OUTSTANDING WOMEN AECOM is delighted to partner with the Women Builders Council on its mission to recognize and advance women in the building and engineering industry. We at AECOM are committed to increasing diversity within our global organization. We do so daily, attracting and supporting women in the advancement of their careers, while striving to find the work-life balance that is essential to achieving success and a sense of fulfillment. Through our leadership programs, opportunities for continued education and ability to offer challenging and rewarding assignments around the globe, we are able to attract, retain and elevate women in all ranks of the organization. I am passionate about the topic of women’s leadership and their career development and growth. On a personal level, I continue to observe talented, dedicated women who are navigating their careers with great vigor and focus. On a professional level, I recognize that advocacy of women in the workplace is a shared responsibility amongst our corporations, our learning centers and our culture. “There are ‘glass ceilings’… But there are also ‘sticky floors.’ ” Yes, there are ‘glass ceilings’ that women must shatter as they advance within their respective firms and organizations. But there are also ‘sticky floors.’ By that, I mean that we all have a responsibility to recognize and nurture the talent of the next generation of leaders throughout our respective organizations. We must ensure that women are exposed to all dimensions of the business and we must provide an environment in which they can further refine their craft. Most importantly, early on, we have to help pull them off of IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY We all have a “ responsibility to recognize “ and nurture the talent of the next generation of leaders. — Jane Chmielinski Executive Vice President, Chief Corporate Officer, AECOM Technology Corporation that sticky floor so that they can make the journey to break through whatever ceiling or challenge they see ahead of them. THE WOMEN HERE As you read many of the biographies of the women included in this very first issue of Outstanding Women in the Building Industry, you will see a snapshot of both the accomplishments and the challenges that women confront as they pursue their careers and their personal lives. There is more to recognizing women than the recognition itself. We are establishing role models for this generation of women and for the generations after them. Programs such as WBC support that philosophy and allow for the advancement of a more diverse and rich work experience. Each of the women recognized in this book has an added responsibility: to find other luminaries. Tonight, we celebrate these outstanding women – but the work continues tomorrow. We must be vigilant in identifying and supporting women across all networks. After looking at the roster of honorees, there is no doubt that the challenge has been heard – and that it will be answered. On behalf of AECOM, which has demonstrated – and continues to demonstrate – its support of women in our own corporate family, I congratulate the recipients of WBC’s Outstanding Women award. Each of you serves as a model for leadership, both within your own family as well as within the building industry. THE NEXT GENERATION Wo m e n Bu i l d e r s Co u n c i l , I n c .
