Mother Love Bone's appearance at Tommy's Bar in Deep Ellum, Dallas in 1989 bears the early hallmarks of the new rock prophecy in full throttle! This is a prized performance captured by ZRock-FM that reveals an important chapter in alternative rock and the Seattle uprising that gave way to the likes of million-sellers such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice In Chains. Sadly, lead vocalist Andrew Wood wouldn't be around to enjoy the acknowledgements and accolades that Mother Love Bone have received since his untimely death, but we can be grateful for the existence of recordings such as this that allow that offers a rare and precious opportunity to dig into the roots of the Seattle grunge rock story. Klondike very proudly presents the entire original ZRock-FM broadcast of Mother Love Bone live at Tommy's Bar in Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas from 20th April 1989. • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

  • Portland Oregon Episode Summary: in the Late 1980S, Portland Was a Known Haven for Racist Skinheads
IDHH Episode One: Setting the Stage - Portland Oregon Episode Summary: In the late 1980s, Portland was a known haven for racist skinheads. They roamed the core of Portland unhindered. This episode is about Portland back then, in the before, when Portland was a skinhead stomping ground. In this episode we interviewed Chyna, Jason, Jorin and Michael who were all punk rockers in Portland in the 80s and 90s. We also talk to Patrick Mazza, a journalist for the left wing Portland Alliance newspaper, who reminiscences and reads from his music column. We also hear about the recruiting and radicalization of Portland’s skinheads by right wing and white nationalist organizers. We get a little background on Oregon’s racist history and set the stage for understanding the punk scene and neo-nazi violence in the Rose City. ‘Little Beirut I’ protest, Portland Bus Mall, 1989 (photo: Icky A) 1940 1950 1960Background: 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 Portland’s racist history: As a background for this podcast we urge you to learn about the living legacy of white su- premacy woven into this state’s very foundation. We highly recommend Walidah Imarisha’s video “Why Are There No Black People In Oregon” as a great starting point. Briefly, Oregon was founded as an explicit white Protestant home- land, with a constitutional clause forbidding Black people to take up residency in the state; this clause remained within the state’s founding document until repeated requests and demands from Black Oregonians finally enacted successful removal in 2001. Like most other states in the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan was a mainstream force in local white politics, including Klan-endorsed governor Walter M.
