September 2017 to December 2017 Navaratri 2017 ... 4 Sri Chakra • [email protected] Sri Chakra ● December 2017 Sept Dwajarohanam 13 Dwajarohanam, the flag hoisting ceremony, fell on a wednesday this year. Around 125 people were able to attend and witness the beautiful ceremony. After the preliminary pujas, Aiya drew the flag using his unique mixture of several dravyams. The Dwajam was hoisted and the Dwaja Sthambam was decorated with the Bhairava Trishula, Rudrakshas malas, flower garlands, charams, ceiling kunjalams and flowers. Ganapathi Thalam was recited every day during Dwaja Puja until the Dwajam was brought down again. Sept Oct Sharada Navaratri 20 - 02 This year’s Sharada Navaratri was conducted on an extremely grand scale. The theme for this year’s Navaratri festival was Sahasra Chandi. A Sahasra Chandi Maha Yajnam was performed over the course of the festival, which lasted one extra day due to longer thithi timings leading up to the Dasami day. Chandi homam was performed over 100 times and Devi Mahatmyam was recited over 1000 times by approximately 90 trained ritwiks. The Utsava murthis were taken out on procession for each of the goddesses’ days; Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi, respectively. This aligned auspiciously with the main deity of this year, Chandi Devi, as the 3 presiding deities of her Navakshari mantra are Shri Mahakali, Shri Mahalakshmi and Shri Mahasaraswathi. On Friday, the 10th day of Navarathri, an auspicious Maha Navami Chandi homam was held in the morning and Vidyarambham happened in the evening. The following day, Vijayadasami, concluded the Sahasra Chandi Maha Yajnam with a final Chandi homam and Maha Purnahuti, followed by Nava Chandi Kalasodvasanam and the chariot procession. The chariot went around in procession at midday and brought a close to the day’s events. The magnificent festival came to an end with Theertham, Dwajavarohanam and Kulirthi. Sept Oct Kedara Gauri 29 - 19 The conclusion of Navarathri led to the beginning of the 21-day Kedara Gauri vratam. Kedara Gauri Puja was performed every evening of the 21-day festival to celebrate the unity of Devi and Shiva as Ardhanareeshwara. On the final day, about 150 people were present to witness Sri Ardhanareeshwara receive maha abhishekam and alankaram. 21 sumangalis received prasadam of sarees, combs, bangles, mirrors and sharadu threads to be tied around their hands as the festival came to an end. After returning from Badrinath, Adiyen also visited Tirumala-Tirupati and participated in Vimsathi darshanam a scheme which allows a family of 6 members to have Suprabatham, Nijapada and SahasraDeepalankara seva for any 2 consecutive days in a year . It was only due to the abundant grace of Thiruvengadamudaiyan adiyen was able to vist all the Divya desams without any difficulty. Before proceeding further, Adiyen would like to thank all the internet bhagavathas especially Sri Rangasri group members and M.S.Ramesh for providing abundant information about these divya desams. I have uploaded a Map of the hills again downloaded from UP Tourism site for ready reference . As Adiyen had not planned the trip in advance, it was not possible to join “package tour” organised by number of travel agencies and could not do as it was Off season. Adiyen wishes to share my experience with all of you and request the bhagavathas to correct the shortcomings. Adiyen was blessed to take my father aged about 70 years a heart patient , to this divya desam and it would not be an exaggeration to say that only because of my acharyar’s and elders’ blessings , the trip was very comfortable.

Deva means God and Alaya is House. Several smaller Temples or Sannidhanams are structured within the main Temple. A traditional Hindu Temple is built based on the Agamas, which are the Holy Scriptures on architecture. Agamas also provide guidelines for the conduct of worship (prayer). Our Temple was designed by Indian Temple Architects (Sthapati) according to ancient Indian Temple building codes and was inaugurated (Kumbabhishekam) in 1998. Now you are standing close to a tall brass cased wooden pillar. This is called the Dhwajasthambham or the flag staff of our Temple. Most Hindu Temples have a Dhwajasthambham in front. Temple worship starts from this point. You may see worshippers touching this pillar. Some may go around this one to three times. Some men place their body flat on the ground in front of this pillar.

He is affiliated with Lord Shiva. His abode is the cremation grounds and has four arms and three eyes, sitting on five corpse. He holds trident, drum, sword and hammer. He rubs ashes from the cremation ground. He is surrounded by vultures and jackals. His consort is Kali. Both together personify time and destructive powers. The paper deals with Sacred Mahakala and it mentions legends, tales, myths in Hindus and Buddhist texts. It includes various types, forms and iconographic features of Mahakalas. This research concludes that sacred Mahakala is of great significance to both the Buddhist and the Hindus alike. Key-words: Sacred Mahakala, Hindu texts, Buddhist texts. Mahakala Newari Pauwa Etymology of the name Mahakala The word Mahakala is a Sanskrit word . Maha means ‘Great’ and Kala refers to ‘ Time or Death’ . Mahakala means “ Beyond time or Death”(Mukherjee, (1988). NY). The Tibetan Buddhism calls ‘Mahakala’ NagpoChenpo’ meaning the ‘ Great Black One’ and also ‘Ganpo’ which means ‘The Protector’. The Iconographic features of Mahakala in Hindu text In the ShaktisamgamaTantra. The male spouse of Mahakali is the outwardly frightening Mahakala (Great Time), whose meditatative image (dhyana), mantra, yantra and meditation . In the Shaktisamgamatantra, the mantra of Mahakala is ‘Hum Hum Mahakalaprasidepraside Hrim Hrim Svaha.’ The meaning of the mantra is that Kalika, is the Virat, the bija of the mantra is Hum, the shakti is Hrim and the linchpin is Svaha.
