REVISED Important Update on the Process for Switching Instructional Models Deadline to submit form will be Wednesday, March 3rd at 4:00 p.m. Submissions after this date and time will not be accepted On, Wednesday, February 24th, Superintendent, Tammy Prentiss, sent out an email to all parents in D86 outlining important information that resulted from the board of education meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd. During the board of education meeting, it was shared that we will be changing the plan and process for switching to a different instructional model (i.e., moving from remote to hybrid or hybrid to remote). More specifically, the families of students who are currently hybrid or remote with the option of switching to hybrid will have one final opportunity to select the model they want their children in for the rest of the school year. D86 has created a form that we are asking you to please use to let us know if your student(s) will be hybrid or remote for the rest of the semester. The form, which you can access by visiting https://forms.gle/FX8eyq3mXjLtQeVSA, will be due on March 3 by 4 p.m. We will not accept any submissions after this date and time. If you have multiple students enrolled in the district who are hybrid or remote with the option of switching to hybrid, we ask that you please fill out a form for each child. If we do not receive a completed form for a student, that student will remain in their current model until the end of the school year. All students will begin or continue in the model that was chosen (hybrid or remote) starting on March 8. Thank you for your time and attention to this message. Please contact your child’s school if you have questions or need more information about this process. Hinsdale South will be Conducting Safety Drills Nothing looks the same this year and our safety drills are no different. Over the next couple of weeks in physical education classes students will watch a series of brief safety drill videos. The videos will cover bus evacuation, severe weather, fire, and shelter-in-place scenarios. Students will then have the opportunity to ask their teachers any questions they may have. This will meet the requirements for all drills other than fire. We will still need to conduct live fire drills this Spring. If you have any questions please reach out to our Director of Deans, Dr. Robin Vannoy. Optional Virtual Assembly for National Kindness Month Monday, March 8th 1:30 pm (The picture below showing students is from 2019) We have a special opportunity for all of our students! March is National Kindness Month and during this time we would have provided cupcakes and surprised the students with hand-written post-it notes of positive affirmation on every single locker. Since these things aren't happening this year, due to hybrid learning and Covid-19, we have a special opportunity to share with you to help us celebrate our collective #SouthPride though celebrating kindness and our mission to create a school culture that is inclusive, welcoming and celebratory of every member of our school community. On Monday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m., we will host an optional virtual school assembly, "No Place For Hate" designed to promote the importance of being kind to one another. You can see a promo video of the assembly here: https://nohatetour.com/video/ All students who are interested are encouraged to attend from their homes from 1:30 - 2:45 p.m. on Monday, March 8. We'll start in with a Zoom kick-off from me, watch the virtual assembly, and then return to the Zoom with a discussion facilitated by staff and student leaders from different school organizations committed to promoting a positive school culture through an equity-lens. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend. As a special incentive, the organizers of the assembly are providing five prizes of $100 gift cards that will be distributed in a raffle. You need to be pre-registered to attend and you do that by completing this form: https://forms.gle/u2g8QkiTJsw21bVP9 Once you register, we will email you the Zoom link needed for participation. Hornet Showcase On-line Broadcast on YouTube Friday, March 5, 2021 7:00 - 8:00 pm Click the link below to watch the Showcase: http://bit.ly/SOUTHPRIDE On Tuesday, March 2nd, the Online Auction goes live! Your participation is greatly appreciated and will assist District 86 in understanding the conditions of the building/instruction and guiding improvement. To take the survey please visit: https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/ and select DuPage as the county and Hinsdale South as the school. Black History Month Updates We wrapped up Black History Month this year with morning announcements focusing on African American innovators and educators. House Music was the passing period music of choice. While to those new to the genre, this may have sounded like one long song, a 'house head' can not keep still when the House Music beat drops. The final activity of the month was an HBCU symposium attended by almost 40 students both in person and remotely. Students were buzzing with questions and excitement during and after the session. Thank you to all those who supported the Black History Month celebration during the month. • History of the West Suburban Conference
HISTORY OF THE WEST SUBURBAN CONFERENCE The West Suburban Conference is one of the strongest and most successful organizations of secondary schools in the state of Illinois in both the academic and athletic arenas. From its inception in 1924, the league has maintained a high degree of respect from its opponents because of its outstanding competitive nature. The West Suburban Conference is the fourth oldest Illinois League that is in existence today. Its roots go far beyond the period of formation of the original high school leagues at the turn of the century. The start of the conference is listed as January, 1924, with six charter members competing on only two conference-sponsored sports during that initial year. Back in the early 1910's, the precursor to the conference had early ties to what was known as the Cook County League. The last of their many re-organizational periods took place during this time, with the league reaching a total of twenty- three members; most being from the city of Chicago. At the end of the 1912-1913 school year, the league disbanded and many schools went to an independent status. The Suburban League was formed in September of 1913 with current WSC members Lyons Township, Morton, Oak Park-River Forest and Proviso being four of the original nine members. As these changes were taking place inside Cook Country, The Du Page County Athletic Association underwent its own re-alignment over the next ten years, The original league split into two new conferences in 1922; the Little Seven Conference and the Du Page Valley League.
