Sophomore The Conflict between Materialism and Idealism In The Sea Wolf by Jack London, Humphrey Van Weyden is an American upper class gentleman on a ferry-steamer, but a collision almost drowns him in the sea. He is rescued by Wolf Larsen, the captain of a seal-hunting schooner named the Ghost . Forced to serve Wolf, Humphrey witnesses how Wolf treats his crew carelessly, for the Captain believes in Materialism, where life is only matter and has no value to others. Humphrey, on the other hand, argues for Idealism, the belief in spiritual values that transcend life such as love and honor. Although Wolf initially dominates the weak Humphrey, London showed his bias toward Idealism by portraying Humphrey as the victorious survivor. The negative aspects of Materialism are demonstrated through the sailors’ mutiny.

    FEATURES THE YOUNG MEN AND THE SEA: Sea/Ocean as a Space of Maturation? he sea (or ocean) in American literature and culture is marked Justyna Fruzińska University of Łódź Tby a distinctive ambiguity. On the one hand, and quite Poland expectedly, the sea voyage can be a maturation experience: such is the case of Humphrey Van Weyden, the protagonist of Jack London’s The Sea-Wolf. However, the sea is also a space of the opposite experience: one that accommodates remark- ably immature characters. Be it in the person of Captain Delano in Melville’s ‘Benito Cereno’ or the eponymous Billy Budd, it is a site welcoming naïve and escapist heroes who do not want to or cannot adapt to the demands of land society. London’s Humphrey Van Weyden is an effeminate scholar who, because of a shipwreck, finds himself on board the ship Ghost, headed by the ruthless captain Wolf Larsen. During the first half of the book, Van Weyden is confronted with a world radically different from the one he was used to: one in which no pity (or self-pity) is shown, in which hard physical work applies equally to everyone, and a value is given to ‘standing on one’s own legs’ (London, 2000: 127). Thus, in order to survive, Humphrey must change physically, which he does, acquiring more stamina and losing his scholarly sensitivity. However, the process of physical adapta- tion is only part of the change that takes place in the protagonist. Besides working as a cook’s help and a cabin boy, Humphrey takes part in long theoretical discussions with Wolf Larsen.

Joe Dirt - Monday, October 13, 2014 http://www.curmudgeon-alley.com/the-sea-wolf-by-jack-london/ London is probably best known for his book The Call of the Wild and possibly White Fang. London had a short but very prolific career. He was first published at 21 and had drunk himself to death by the time he was 40. The actual cause of his death was a morphine overdose. It remains unknown whether it was accidental or a suicide. He detailed his alcoholism in John Barleycorn or Alcoholic Memoirs. In some ways he had great insight into his alcoholism and at the same time practice great denial. He also wrote a very good book on the slums of London, The People of the Abyss. I had not heard of The Sea Wolf which only points out my literary ignorance. After reading the book I wondered if they had ever made a movie of it. They have a few times. There is the 1941 version starring Edward G. Robinson. There is a 1993 made for TV movie starring Charles Bronson and Christopher Reeves. There is also a TV mini-series from 2009. As I was researching the movies I came across a review of the book that stated more than a few critics have called it possibly The Great American Novel. I am not sure I would go quite that far, but I would definitely put it high company.

Voici, brièvement, leur histoire. On a spring day in 1888 the bustling port of Victoria had its cultural mix enhanced with the arrival of three boatloads of Cape Bretoners. At 8:00 am on Tuesday, 24 April the 113-ton schooner Annie C. Moore under Captain Charles Hackett arrived, having departed North Sydney 158 days earlier. Thirteen hours later the Triumph, a 97- ton schooner under Dan MacLean appeared, after a 128 day passage from Halifax.1 She was followed within minutes by the Maggie Mac, a 196-ton three masted schooner with Captain John Dodd at the helm, having departed Halifax on 9 November.2 Hackett was from North Sydney; Dodd was a native of Sydney; MacLean was from East Bay. The majority of the crews were also Cape Bretoners, most of them on the West coast for the first time; only Dodd and MacLean had previously sailed out of Victoria.3 A fourth schooner with a Cape Bretoner at the helm also sailed into James Bay that evening.
