Meeting the food, nutrition, health and environmental security in global will be the serious challenges. Indian agriculture has achieved self sufficiency in food, attaining record production of food grains, milk, fruits and vegetables during the past few years, but unfortunately, the incidences of hunger and poverty in country are stubbornly high, one-fifth of our population about 2030 million is hungry and under nourished, accounting for about one- fourth of the world's food insecure people. The situation is further aggravated with the past changing climate, the shrinking land and water resources and the rising food price particularly in the cities. The fast changing dietary habits and increasing income in the urban and peri-urban areas will exert still greater demand for fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, milk, meat and eggs. In this context, optimum utilization of resources requires land use planning with which views agriculture as an integral component of the natural resources and balances the competitive and synergistic interactions among its users. In order to critically examine the current status of agriculture towards meeting the food demand, utilizing wastes and servicing the environment. For sustainability in agriculture and food security, one has to change the mind set and conceive a farming system approach, which can enhance rhizosphere and biosphere simultaneously and assure sustainable production in coming years. In order to resolve these the Samagra Vikas Welfare Society (SVWS) organizing an International Seminar on Agriculture and Food for Inclusive Growth and Development during 14-15 January, 2017. Lucknow »was founded on the mound, strategically located on the southern banks of the river Gomati. River frontages are not mere localizable attractions for city facades but they also have a secret hand in determining the morphological aspects of townships particularly in their early stages of development. It is situated at 26*^52' N Latitude and 80^ 56'E longitude. Presently, Lucknow dominates as the capital of Uttar Pradesh. This city, of about over one and half million people ranks among the ten big metropolis of India. Lie of the Land : Considering the notoriety of the Gomati for frequent rising in spates, the high mound-popularly known as the Lakshman Tila- was an ideal location for a human settlement, insuring safety and security against flood hazards. INTRODUCTION 1 ______________________________________________________________________________________ 1.1 Introduction Urbanisation and economic development have caused rapid city expansion in size and structure. The urban structure is becoming increasingly complex, heterogeneous and irregular in shape. The development spreads over to the peri-urban areas resulting in degradation of natural and rural land over time. This process will continue further, if remain unchecked through proper planning measures. This will adversely impact the quality of life of both urban and peri-urban dwellers. Although the urban sprawl in a developing city cannot be stopped, however; a remedy to this issue can be devised through strict zoning regulations based on land suitability and carrying capacity, which allows land use to be channelled towards more sustainable uses. In this context, research study entitled Dynamics of Peri-Urban Areas: Prospects and Challenges of Sustainable Development - A case study of Peri-Urban area of Lucknow is undertaken and peri-urban areas are illustrated at Map 1. Lucknow has been divided into two parts based on growing urbanisation i.e. old Lucknow and New Lucknow. The peri-urban area denote to a grey area which is neither entirely urban nor purely rural in the traditional sense. Sometimes, Peri-urban area is Photo 1: A bird’s eye view of Central area of Lucknow described as physically defined transitional area bordering a city, characterised with mix of both rural and urban form and functions. Peri-urban areas are ‘those areas surrounding the cities within a daily commuting reach of the city core. In some parts of Asia, these regions can stretch for up to thirty kilometres away from city core’.

IJMRT • Volume 12 • Number 2 • July-December 2018: 145-153 CULINARY TOURISM IN AWADH REGION OF UTTAR PRADESH Manish Rai* and Anupama Srivastava** Abstract: Tourism is regarded as a positive force for the preservation of nature and culture. Heritage Tourism is regarded as a conceptual and operative basis that allows for a sustainable use of heritage assets. Heritage has been conceived as the identifying set of natural and cultural assets of a society with great potential for local tourist development. The concept of sustainability is based on three main goals: social, economic and ecological. Heritage tourism is a way of development intended to improve the quality of life of host communities and preservation of the environment. Heritage tourism has the potential to improve the economic vitality of numerous communities. The primary benefit of heritage tourism is its long-term economic value with high sustainable growth rates. It generates investment in the development of heritage product, complements and engages other tourism product, rejuvenates communities. It provides considerable non-economic benefits such as promoting, protecting and sustaining the heritage base; addressing traditions and values which define nations and communities; recognizing multicultural legacies linking nations; engaging local and regional governments; and furthering important educational functions. INTRODUCTION Culture and tourism have a mutually beneficial relationship which can strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness of tourism destinations. Culture is increasingly an important element of the tourism product, which creates distinctiveness. • Common Place- Identity of Indian Towns Through Historic Marketplaces: a Case of Lucknow
ISUF 2020: CITIES IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY COMMON PLACE- IDENTITY OF INDIAN TOWNS THROUGH HISTORIC MARKETPLACES: A CASE OF LUCKNOW Somya Mishra, Research Scholar, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India Prof. Debkumar Chakrabarti, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India ABSTRACT An identity of a place finds root in its skeletal features, associated activities, and the various experiences form critical features of that place. In Indian cities, marketplaces with their specific and unique architectural features have played an important role in an area's economic and social driving engines and become an integral part of the cultural geography. It is a result of the multi- cultural wealth of India through which we experience a peaceful co-existence and merging of different beliefs, religions, and traditions for decades. With an in-depth comparative analysis, the different aspects of various influences can be assessed and provide a basis for sustainable refurbishment and planning for the historical bazaars with maintaining its original identity and modern functions. The conservation and enhancement of individual as well as collective parts of the historic built environment and their settings contribute to the wellbeing of communities, to the region's economy, and the enjoyment of visitors. This paper looks into finding elements that create a common place-identity of historic Indian city Lucknow, a medieval city that lives through modern changes. It expresses the salient architectural heritage in the built environment of marketplaces of Lucknow, that needs to be restored for heritage preservation with current usage. Keywords: Place- identity, Indian Heritage Architecture, Historic Marketplaces, Lucknow. INTRODUCTION In modern times the unplanned development in historic cities has destroyed the view- scape of the otherwise beautifully designed aesthetics.
