We believe passionately in the power of books. We believe that the right book in the hands of the right - child or teenager at the right time can be life- changing. We believe this because we have both seen it happen, time and time again. In this edition of BookFest we have brought The Recommended together the very best children’s and teen books from Reading Guide of the 2007: wonderful books for babies, striking picture Children’s Book Festival books, brilliant books for early readers, gripping novels, poetry and information books for confident readers, and thrilling, thoughtful and important reads for older readers of twelve years and over. Every book in this guide has been read and reviewed by an expert in the field of children’s books. Our review panel is made up of teachers, librarians, booksellers, editors, lecturers, parents, writers and illustrators. They all donate their time on a voluntary basis because, like us, they believe in and love children’s books. We would like to thank them all for their time and dedication. CBI runs the annual prestigious CBI Bisto Book of the Year Awards – Ireland’s leading children’s book awards. In 2005 we piloted a new shadowing scheme as part of the CBI Awards. Each year in excess of 100 books are submitted for these awards. Our panel of judges review all the titles over 6 months and after much heated debate a shortlist is decided on – it is this that forms the basis of the shadowing activities. We began the scheme in 2005 with 12 groups – we have since seen this figure rise dramatically to 140 school and library groups participating across the country. These groups reviewed, evaluated and championed the books on the shortlist, and then selected their own winner. In 2007, as in 2006, the . shadowing groups’ overall winner matched that of the selected judgingThe Boy panel. in the John Striped Boyne Pyjamas won the outright CBI/Bisto Book of the Year Award in 2007 for his title, This programme has proved to be very successful, and we are looking to expand the scheme and encourage more groups to get reading! We are looking for primary and post-primary school groups to participate in next year’s scheme. The time frame involved is as follows – the Awards Shortlist is released in March and the overall Award ceremony and winners announcement is in May. So between March and May our shadowing groups are busy devouring all the titles so they can get voting. To find out more and to request information sheets and registration forms for the Shadowing Programme, call the CBI office on 01 8727475 or email us at [email protected]. • Historical Fiction for Children and Young People: Changing Fashions, Changing Forms, Changing Representations in British Writing 1934‐2014
Historical Fiction for Children and Young People: changing fashions, changing forms, changing representations in British writing 1934‐2014 Ann Christine Clark This thesis is submitted for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Newcastle University Resubmitted July 2015 Abstract In Language and Ideology in Children’s Fiction (1992) John Stephens forecast the demise of children’s historical fiction as a genre on the grounds that both history itself and the humanist values Stephens saw as underpinning historical fiction were irrelevant to young readers in postmodernity and intrinsically at odds with the attitudes and values of literary postmodernism. In fact, by the end of the millennium juvenile historical fiction was resurgent and continues to propagate humanist ideology. This study explores the changing nature and status of the genre as it has been published in Britain since Geoffrey Trease’s ground‐breaking Bows Against the Barons, a left‐wing retelling of the Robin Hood story, was published in 1934. Consideration is given to the relationship between cultural change and the treatment of the structure, themes, settings and characters that typically feature in historical novels for the young. The work comprises an Introduction and three themed case studies based on a character (Robin Hood), a historical period (the long eighteenth century), and a historical event (the First World War). The case studies are used both to chart changes in the nature, quantity, and reception of historical fiction and to demonstrate the extent to which writers have used historical narratives to explore concerns that were topical at the time the books were written.
