Karl Schneider – Rio Marcel Bianchi and the First European Electric Guitar
Karl Schneider – Rio Marcel Bianchi and the first European electric guitar « As he walked by the streets of Basel in 1944 he saw in a music shop window a hollow body guitar with a built-in pickup, a copy of the Gibson played by that American musician he had already heard many times: Charlie Christian. He also bought a black lap-steel built in Zurich, another copy of American Rickenbackers and Gibsons. Bringing them back to France at the end of the war, he was the first French guitarist to play on electric guitars.” Phil Dubois, November 18th 2003 http://minilien.fr/a0lopn Even before we started to work on the book “Guitares Jacobacci, un atelier de lutherie à Paris “ we knew that the guitar that Marcel Bianchi was holding on the first Major Conn RV advertisements issued on Jazz Magazine in 1957 was not a Jacobacci. Not only being such a great luthier and an excellent connoisseur of American brands, Roger Jacobacci was a key authority on European guitar makers of the 50s. As we asked him in April 2005 about Marcel Bianchi’s guitar, he answered with no hesitation “they were Rios, made in Switzerland”. Searching for another guitar, Sacha Distel’s own Jacobacci R. Gimenes, we met Simon Lustigman in January 2008. A professional musician in Paris and Radio-Luxemburg in the 50s and 60s, he was befriended with all the fellow musicians of the time and was also a sale person at the Major Conn shop, rue Dupperé in Pigalle. As we showed him the picture of the guitar player with the fringed jacket he unfortunately didn’t recognize him but confirmed that the guitar was indeed a Rio, made in Switzerland. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. Voices of the Electric Guitar Don Curnow MPA 475 12-12-12 Intro The solid body electric guitar is the result of many guitars and innovations that came before it, followed by the guitar's need for volume to compete with louder instruments, particularly when soloing. In the 1930s, jazz and its various forms incorporated the guitar, but at the time there was no way for an acoustic guitar to compete with the volume of a trumpet or saxophone, let alone with an orchestra of trumpets and saxophones, such as in big band jazz. As a result, amplification of the guitar was born and the electric guitar has been evolving since, from a hollow bodied ES-150 arch-top with a pick-up used by Charlie Christian to the Les Paul played by Slash today. -

WDAM Radio's History of Elvis Presley
Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes. This collection is divided into four parts: (1) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S singles hits in chronological order – (2) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S and U K singles, the original versions of these songs by other artists, and hit versions by other artists of songs that Elvis Presley recorded first or had a cover hit – in chronological order, along with relevant parody/answer tunes – (3) Songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley – mostly, but not all in chronological order – and (4) X-rated or “adult-themed” songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley.
