John Doe - Mr. Handsome - of the deep rich voice, the hard, strong jaw, the angular bass stance and the hot/cool lyrics. Their harmonies - some would say Schoenberg - his partner Exene, of the wailing scream in the night, the clear eyed pinning of American failings, the fine words of Diana Bonebrake love and booze and madness in the midnight dawn of Los Angeles. “Johny Hit and Run Paulene...” and he’s got a sterilized hypo filled with a sex-machine drug, and he only has 24 hours to shoot all Paulenes between the legs. So get busy, boy. And he does. Listen to those words! That naughty, naughty Johny. I love ‘em. And Exene’s “The World’s a Mess, it’s in My Kiss.” I just love that crazy combination: World - Mess - Kiss. And Billy Zoom on guitar, or is that at least 3 or 4 guitars. How does he do it? It’s so massive, so sharp, so bright, so fucking LOUD!!! And he is so silver smooth and cool. Effortless fingering, impeccable on the frets. Doesn’t he ever make a mistake? Is he a flesh and blood Valhalla guitar god? Yeahhh! And who is that madman beating the living shit out those drums? Ladies and Gentleman... D.

    Guitar Virtual Learning Guitar Body Shapes May 14, 2020 Guitar Lesson: May 14, 2020 Objective/Learning Target: What different guitar shapes are there, and what are the differences between those shapes? Warm-Up Activity Watch the following video by YouTuber “Minor7thb5” (which is a music theory reference!). In it, he plays the same piece of music two times with two different guitars. The guitars are of similar build quality and materials, but they are different shapes. One is a parlor guitar and the other is a dreadnaught. How do they sound different to you? These differences are subtle. It might be easier to hear by using headphones. 2nd Warm-Up Activity These were the two guitars he played. The one on the left is an Eastman parlor guitar, the one on the right is a Martin dreadnought. How do they look different? How do they look the same? Guitar Shapes For the lesson today, we are going to do a brief overview of the different guitar shapes and styles you can find today. This lesson will build on the lessons from earlier in the week where we discussed the differences between classical, steel-string, and electric guitars. Now, we will see what different body shapes there are, especially for the steel-string and electric guitars, and what makes them different! A Brief history of guitar shapes The word “guitar” comes from the Greek word “kithara,” which shows up in Greek mythology from thousands of years ago. These stringed instruments didn’t look much like our guitars now, but they were strummed like our guitars.

    Karl Schneider – Rio Marcel Bianchi and the first European electric guitar « As he walked by the streets of Basel in 1944 he saw in a music shop window a hollow body guitar with a built-in pickup, a copy of the Gibson played by that American musician he had already heard many times: Charlie Christian. He also bought a black lap-steel built in Zurich, another copy of American Rickenbackers and Gibsons. Bringing them back to France at the end of the war, he was the first French guitarist to play on electric guitars.” Phil Dubois, November 18th 2003 http://minilien.fr/a0lopn Even before we started to work on the book “Guitares Jacobacci, un atelier de lutherie à Paris “ we knew that the guitar that Marcel Bianchi was holding on the first Major Conn RV advertisements issued on Jazz Magazine in 1957 was not a Jacobacci. Not only being such a great luthier and an excellent connoisseur of American brands, Roger Jacobacci was a key authority on European guitar makers of the 50s. As we asked him in April 2005 about Marcel Bianchi’s guitar, he answered with no hesitation “they were Rios, made in Switzerland”. Searching for another guitar, Sacha Distel’s own Jacobacci R. Gimenes, we met Simon Lustigman in January 2008. A professional musician in Paris and Radio-Luxemburg in the 50s and 60s, he was befriended with all the fellow musicians of the time and was also a sale person at the Major Conn shop, rue Dupperé in Pigalle. As we showed him the picture of the guitar player with the fringed jacket he unfortunately didn’t recognize him but confirmed that the guitar was indeed a Rio, made in Switzerland.
