In conversation with forty-five first- and second-generation Russian intellectuals who relocated from Russia and the former Soviet Union, the researcher investigates transnational Russian identity through ethnographic, auto-ethnographic, and visual anthropology methods. Educated migrants from Russia who shared with the researcher a comparable epistemic universe and experiential perspective, and who were themselves experts on migration, discuss what it means to belong to global transnational diasporas, how they position themselves in historical contexts of migration, and what they hope to contribute to modern intellectual migrant narratives. -

I’m a poet (And you c’ud mak allowances for that!) “Second Hymn to Lenin” (1932)1 Hugh MacDiarmid has never enjoyed the canonical status his acolytes consider his due. Those acolytes have dwindled in number since the 1970s and ’80s, and, as the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century approaches, there is scant evidence of live interest in the poet’s achievement anywhere in the world, least of all his native Scotland. One reason for this is that MacDiarmid, as Seamus Heaney ruefully remarked, “gave his detractors plenty to work with”;2 quite apart from indulging in cultural and political opining sufficiently provocative for the public at large to dismiss him as a crank, he published a dismaying amount of slipshod and even banal verse, mainly in his later years. -

There is a licensed restaurant in the fifteenth-century Cyder House, also available for functions, parties, weddings and meetings. There are nine holiday cottages on the Estate, including three listed historic buildings. Sleeping 2 to 10, they are available for short stays throughout the year. The “Russia 2017: three scenarios” report published in 2007 served as background material and provided a source of stimuli for this work. Examined in the report are both the progress of modernisation in Russia and prospects for the economy all they way up to 2030. A new approach in this work of updating and forecasting has been to seek visions of and scenario themes for development in Russia through a “neighbourly relations in the future” assessment. To deepen its expertise on cross-border neighbourly relations, the Committee visited Imatra and Svetogorsk on 23.4.2010. -

The Image of the Nation as a Woman in Twentieth Century Scottish Literature: Hugh MacDiarmid, Naomi Mitchison, Alasdair Gray Kirsten Stirling In fulfilment of the degreeof PhD University of Glasgow Departmentof Scottish Literature July 2001 Abstract This thesis considersthe use of the allegorical personification of the nation as a woman in the work of the twentieth century Scottish writers Hugh MacDiarmid, Naomi Mitchison and Alasdair Gray. The image of nation as woman, whether as mother, virgin, goddessor victim is widespread in Europeaniconography from the eighteenth century onwards,but is not common in Scotlanduntil the twentieth century. Not only is the objectification of the female figure intrinsic to such imagery objectionable from a feminist point of view, but the female stereotypeswhich surround the figure of the nation are contradictory, and it ultimately reinforces a sexist ideology which constructs women as victims. These political flaws and contradictions are highlighted when the metaphor is consideredin the context of Scotland's peculiar political situation. The three authorsconsidered here exemplify very different usesof the nation-as- woman trope. Comparing their work shows that the image is used differently by male and female writers, and that the changesin both gender politics and nationalist theory during the course of the twentieth century mean that its use in the 1990sis much more self-conscious and parodic than when it is used by Hugh MacDiarmid in the 1920s. Nation as woman is a trope which is much more easily used by male authors, as for example in the work of MacDiarmid and Gray, whereas Naomi Mitchison, in appropriating the voice of mother Scotland,finds problems assertingher own voice as a woman writer in Scotland. -
