underneath him. He was without a shirt and his back was covered in mud. I could barely make out the scar on his left shoulder, but noticed right away that his hands had been painted red. The air was unsettled with yellow dust so that it seemed like there were a thousand tiny fireflies rising up slowly from the ground all around us. I could hear the sirens from far off in the distance as they made their way through town, and I called out to him.

  • 1 Enacting Professionalism
Enacting Professionalism: What Exactly Is It We’re Talking About? Dipesh Navsaria I'd like to begin with a story about a boy named Nikolai. It's adapted from John Muth's picture-book retelling by of a short story by Leo Tolstoy, “The Three Questions”.1,2 Nikolai was a kind-hearted and sensitive boy. He always tried his best to think about others. Unfortunately, his family was quick-tempered and would sometimes hurt his feelings without meaning to. One day, Nikolai came home from school and ran into the kitchen, shouting out “Mom, I'm home” and letting the door slam shut behind him as he usually did. Unfortunately, this was a bad time for this to happen, for his mother was very carefully cutting a cake with a sharp knife. Nikolai's loud entrance startled her and the knife slipped, cutting her finger. Annoyed at the mishap, she yelled at Nikolai. “Nikolai! I cut myself! Couldn't you see that this wasn't the right time?” Upset by his mother's words, Nikolai turned around and ran back out the door, his eyes filling with tears. This was not a good move on his part, because as he ran outside, his plowed straight into his father, who was just coming home, his arms laden with packages. Nikolai and his father both ended up on the ground, boxes strewn all over the ground. “Nikolai! Weren't you looking where you were going?!” “I'm sorry, I had just made Mom upset and—” “Your mother!? You knocked me right over! Can't you see who you should be listening to?!” Nikolai was clearly not having a very good day.

She discovered the world of wildlife rehabilitation when a forester friend asked her to take in a litter of orphaned baby raccoons. Once they entered her life, there was no going back. When Irene and her husband, Gus, moved to New Hampshire, Suburban Wildlife became Winchester Wildlife, since the facility there is housed on over 100 wooded acres in a setting no longer quite “suburban”! Irene served as a board member of the Connecticut Wildlife Rehabilitators Association and was the New England state representative to the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. THE NIGHT SHIFT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Created by Steve Moore • Rob Howard • David Guthrie © 2013 Little Big Stuff Music, LLC Running Time: 39:00 (music begins to “Falafel House”) (Flo begins in the dark, yelling.) FLO: THREE JAVAS! UNLEADED! WHISPER IN THEIR EARS AND KEEP THE COWS IN THE BARN! She is followed by Lydia, a new waitress on her first night, who is frantically trying to keep up.) LYDIA: I’m sorry Flo, what did you just say? FLO: (with only slight impatience) “Javas” are coffees, “unleaded” means decaf, “whisper in their ears” is sweet talk … you know, “with sugar.” LYDIA: Oh, there’s so much to remember! And what is “keep the cows in the barn”? FLO: It means “no cream.” LYDIA: How will I ever remember everything?! FLO: Stick with me, honey, and you’ll pick it up in no time. (with a flourish) It’s another great night shift at the Falafel House! (A customer walks in to the restaurant. Flo sees them and walks briskly over to seat them with Lydia trying to keep up.) For that matter, what is it about fair- ness, generosity, and honesty that makes them right? How come there’s such a difference between the things we feel we should do and the things we feel we shouldn’t? 17 It’s a question I’ve wondered about for a long, long time: What, in other words, makes the good things good and the bad things bad? • Sally Taylor Transcript
Hitting a High Note: Expressing Your Talents in the World Featuring Sally Taylor Musician, Singer/Songwriter, Artist, Founder of Consenses, Daughter, Wife, Mom Hello, Woman on Fire! It’s Debbie Phillips, and welcome to this edition of your Women on Fire membership. In each monthly episode, I interview a woman on the leading edge to learn how she got where she is, what she’s “on fire” about and how she keeps going when things get tough. This includes the inspiration, strategies, support, practices and tools that she’s learned to live her life “on fire” — all so you can use and add to living your own Woman on Fire life. The interview you are about to hear is with 42-year-old singer, musician, artist and entrepreneur Sally Taylor. You may not know her. But you certainly know of her parents — James Taylor and Carly Simon. Sally generously shares about her life as the daughter of famous parents as well as what it’s taken for her to achieve independence and carve out her own path in becoming her own Woman on Fire. In this interview, you’ll learn from Sally: • The path to your big dreams takes many twists and turns, and she shares hers, including running a raw foods restaurant • About her groundbreaking project Consenses, in which she conceived of an idea — inspired by a fable — and decades later transformed it into reality by organizing and collaborating with 150 artists from around the world and how that project is now poised to expand worldwide • The mindset she adopts and how she asks for help when she doesn’t know something in business • The advice her famous parents have given her, and the advice she’s given to them • What you have to do when the “muse” comes calling … and so much more My love and admiration for Sally are quite obvious in this interview.
