Farid Ahmed-Zaid was born in Algiers, Algeria in 1961. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1987 and 1993, respectively. In 1993, he joined Ford Motor Company as a Research Scientist in Intelligent Transportation Systems. From 1993 to 2000, he served as the control systems technical expert as part of the Ford Motor Company Adaptive Cruise Control project team that achieved successful product launch on the Jaguar XKR in 2000. Over the last 17 years, he has focused his research efforts on cooperative driver assistance systems, especially in the V2X area, where wireless communications are used to enable crash avoidance features. Since 2006, he has served as a Principal Investigator under various USDOT-OEM projects that produced multiple industry standards to support V2V safety communications (within SAE). In 2015, he was the recipient of the U.S. Government Special Award of Appreciation for “outstanding leadership and special contributions in the field of motor vehicle safety.”

Jim holds a degree in math from Rose-Human and a Masters in Engineering from MIT. He is an engineering nerd whose path has taken him through swimming, cycling, and triathlons. With more patience, he would have been a physicist; with more talent, a bass guitarist.

Jim’s love for bikes, tech and connecting the dots all mixed together to the inevitable outcome of building high end measurement and data products for competitive cyclists.

In 2006, Jim melded his passions together with the start-up of Quarq Technology, which grew into a world leader in bicycle power meters. After the sale of Quarq to bicycle component manufacturer SRAM in 2011, Jim expanded his product scope to include many additional bicycle data products and the integration of the digital ecosystem around the bicycle.

Jim works and plays in Spearfish, South Dakota with his wife and children.

Jim Misener is Senior Director, Product Management and the Global C-V2X Ecosystem Lead for Qualcomm. He develops and executes Qualcomm’s C-V2X deployment strategy across all global regions and works with roadside and automotive stakeholders and enabling software/hardware stack suppliers and internal teams to accomplish broad C-V2X deployment. Previously at Qualcomm, Jim led the automotive standards team and C-V2X was a major emphasis as well.

In addition to his roles at Qualcomm, Jim serves as a 5GAA board member, ITS California board member, the SAE C-V2X Technical Committee Chair and is active in TRB, which involves serving as an ITS Committee member, Vehicle-Highway Automation committee member and Automated Vehicle Symposium Enabling Technologies session organizer. Jim also serves as an Advisory Council member to the Carnegie Melon University/University of Pennsylvania/Ohio State National University Transportation Center, Mobility 21.

Jim was an early pioneer in vehicle-highway automation and vehicle safety communication at the California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH) at UC Berkeley, starting in the mid-90s. He has served as the PATH Executive Director, Executive Advisor to Booz Allen Hamilton, and an independent consultant with clients ranging from Silicon Valley startups, the automotive industry and Federal and State government agencies. Jim holds BS and MS degrees from UCLA and USC.

Seun Phillips is the Managing Director of PlanetM, an initiative of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Phillips joined MEDC in 2017 as the Managing Director, he is responsible for growing operations, partnerships and technology development within Michigan’s connected autonomous vehicle industry.

Prior to joining MEDC, Phillips served as the Vice President of Education and Engagement at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit, MI. Phillips started his professional career as a Senior Electrical Engineer at Motorola Mobile Devices, where he focused on audio circuitry and accessory compatibility. Phillips went on to co- found the Chicago-based non-profit, Project SYNCERE, with the mission to increase the number of underrepresented and disadvantaged K-12th grade students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

He is actively involved in the development of connected vehicle systems at GM and currently leads the development of wireless-based portable devices that enable safety between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Abolfazl Hajisami is a Senior Research Scientist at Honda R&D Americas, where he is doing research on Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) using Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) and Cellular Vehicle- to-Everything (C-V2X). He received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rutgers University in 2018 and 2014, respectively. Before joining Honda, he was an R&D Engineer at General Motors performing research on scalability of DSRC.

Before his time in Car Sharing he spent 14 Years in BMW’s Safety Team, last being BMW’s Designated Agent in the United States and leading Safety Engineering and ITS Intelligent Information Systems. Before leading the Safety Office in the U.S., his work was focused on Car-to-Car Communication Systems and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Dr. Jan got his Doctorate in experimental nuclear physics from the Johann-Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt while working at CERN in Geneva.

A graduate of Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering, Jake’s trophy case holds more than a dozen of the best awards in the business. He was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year semifinalist in 2011 and Automation Alley’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012. In 2014, Jake took home the Detroit Free Press Automotive Leadership Award in the up-and-coming category.

Jake and his wife, Abbee, are proud to call Ferndale home. When he’s not pushing the envelope in mobility tech, Jake’s life moves to electronic dance beats. He enjoys racing mountain bikes, and big-mountain skiing.
