Reared by their Alma Mater in an atmosphere of sincere moral and intellectual ad vancement they have had a powerful influence on the communities that have welcomed them. Founded originally as a Mission by Padres de la Pena and Murguia, on January 12, 1777, the little settlement successfully passed through the ordeals of flood and earthquake only to be ruined by the persecutions of the Mexican government after that country had won its struggle against Spain. Under the new gov ernor of California, Echandia, known as "the scourge of the mis sions," slowly but surely the property of the missions or rather of the Indians, was wrested from them by the unjust intriguing of the government. Father Viader, who succeeded Father Murguia, left in 1833, broken hearted, dying shortly afterwards. He was suc ceeded by Father Diego Garcia, afterwards the first Bishop of Cali fornia. -

He studied and received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, but later decided to become a Jesuit priest and studied at the Jesuit seminary of Villa Devoto. He studied liberal arts in Santiago, Chile, and in 1960 earned a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. Between 1964 and 1965 he was a teacher of literature and psychology at Inmaculada High School in the province of Santa Fe, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the prestigious Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. After his perpetual profession as a Jesuit in 1973, he became master of novices at the Seminary of Villa Barilari in San Miguel. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. In 1980, he returned to San Miguel as a teacher at the Jesuit school, a job rarely taken by a former provincial superior. -

The Expansion of Catholicism: an Exploration of St. Joseph's College

Title: The Expansion of Catholicism: An Exploration of St. Joseph’s College, the First Catholic Boarding School for Boys within the Oregon Territory Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ David R. Brauner St. Joseph’s College was located within St. Paul, Oregon, the first Roman Catholic mission in the Pacific Northwest. The St. Paul mission was finally established in 1839 by Father Francois Blanchet, four years after the French-Canadian settlers in the area, appropriately known as French Prairie, had requested the presence of a Catholic priest. On October 17th, 1843 St. Joseph’s College was officially dedicated becoming the first boarding school for boys within the Oregon Territory. Two priests, Fathers Antoine Langlois and Jean-Baptiste Zacharie Bolduc alternated as headmaster until the school’s closure in June 1849 due to the California Gold Rush. This thesis examines the expansion of the Catholic Church during the development of the Oregon Territory. The daily experiences and activities of the Catholic priests as well as the significance of their institution, St. Joseph’s College, is explored through the use of the historical and archaeological record. ©Copyright by Cayla L. CHAPTER XXIV THE OREGON MISSIONS, I § I THE FLATHEAD DEPUTATIONS TO ST LOUIS The diocese of St Louis from its erection in 1826 until 1843 not only reached as far as the Rocky Mountains but passed in some vague way at least beyond the Continental Divide into what was generally known as "the Oregon Country " 1 This latter area included within its limits what is now Oregon, Washington, Idaho and western Montana Here was a spiritual jurisdiction of truly imperial range, extending as it did from east of the Mississippi, where it embraced the western moiety of the state of Illinois, to the Pacific Northwest2 As early as 1811 or 1812 a group of Canadian trappers and traders, employees or ex-employees of the Hudson's Bay Company, were settled in the lower Columbia basin 3 They were the pioneer Catholics of that region and as early as 1821 a petition for spiritual aid on their behalf was for warded thence to Father Rosati, vicar-general of upper Louisiana4 When the vicar-general was so shorthanded for help that parishes in 1 "Oregon territory is that important part of North America which extends from the 42nd to the 50th [? ] degree of N latitude and from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean It is bounded on the north by the Russian possessions and on the south by California, forming a kind of parallelogram about seven hundred miles in length and five hundred in breadth and containing 375,000 miles " P J De Smet, Oregon Missions and Travels tn the Rocky Mountains in 1845- 1846 (New York, 1847), p 14 2 Apparently Bishop Rosati considered the -

An Account of the Origins of Christianity in the Fraser-Skeena Headwaters and North Pacific Littoral: 1741-1873 by Jason Allen Redden A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirement of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Religion University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2012 by Jason Redden Abstract This dissertation is an ethnohistorical account of the advent of Christianity, how it was taught and practiced, on the upper Fraser-Skeena watershed and adjacent North Pacific littoral between the years 1741 and 1873. The region was a focal point of sustained international colonial and commercial attention, and missionaries of various European Christianities played an important role in the introduction of Christianity in the vast socio-geographical space. However, they were not the only teachers and practitioners. Lay Christianities, that is, Christianity as practiced by the various workers in the maritime and continental fur trades, and later by Russian, Spanish, British, Canadian and American colonists were perspicuous features of the social field. While the presence of lay Christianities is often underdetermined in the North American historical and ethnographic records, I argue it figured significantly into the quality of social relations between newcomers and peoples Indigenous to the region. Indigenous peoples were initially interested in Christian form and content. Later those interests were augmented by Indigenous prophets interested in indigenizing Christianity; a task which entailed ensuring that Christianity originated locally. When the Hudson‘s Bay Company emerged as the chief commercial operator in the region at the close of the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Indigenous Christianity was mobilized as a religion of resistance against the Company‘s incursion into local social spaces and in the ensuing struggle with both the Company and Christian missionaries. -

CHAPTER XXV THE OREGON MISSIONS, II I DE SMET AND OREGON GEOGRAPHY The contributions made by Father De Smet to the geographical nomenclature of the Pacific Norlhwest are an interesting aspect of his career That these contributions, with a few exceptions, did not prove permanent need not detract from the credit he may be given for these well-meant and often clever attempts to label in some dignified way the watercourses and bodies of si ill water which he encountered in his travels, for as to mountains he seems to have made no effort at all to give them names It was his privilege thus to play as it were at the game of topographical designation for at the period of his earliest travels in Oregon no detailed maps of this region were available In fact, for certain features of the country, e g the sources of Clark's Fork of the Columbia, his own maps would seem to furnish the earliest accurate information we possess Moreover, if the lakes and rivers he came to know had names other than their Indian ones, which in some cases was probably the fact, such names were seemingly little known At all events, De Smet freely attached labels of his own invention or choice to numerous bodies of water in the Oregon counlry indepen dently of any designation they might otherwise have had among the few roaming whites of the territory The nomenclature he devised was partly religious, partly personal in character, being borrowed either from the Catholic Church's calendar of saints or from the names of living acquaintances, in particular of relatives and friends in Belgium, especially if these were benefactors of the missions As a matter of fact, De Smet's attempts to give the names of generous friends a place in Oregon geography were often, it would appear, nothing more than naive and innocent propaganda with a view to enlist their interest still further in the material upkeep of the missions.
