It also contains reviews of the latest studies about Graves and those connected with him or the subjects of his works. There are biographical articles which aim to highlight Graves‟s personal relationship with various literary and other contemporaries, as well as providing personal glimpses of the man behind the poetry, fiction, mythography, scholarship and criticism. The journal is also the publication of the Robert Graves Society and contains information concerning the society‟s activities, including conferences, lectures and other events of interest to those engaged in Graves studies. Gravesiana is now available as an electronic journal (at www.robertgraves.org/iana) and welcomes submissions from all who read its pages: the intention is that it should be a lively and intellectually challenging journal that in some degree reflects the protean spirit of the man to whom it is dedicated. Editorial Dunstan Ward This is the first electronic issue of Gravesiana. Following discussion over several years, the decision to go online was finally taken at the meeting of Robert Graves Society during the 2008 Robert Graves Conference at Oxford. One major advantage is accessibility. In his article on Graves‟s American reputation John Woodrow Presley, Vice-President (Americas) of the Robert Graves Society, „applaud[s] the society‟s growing reliance on the internet. All that can be done […] to help Graves scholarship more rapidly appear in print (especially on the internet) should be undertaken.‟ Online publication should also help solve the problems which have beset the journal, causing delays in the appearance of several issues, including this one: we owe apologies to our readers and gratitude for maintaining their commitment to this vital forum for Graves studies. Past history and hostages to fortune notwithstanding, our aim is to bring out the journal on time every year. This Gravesiana is a „first‟ in other ways. It features a hitherto unrecorded „letter from the front‟ which Robert Graves sent in 1915 to his old school magazine, The Carthusian. Eric Webb convincingly identifies Graves as the anonymous author of „Is my Team Ploughing…?‟. He suggests that it is really a letter to „Dick‟, the younger schoolmate whom Graves loved, and, moreover, „an apologia pro vita sua on the eve of battle‟. Another discovery is the exact site of the shop that Robert Graves and Nancy Nicholson ran on Boars Hill, five miles from Oxford, in 1919–21. Philip Stewart‟s account of his researches is illustrated by the shop sign „almost certainly‟ painted by Nancy Nicholson, the report in the Daily Mirror, and a view of the spot where the shop stood. Dominic Hibberd‟s article in the „Critical Studies‟ section is ground-breaking in a different sense. It reveals the extent to which Editorial 165 Goodbye to All That re-invented in 1929 the Robert Graves of the wartime letters and poems, and how different his earlier attitudes were both to the war and to poetry about it. The much-quoted episode in Goodbye when Graves tells Sassoon that he will change his style after he has been in the trenches is just one of the numerous points where Dominic Hibberd sets the record straight. The articles by Eric Webb and Dominic Hibberd are among several in this issue that might be considered to answer the plea of a speaker at the 2008 Oxford meeting for Graves criticism that eschews „hagiography‟. Norman Austin dissects with forensic precision Graves‟s modus operandi in The Greek Myths. However, far from merely doing a hatchet job (like an infuriated academic a few years ago in the TLS), Professor Austin demonstrates both the weaknesses and the strengths of the work. And he even concludes that „Graves himself would be astonished to discover how deeply the Goddess theory has infiltrated into the Academy‟. Nonetheless, in American universities John Woodrow Presley finds that there is an alarming lack of interest in Robert Graves‟s work. Among a multiplicity of factors that Professor Presley examines is the low rating accorded to Graves‟s work by those academic equivalents of Standard & Poor‟s, the Norton Anthology and its predecessor, the Untermeyer anthology in its successive editions. There has been, too, the aggressive campaign conducted by Laura Riding and her followers during her lifetime and since. The Graves-Riding collaboration, the subject of two articles in the last Gravesiana,1 is in this issue viewed from the „other side‟ by Mark Jacobs. Any hagiographical risk inherent in her theme is surely avoided in Anne Mounic‟s luminous study of the connections between Robert Graves‟s work and the Bible.

Graves is best known as the author of historical novels. His I, Claudius, produced as a BBC television series in the 1970s, and its sequel Claudius the God and his Wife Messalina made his name a household word. Yet Graves was a twentieth century Renaissance man: his body of work includes poetry – Graves viewed himself as a poet first and foremost – more than a dozen historical novels, autobiography, studies of mythology and ethnography, writing guides, translation, social commentary, literary criticism. Graves’s autobiography Good-bye to All That is one of the most influential memoirs to come out of the First World War. His Greek Myths remains a basic text in comparative literature studies. Generations of aspiring poets have sought guidance in The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth. Poetry, Graves argued in Lecture One of the Oxford Chair of Poetry series delivered in 1964, ‘is a way of life, a vocation or a profession’, even though it is not ‘operationally organized’ as are the professions of medicine, law, architecture, pedagogy.1 This and more: the imperative of questioning ‘every word and sound and implication in a poem either read or written’ stands in direct opposition to ‘present trends in politics, economics and ethics which are wholly inimical to the appearance of new poets, or the honourable survival of those who may have already appeared.’ The true poets are always/already tempered by poetic principle, which is ‘a simple, obstinate belief in miracle: an asseveration of * Robert Graves, Poetic Craft and Principle (London: Cassell, 1967), p.

We hope to spend a few days in Austria with Jenny on the way to Jugland, but she is all snarled up with the Bevan libel case (on November 21st) & doesn't answer letters. She was very nice to Lucia and Juan on the way through. I expect my Goodbye To All That will create a stir again as it did in 1929 when it first came out - Canellun was built on the spoils. The Sunday Express reviewer cabled could he fly out & interview me. I cabled "yes: but you'll have to come out to Deya", & that's the last I've heard. The pups are eating raw meat now & are very large & fat & active; Mother spends most of her time trying to make them make little puddles on the Baleares. Castor is trimming the trees in the garden; the oranges nearly ripe. The stupid lilac thinks it is spring & is flowering like the pear tree.

Envoi. (Collected Poems, 1975) On the headstone that marks his grave at Deyá, Marjorca, there is the simple: ‘Robert Graves Poeta 1895-1985’. And it was this aspect that attracted Charles Brasch, editor, patron and poet, to the works of Graves, calling him ‘among the finest English poets of our time, one of the few who is likely to be remembered as a poet.’ Indeed, not only did Brasch collect his own first editions volumes written by Graves, but he encouraged the University of Otago Library to buy more. Thanks to Brasch, Special Collections at the University of Otago now has an extensive collection of works (poetry, novels, essays, children’s books) by him. Born at Wimbledon in 1895, Graves had an Irish father, a German mother, an English upbringing, and a classical education. Enlisting in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Graves faced the horrors of World War I. He was wounded by shrapnel, left for dead and later able to read his own obituary in The London Times. In 1929, he penned Goodbye To All That, his war-time autobiography which gave him success and fame. And aside from his regular output of poetry books, he wrote historical novels such as I Claudius (1934) and Claudius the God (1934), The White Goddess (1948), the heady study on matriarchal worship and poetry that in the sixties became a source book for readers of the Whole Earth Catalog, and the very successful The Greek Myths (1955).

He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1909, was a Rhodes Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, 1910-1913, and joined the Faculty at Vanderbilt in 1914, where he taught English until 1937. While at Vanderbilt, Ransom was a major figure in both the Fugitive and Agrarian groups. He published in the Fugitive magazine (1922-1925) and contributed the introduction “A Statement of Principles” and the initial essay “Reconstructed but Unregenerate” for I’ll Take My Stand. In 1937 Ransom accepted a position at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio as Carnegie Professor of Poetry. While at Kenyon he founded and edited an important literary quarterly, The Kenyon Review (1939-1959). His works of poetry include Poems About God (1919), Chills and Fever (1924), and Selected Poems (1945, 1963, 1969). Among the many honors and awards he received were the Bollingen Award in 1951 and the National Book Award for poetry in 1963. There are a number of books written about him and his poetry including Thomas Daniel Young’s biography Gentleman in a Dustcoat (1976) He died in 1974 at the age of eighty six. This collection is a record of his correspondence with the poet and novelist Robert Graves.

    131 John Sommerfield and Mass-Observation Nick Hubble Brunel University When the name of John Sommerfield (1908-1991) appears in a work of literary criticism it is usually either in connection with a specific reference to May Day, his experimental proletarian novel of 1936, or as part of a list containing some or all of the following names: Arthur Calder-Marshall, Jack Lindsay, Edgell Rickword, Montagu Slater, Randall Swingler and Amabel Williams-Ellis. As part of this semi-autonomous literary wing of the Communist Party, Sommerfield played his full role in turn on the Left Review collective in the 1930s, in various writers’ groups such as the Ralph Fox Group of the 1930s and the Realist Writers’ Group launched in early 1940, and on the editorial commission of Our Time in the late 1940s, before leaving the Party in 1956. However, significantly for the argument that follows concerning Sommerfield’s capacity to record the intersubjective quality of social existence, he was as much known for his pub going and camaraderie as his politics, with Dylan Thomas once saying “if all the party members were like John Sommerfield, I’d join on the spot” (Croft 66).
