The Early Effects of Gunpowder on Fortress Design: A Lasting Impact MATTHEW BAILEY COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS The introduction of gunpowder did not immediately transform the battlefields of Europe. Designers of fortifications only had to respond to the destructive threats of siege warfare, and witnessing the technical failures of early gunpowder weaponry would hardly have convinced a European magnate to bolster his defenses. This essay follows the advancement of gunpowder tactics in late medieval and early Renaissance Europe. In particular, it focuses on Edward III’s employment of primitive ordnance during the Hundred Years’ War, the role of artillery in the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, and the organizational challenges of effectively implementing gunpowder as late as the end of the fifteenth century. This essay also seeks to illustrate the nature of the development of fortification in response to the emerging threat of gunpowder siege weaponry, including the architectural theories of the early Renaissance Italians, Henry VIII’s English artillery forts of the mid-sixteenth century, and the evolution of the angle bastion. The article concludes with a short discussion of the longevity and lasting relevance of the fortification technologies developed during the late medieval and early Renaissance eras. The castle was an inseparable component of medieval warfare. Since Duke William of Normandy’s 1066 conquest of Anglo-Saxon England, the construction of castles had become the earmark of medieval territorial expansion. These fortifications were not simply stone squares with round towers adorning the corners. Edward I’s massive castle building program in Wales, for example, resulted in fortifications so visually disparate that one might assume they were from different time periods.1 Medieval engineers had built upon castle technology for centuries by 1500, and the introduction of gunpowder weaponry to the battlefields of Europe foreshadowed a revision of the basics of fortress design. -

EUROPEAN HERITAGE HEADS Newsletter FORUM # 05 / March 2013 Dear colleagues I am looking forward to greeting you in Oslo in May! In this newsletter you will find infor- mation on the programme for the EHHF meeting, from May 22 (evening) to May 24th and information on how to register. We have included news on developments in the European Cultural Heritage sector pertaining to our meeting in May. If you wish to bring your partner or spouse I am happy to welcome them to all meals and excursions. Please notify us of this when you register and please register as soon as possible. The programme for this year’s meeting is focused on two topics. The first, which we will discuss among ourselves, is the organization of the EHHF and the creation of an EHHF Secretariat. The second topic is the cooperation with the NGO sector to improve dialogue and cooperation with civil society to build a more cooperative cultural heritage management policy. A number of guests are invited to discuss this with us. We are still working to com- plete the details. I am also pleased to have accommodated interesting technical excursions. On the evening of the 22nd we shall meet for a welcome reception at the new Opera building, which was inaugurated in 2008 and listed in 2012. In the afternoon of the 23rd we will take the boat to Bygdøy. Here we will have lunch and afterwards visit the Stave Church, the excavated Viking ships and historic buildings from the middle ages up to the 19th century. The dinner will be in the historic Akershus Castle and hosted by the Minister of Environ- ment. -
Ruter and the Municipality of Bærum Sign Micromobility Contract with TIER
PRESS RELEASE 23 APRIL 2020 Ruter and the Municipality of Bærum sign micromobility contract with TIER TIER has been confirmed as the new supplier of micromobility solutions for the Municipality of Bærum. The municipality’s bike hire scheme will now be expanding to include electric scooters and electric bicycles. Ruter, the Public Transport Authority of Oslo and the former Akershus region, has entered into a public-public collaboration with the Municipality of Bærum. The purpose of the collaboration is to establish a wide range of mobility services for Bærum. The procurement process has now been concluded, with TIER GmbH being selected as the municipality’s supplier of micromobility solutions. – This will be the first time Ruter integrates micromobility solutions into our existing public transport system. Our collaboration with the municipality is working very well, and we believe this is going to be an important step towards the future of mobility services," says Endre Angelvik, director of mobility services at Ruter. The partnership’s plan is to integrate shared e-bikes and e-scooters into the existing public transport system – first in Lysaker, Sandvika and Fornebu in 2020, then in other parts of the municipality during springtime next year. Ruter and the municipality of Bærum intend for the new micromobility scheme to become a valuable and safe addition to the environments where they are introduced. To this end, the partnership will aim to keep in close touch with the municipality’s general population, for purposes of receiving feedback and making adjustments. Formally, the purpose of the contract is to develop a scheme that • complements existing public transport services by allowing travellers seamless movement from transport hubs all the way to their final destination • provides the aforementioned scheme to the city's inhabitants, visitors, businesses and municipal employees – Bærum is on the way towards becoming a climate-smart municipality. -

Enjoy your trip! 27 6 26 1 THE VISITOR CENTRE The Artillery Building, also called the Long Red House, has the date 1774 carved into a stone near the south corner of the foundation wall. Inside the building 5 you can still see the supporting pillars of the curtain wall. The Directorate of Cultural Heritage had its offices here until 1991. Today the building houses the 2 Visitor Centre at Akershus fortress. 30 29 2 THE CARP POND 1 The Carp Pond is part of a big pond that was divided into two when the foun- 31 dations of the northern curtain wall were laid in 1592. The other part served as 4 a moat outside the northern curtain wall. The stream originally came from the 3 area around Christiania Square and ran through this pond and down to Munk’s Pond. The Carp Pond was filled in after the mid-19th century, but recreated in the 1960s. In Britain, as in their other provinces, the Romans constructed a comprehensive network of paved trunk roads (i.e. surfaced highways) during their nearly four centuries of occupation (43 - 410 AD). This article focuses on the ca. 2,000 mi (3,200 km) of Roman roads in Britain shown on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain.[1] This contains the most accurate and up-to-date layout of certain and probable routes that is readily available to the general public. The pre-Roman Britons used mostly unpaved trackways for their communications, including very ancient ones running along elevated ridges of hills, such as the South Downs Way, now a public long-distance footpath. -

Trajče NACEV Fortification of the Medieval Fort Isar – Shtip UDK 94:623.1(497.731)”653” University “Goce Delcev” Stip [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract: The medieval fort Isar, which was built on top of the ruins of the antique town of Astibo, is located on the hill with a North-South orientation in the central city core. The fortification had its largest increase during the 14th century and from this period we have the best preserved architectonic remains of the fortification. The entire fort is surrounded by fortification walls, with the main entrance in their eastern portion. The suburbs are located on the eastern and southern slopes of the Isar hill. At the highest part (the acropolis) there was another, smaller fortification, probably a feudal residence with a remarkable main tower (Donjon). The article reviews the fortification in the context of the results from the 2001 – 2002 and 2008 – 2010 excavation campaigns. During the first campaign, one of the most significant discoveries was the second tower, a counterpart to the main Donjon tower, and the entrance to the main part of the acropolis positioned between them. With the second 2008 – 2010 campaign, the entire eastern fortification wall of the Isar fort was uncovered. Key words: fortification, fort, curtain wall, tower.
