Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge Suggested citation: Frew, E. & Mair. J. (2014). Hogmanay Rituals: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations. In Frost, W. & Laing, J. (Eds) Rituals and traditional events in the modern world. Routledge Hogmanay Rituals: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations Elspeth A. Frew La Trobe University Judith Mair Department of Management Monash University ABSTRACT Hogmanay, which is the name given to New Year’s Eve in Scotland, is a long-standing festival with roots going far back into pagan times. However, such festivals are losing their traditions and are becoming almost generic public celebrations devoid of the original rites and rituals that originally made them unique. Using the framework of Falassi’s (1987) festival rites and rituals, this chapter utilises a duoethnographic approach to examine Hogmanay traditions in contemporary Scotland and the extent to which these have been transferred to another country. The chapter reflects on the traditions which have survived and those that have been consigned to history. Hogmanay and Paganism: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations INTRODUCTION New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay as it is known in Scotland) is celebrated in many countries around the world, and often takes the form of a public celebration with fireworks, music and a carnival atmosphere. However, Hogmanay itself is a long-standing festival in Scotland with roots going far back into pagan times. Some of the rites and rituals associated with Hogmanay are centuries old, and the tradition of celebrating New Year Eve (as Hogmanay) on a grander scale than Christmas has been a part of Scottish life for many hundreds of years.

Moriah 11 Grants and Funding 13 Conclusion 15 3 Introduction Mount Moriah is a historic cemetery located in Southwest Philadelphia’s Kingsessing neighborhood. Once a picturesque and spanning rural cemetery, Mount Moriah closed in 2011 and its maintenance has since been neglected. The Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery is a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the cemetery, both as a way to honor those buried there, and because of the opportunities the cemetery offers as a historical site, natural sanctuary, and community green space. The Friends have a clear vision for Mount Moriah, but need resources to achieve these goals. During the last ten weeks, the Mount Moriah Project interns have tackled multiple projects for the cemetery, including generating the first map of all the cemeteries in Philadelphia, assembling data on over 150 burials, gauging community interest in using the cemetery as a green space, researching programming opportunities and developing connections with potential partners, and exploring and evaluated grant opportunities. The following is a summary of the future of Mount Moriah and potential the cemetery can offer as a community space, with support from the City. I. History of Mount Moriah Located in Southwest Philadelphia, Mount Moriah Cemetery is a hidden historic gem clouded by years of neglect.

  • Dinner Is at 10 Pm Thao Thu Nguyen 7:30 Pm
Dinner Is at 10 pm Thao Thu Nguyen 7:30 pm. Time for my mother to start cooking dinner. In a few hours, my father would be home. The garage door rumbles open. The car door slams shut. The younger children run to the door to greet their father after a long day at work. He walks into the house and smells the aroma of food. Walking to the dining room, he sees the table is all set and the food is ready to be eaten. It’s 10:00 pm now. Time for dinner! One by one, everyone sits in their designated spots. Grace is said . and we begin to eat. Meals in my family were far from quiet. It was one of the few times we had to spend together as a whole family. We would talk about how our days had been, tell stories of the past, or explain our . plans for the week. Dinner was our family bonding time. There are eight of us, my father, my mother, and six children; so, there was always at least one person who had something to talk about. It’s a crowded dinner table, we’re sitting next to each other, elbow to elbow, talking and enjoying the time. Suddenly the phone rings, the chattering slowly stops. My father picks it up and leaves the dinner table. As he walks away, we hear a faded, “Dr. Nguyen.” A few minutes later, he reappears in . his signature blue scrubs and we know we won’t be seeing him until the morning of the next day.

  • The Autoethnographic (De)Construction: How German Writers of Turkish Heritage Manipulate the German Language to Reexamine Ideas of National Identity and -Lingualisml
The Autoethnographic (De)Construction: How German writers of Turkish heritage manipulate the German language to reexamine ideas of national identity and -lingualisml Emily Starace A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics {at Swarthmore College} and German Haverford College 11 December 2012 1 I would like to thank Professor Ted Fernald, my Faculty Advisor for his feedback, advice and support. I thank Asst. Professor Imke Brust, my Second Faculty Reader and German consultant, for her guidance and for instigating my passion for German language and culture. I thank my student readers, Zandalee Montero and Hyuneui Cho, whose questions provided perspective. Additional recognition goes to my linguistics major advisor, Professor Shizhe Huang, for encouraging me to pursue linguistics and Professor Ulrich Sch5nherr, my German major advisor, for his direction and open ears. I also extend gratitude to Professor K. David Harrison for providing me with initial sources and Dr. Sabine Berking at IES Abroad, Berlin, whose course on Multiculturalism in Berlin and suggested readings deepened my interest in this topic. All errors are my own. Starace 2 Abstract This paper examines how the innovative, non-standard German language and usage presented by minority German authors with Turkish heritage stand as reactions to constructed ideals and myths that pervade modem Germany society. Using the medium of 'autoethnographic texts,' these authors work to dissolve the myths of nationhood, monolingualism and a 'mother tongue' in order to surmount the limitations they impose. Examining Feridun Zaimoglu's novel Kanak Sprak: 24 Misst6ne Vom Rande Der Gesellschaft (1995) and Emine Sevgi Ozdamar's work Mutterzunge: Erzahlungen (1990), this thesis challenges the precondition of a solely monolingual identity and analyzes these works and the unique languages they employ as commentaries on both the heritage Turkish and the host German culture.

Black at the Meeting o/Ministers 01 Finance or EcollOray at the Fourth Extraordinary Meeting 01 the Inter-American Economic and Social Council at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 24, 1954. There appears to be a real prospect, I am happy to say, that the Bank now may be jointed by an associated institution in the field of economic development. I am referring, of course, to the proposed International Finance Corporation. This idea has been vigoro.usl y espoused by the Latin American countries ever since it was first expressed three years ago. And their repeated and continuous support for the idea, at the Annual Meetings of the Bank and at many other international meetings, has been an impressive indication of the hopes with which this project is regarded in the Hemisphere. The recent decision by the Administration in Washington, to advocate in the Congress that the United States participate in the Coiporation, was a most welcome one to me, both officially and personally. I hope, and have every confidence, that other capital exporting nations also will soon declare their intention to support the Corporation. We in the Bank expect to move promptly in carrying the project forward, and to be able to present specific and detailed proposals to our member governments at an early date. Let me repeat, as I have said many times, that I personally am convinced that the Corporation will provide a valuable stimulus to international investment in the underdeveloped counuies.

  • What Is Baby New Year? Baby New Year Is a Popular PersoniCation of the Start of the New Year, Symbolizing the "Rebirth" of the Past Year Into the Next
What is Baby New Year? Baby New Year is a popular personication of the start of the new year, symbolizing the "rebirth" of the past year into the next. Usuay a male infant wearing nothing else than a diaper, a top hat and a sash (which sometimes shows the year he is representing), Baby New Year is often paired with another mythical gure caed "Father Time" — an elderly man carrying a scythe and hourglass who's depicted as the personication of passing time. As t he story goes, Baby New Year wi age and eventuay grow into Father Time by the end of the year in December, at which time he wi then turn over his timekeeping duties — and impart his aged wisdom — to the next Baby New Year born on January 1. How did Baby New Year start? According to History.com , the use of a baby as a representation of the new year actuay has its roots as far back as 600 B.C. in ancient Greece. In celebrating the annual rebirth of Dionysus — the god of wine and fertility — with each new year, the Greeks had a tradition of parading around an infant in a basket throughout town to represent the god's birth. Early Christians then also began using the image of a baby to celebrate the new year, with the infant often depicting the religious gure of Baby Jesus. Baby New Year then became secularized by newspaper cartoonists in the 19th century, most notably with a series of covers in the The Saturday Evening Post b y Joseph Christian Leyendecker from 1907 to 1943.
