ABSTRACT Introduction: Currently, researchers are aiming to explore herbal plants to replace synthetic drugs because herbal plants contain high active compounds and fewer side effects. Our study was done to determine the antibacterial activity of Eurycoma longifolia Jack (E. longifolia) root using ethanol based extract. Methods: Five types of pathogenic bacterial strains were used; Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus ce- reus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Disc diffusion assay and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) tests were used to determine the inhibition zone and turbidity of suspension which reflects the antibacterial activity of the extract.Results: The ethanolic extract of E. longifolia Jack root extract showed positive results against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus and B. cereus) and Gram- negative (S. typhi). B.cereus and S.typhi showed inhibition zone values of 11.76mm and 14.33mm at the extract concentration of 150mg/ml that were higher than the positive control values (9.00, 12.67mm) respectively. However, E. coli and P. aeruginosa did not show any inhibition by the ethanol-based extract. Conclusion: From the results we can conclude that E.Longifolia root extract possesses antibacterial activity that can be further explored to produce new medicinal products. Osteoporosis causes bone loss, reduces mineralised density, and inevitably leads to bone fracture. Hormonal deficiencies due to aging or drug induction are also frequently attributed to osteoporosis. Nevertheless, the phytochemical content of natural plants has been proven to significantly reduce osteoporotic conditions. A systematic review was conducted by this study to identify research specifically on the effects of Malaysian herbs such as Piper sarmentosum, Eurycoma longifolia and Labisia pumila on osteoporotic bone changes. This review consisted of a comprehensive search of five databases for the effects of specific herbs on osteoporotic bone change. Forest Biotechnology Division, Forest Research Institute Malaysia, 52109 Kepong, Selangor, Malaysia ABSTRACT Labisia pumila is well known as queen of herb in Malaysia due to its phytoestrogenic activity that beneficial to women health. Since the raw material supply is limited, this study is aim to identify feasible propagation methods for future planting stock production of this herb. Three propagation techniques were investigated in this study namely seeds, leaf cuttings and tissue culture. Mother plants of Labisia pumila var. pumila taken from germplasm located in Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) were used in study. For seeds propagation, a total of 40 seeds were germinated in 100% or river sands and seedlings formed were then transferred to polybags. The growth of the seedlings was recorded for the period of 25 weeks. While for leaf cuttings, matured leaves were used and treated with Seradix 1 (0.1% IBA) before inserted into the rooting medium of the propagation bed. The observation on rooted cuttings was made during 3 to 12 weeks of cuttings. After 12 weeks, the rooted cuttings were transferred into growing medium consisting of top soil: leaf compost: sand (2:3:1) and observed for 25 weeks. The constituents of this plant have been reported to possess anti cancer, antioxidant, anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory properties. The growth and production of L. pumila is greatly influenced by the environmental condition such as shade, humidity and growing media. In this study, the survivality of L. pumila var. alata (KFeFRIM01) plantlets derived from tissue culture technique using temporary immersion system were analyzed during pre and post acclimatization process. The plantlets were pre acclimatize in different potting media namely 100% sand and 100% jiffy and grown in plastic growth chamber with different percentage of shade (0%, 50% and 70%). After a month, the plants were transferred to the nursery for post acclimatization. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the survivality of plants placed under different percentage of shade (70% and 50%), suitable growing media and watering requirement per day. The growth of the plants such as plant height, number of leaves, leaf length and leaf width were recorded during the acclimatization process.

Two vegetative propagation techniques were investigated in this study, namely tissue culture and leaf cuttings. In tissue culture method, a combination of MS media with 0.5 mg L-1 NAA gave fast response in shoot development of L. pumila var. alata compared to other treatment media. The in vitro leaves explant were able to produce 4.33 ± 0.39 shoots per explants after being cultured for 16 weeks. The established plantlets from tissue culture were acclimatised in four different potting media, namely sand (100%), cocopeat (100%), jiffy (100%) and sand:cocopeat 50:50). Jiffy (100%) was found to be the best potting media during the acclimatisation of the plantlets compared to other treatment. While for leaf cuttings, the shoot development on rooted cuttings were observed only after 19 to 30 weeks of cutting period.
