This thesis examines Chinese wind divination in the period of Song Renzong Reign (1022-1063) from two different paths: one is by interpreting the Wind Orientation Divination method based on my text analysis of Wujing Zongyao武经总要; the other path is by elaborating Wind Sensing Divination method in Qiusheng Fu with its links to Meihua Yishu梅花易数 and I Ching. Through these two paths, I try to build an understanding of Chinese wind divination in Song Renzong Reign. Introduction Humans has a necessity of knowing natural phenomena. The time period over which humans have tried to know natural phenomena is probably much longer than the time period when hu- mans begun to have knowledge about other phenomena. Heaven, earth, wind, and even thunder and lightning, all of the elements were in existence before humanity, and continue to play a role in the world of humans today. The recognition and knowledge of natural phenomena by humans is thus hardly achieved by single individual, but through accumulated knowledge consistent with the inheritance from the past. By knowing natural phenomena, simultaneously, humans make efforts to changing and predicting the natural environment within where they live. The effects, the changes on nature by the human forces are also the result of actions accumulated from gener- ation to generation. In brief, there are two general relations that humans can have with nature, one is to know nature, and the other is to change and to transform it. Knowing nature is I argue also related to the process whereby of about knowing humanity itself. However, in the past several centuries, the development of science in the modern world has sparked a huge technological development and thus increasing human’s ability in changing and transforming nature. These changes have also influenced the recognition of nature as an integral part of culture. The increasing power of humans with technologies rendered a change in the rela- tionships between human and nature. Nature is in some extent seen as human’s servant or slave, used by humans for resources and exploitation to make nature serve human society. In essence, the use of nature and natural resources is deriving from ancient time, but with technology’s help, the process of exploitation now has become faster and extraction greater. Technologies also change the way that we humans think. As nature becomes a slave of humanity, the same way, the human mind is enslaved into technology and mechanisms or what I call the mechanistic view. If we compare the past to the modern world, there is a quite difference in the relation between human and nature. Nature or natural phenomena

PSYCHOMETRY is the faculty of gaining impressions from a physical object and its history. SCIOMANCY is divination using a spirit guide, a method generally employed by channelers. SCRYING is a general term for divination using a crystal, mirrors, bowls of water, ink, or flames to induce visions. TASSEOGRAPHY is the reading of tea leaves that remain in a tea cup once the beverage has been drunk. AEROMANCY divination from the air and sky, particularly concentrating on cloud shapes, comets, and other phenomena not normally visible in the heavens. ALECTRYOMANCY is divination whereby a bird is allowed to pick corn grains from a circle of letters. A variation is to recite letters of the alphabet noting those at which a cock crows. ALEUROMANCY is divination using "fortune cookies"; answers to questions are rolled into balls of dough and once baked are chosen at random.

In my point of view, this aspect is actually the focal point of his life and is strongly reflected in most of his writings; from his memory of mentors and friends, his remembrance on the places visited, his writing on history, to his collections of ancient bronzes and stone tablets, his emotion is always the crucial part of his reflection and value judgment. This emotional state evolved continuously at his different period of life and different stages of writings. It was undoubtedly affected by his maturity in age and life experience but his physical, psychological and temperament conditions are the more prominent affecting factors. As a result, we can find a gap between the "Ouyang Xiu" shown in the biography and Chinese literary history compared with the "Ouyang Xiu" enshrined in his literary work. This might due to the objectivity underlined in biography and the emotional subjectivity underlined in literary works. More interestingly, the former is about reality of life and the latter is about "world" of literary works, which is not an objective reality, but was actually organized and experienced by an individual subject.

Ryan Librarian of the Institute The Warburg Institute is part of the School of Advanced Study in the University of London, but its origins are in pre-World War II Hamburg. Its founder, Aby Warburg (1866-1929),1 was a wealthy historian of Renaissance art and civilization who developed a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to cultural history which included the history of science and religion, psychology, magic and astrology. He was the guiding spirit of a circle of distinguished scholars for whom his library and photographic collection provided a custom- built research center. In 1895 Warburg visited America and studied in particular Pueblo culture, which he regarded as still retaining a consciousness in which magic was a natural element. In his historical study of astrology he was influenced by Franz Boll (part of whose book collection is now in the Warburg library). In 1912 he delivered a now famous lecture on the symbolism of astrological imagery of the frescoes in the Palazzo Schifanoja in Ferrara; he wrote a particularly interesting article on Luther's horoscope; and he began the study of the grimoire called Picatrix, the various versions of which the Warburg Institute is gradually publishing.

Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University, 2 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Title: 論邵雍之觀物法 Abstract: Shao Yong’s “Inner Chapters on Observing Things” develops a method for understanding the unity of heaven and man, tracing the decline of civilization from antiquity, and determining how the present can return to the ideal socio-political order of antiquity. Shao’s method is based on dividing any topic into fours aspects (for example, four Classics, four seasons, four kinds of rulers, etc.) and generating the systematic relations between these four member sets. Although Shao’s method was unusual at the time, the questions he was addressing were shared with mid-eleventh statecraft thinkers. 摘要:邵雍在《觀物內篇》中發展出了一種獨特的方法,用來理解天人合一、追溯三代以 後之衰、並確定如何才能復原三代理想的社會政治秩序。邵雍的方法立足於將任意一個主 題劃分為四個種類(例如,四種經典,四種季節,四種統治者,等等),並賦予這四個種 類之間以系統性的聯繫。雖然邵雍的方法在當時並非尋常,可是他所試圖解決的問題卻是 其他十一世紀中葉的政治制度思想家所共同思考的。 Shao’s claim to philosophical importance is based on a single book, the Huangji jingshi shu 皇極 經世書 (Supreme Principles for Governing the World) and the various charts and diagrams associated with it, and to much lesser extent his collection of poems, the Jirang ji 擊壤集.
