Conversations CHALLENGING FEBRUARY 2017 CONVERSATIONS n homes and communities across America, a conversation is taking place between parents of color and their children – especially sons – about how to behave if they are ever stopped by the police. “The Talk,” as it is called, has become increasingly necessary in the wake of recent tragic events between people of color and law enforcement – such as the fatal shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Tamir I Rice in Cleveland, Ohio, and the death of Eric Garner on Staten Island, New York. This critical conversation – and a larger, equally timely one about the ever-widening gap between majority-minority populations in the United States—are the focus of The Talk—Race in America. Directed by Sam Pollard (American Masters: August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand), the documentary presents six personal stories to illustrate the issue from multiple perspectives: the parent, the child, the police, and the community. A complementary multiplatform media initiative will feature extensive online, social media, and community engagement components. Among those profiled are Dr. Christi Griffin, founder of The Ethics Project, who created “Parent2Parent,” a series of conversations with black parents speaking with white parents about “the Talk”; Samaria Rice (top left), mother of Tamir Rice (bottom left), a 12-year-old boy killed by the Cleveland police while playing with a toy gun in a local park; Reverend Catherine Brown, who was assaulted by Chicago Police in front of her children in her own car; Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President and retired New York City police officer; and members of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, who explain the protocols for using lethal force and describe the danger from a police officer’s point of view. Kenya Barris, creator and executive producer of the ABC series black*ish; musician/activist Nas; actor/director Rosie Perez; director/writer/producer John Singleton; and New York Times Op Ed Columnist Charles Blow also share their personal stories. Looking at animals: when visual nature questions visual culture 1 A topos of Western philosophy indexes animals’ irreducible alienation from the human condition on their lack of speech. In ancient times, their inarticulate cries provided the necessary analogy to designate non-Greeks as other, the adjective “Barbarian” assimilating foreign languages to incomprehensible birdcalls.1 To this day, the exclusion of animals from the sphere of logos remains one of the crucial questions addressed by philosophy and linguistics.2 In the work of some contemporary critics, however, the tenets of this relation to the animal “other” seem to have undergone a change in focus. With renewed insistence that difference is inextricably bound up in a sense of proximity, such writings have described animals not simply as “other,” but as our speechless others. This approach seems to find particularly fruitful ground where theory proposes to explore ways of seeing as constitutive of the discursive structures that we inhabit.
