  • Karl Schneider – Rio Marcel Bianchi and the First European Electric Guitar
Karl Schneider – Rio Marcel Bianchi and the first European electric guitar « As he walked by the streets of Basel in 1944 he saw in a music shop window a hollow body guitar with a built-in pickup, a copy of the Gibson played by that American musician he had already heard many times: Charlie Christian. He also bought a black lap-steel built in Zurich, another copy of American Rickenbackers and Gibsons. Bringing them back to France at the end of the war, he was the first French guitarist to play on electric guitars.” Phil Dubois, November 18th 2003 http://minilien.fr/a0lopn Even before we started to work on the book “Guitares Jacobacci, un atelier de lutherie à Paris “ we knew that the guitar that Marcel Bianchi was holding on the first Major Conn RV advertisements issued on Jazz Magazine in 1957 was not a Jacobacci. Not only being such a great luthier and an excellent connoisseur of American brands, Roger Jacobacci was a key authority on European guitar makers of the 50s. As we asked him in April 2005 about Marcel Bianchi’s guitar, he answered with no hesitation “they were Rios, made in Switzerland”. Searching for another guitar, Sacha Distel’s own Jacobacci R. Gimenes, we met Simon Lustigman in January 2008. A professional musician in Paris and Radio-Luxemburg in the 50s and 60s, he was befriended with all the fellow musicians of the time and was also a sale person at the Major Conn shop, rue Dupperé in Pigalle. As we showed him the picture of the guitar player with the fringed jacket he unfortunately didn’t recognize him but confirmed that the guitar was indeed a Rio, made in Switzerland.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. Voices of the Electric Guitar Don Curnow MPA 475 12-12-12 Intro The solid body electric guitar is the result of many guitars and innovations that came before it, followed by the guitar's need for volume to compete with louder instruments, particularly when soloing. In the 1930s, jazz and its various forms incorporated the guitar, but at the time there was no way for an acoustic guitar to compete with the volume of a trumpet or saxophone, let alone with an orchestra of trumpets and saxophones, such as in big band jazz. As a result, amplification of the guitar was born and the electric guitar has been evolving since, from a hollow bodied ES-150 arch-top with a pick-up used by Charlie Christian to the Les Paul played by Slash today.

  • Product Spotlight Rickenbacker Guitar Wrap(Sales Literature)
Mactac® Product Spotlight Challenge: To bring new life to a damaged Rickenbacker guitar, adding visual appeal and paying tribute to its namesake with a colorful, creative wrap. Customer: Chip Ficyk Application: Electric Guitar Solution: Mactac B•free® GRUV™ GVC929BFD and Mactac® PERMACOLOR® RAYZor™ LF3648G Laminate Project Summary: When a sudden temperature change after a show led to a cracked finish on Mactac technical marketing manager and musician Chip Ficyk’s prized Rickenbacker guitar, he feared it may be a permanent eyesore. The cost to refinish the instrument was high, and thus the damage remained for many years. When Ficyk finally considered selling the instrument, he was struck by an idea: “There are plenty of interesting and non-traditional objects that get wrapped besides vehicles,” he thought. “Why not a guitar?” Ficyk dreamed up a design for a guitar wrap that would stand as a tribute to Eddie Rickenbacker, the guitar brand’s namesake World War I flying ace. The design featured Eddie’s “Hat in the Ring” fighter squadron insignia, and it preserved the propeller-like natural wood look of the guitar. Once the plan was in place, Ficyk excitedly approached Mactac colleague and graphic products expert Jason Yard to discuss the feasibility of a guitar-wrapping job. Most vinyl wrap jobs require some degree of conformability, but a guitar poses a couple of unique challenges. First, the guitar’s face is not flat; it features a “German carve” whereby areas of the sides of the body are lower than the top, as well as other surface variations that make for a challenging application.

  • Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner
Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner Before you attempt to tune any stringed instrument, the intonation should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted to the correct position. If you’ve never used a Peterson tuner before, then it is almost certain that your instrument is not yet correctly intonated and will not sound its best until you address it. Now that you have a Peterson, you can achieve professional quality results with the help of the tips below, and the intonation will be the best it can be on your instrument. You’ll need your Peterson tuner, a short guitar cord, a small screwdriver and a set of new strings. Before starting, find a surface upon which to lay your guitar that is free of any objects which could damage your instrument and cover it with a towel or similar soft material. Remember to tune the guitar in the position in which you would normally play it (i.e. around your neck, supported by a strap), but adjust the bridge of the guitar after laying it on a flat surface. If you tune the guitar while it’s laying flat, gravity will affect the tension of the neck and skew the results. If you adjust the bridge while the guitar is hanging from a strap on your shoulder, there is a risk that the guitar’s finish will be damaged by the screwdriver. If possible, take the opportunity to clean the fingerboard after the old strings have been removed. New strings will stay clean and sound good a lot longer if the fingerboard is free of grime and dirt.
