Last week, “memorable mo- ments” 16 through 25 were unveiled. Here are those ten moments as the countdown continues: 16) In 1978, Mark Roth won a PBA record eight titles during the 35-event season which is still the record for most titles won in a season. 17) In 2009, Jason Belmonte became the first bowler using a two-handed delivery to win a PBA Tour title when he defeated Mike Fagan, 215-201, in The Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic in West Babylon, N.Y. The win kick-started a career that led to a record for the fastest player to reach $1 million in career earnings (131st event in 2017). Wes Malott held the record, reaching the million-dollar milestone when he won the 2013 U.S. Open in his ADULT/SENIOR VIP 180th event. 18) Billy Hardwick became the first player to complete what would later be known as the “PBA Triple Crown,” winning DOUBLES BOWLING the 1969 BPAA All-Star (later re-named as the U.S. Open), the 1963 PBA National Championship and the 1965 TOURNAMENT PBA Tournament of Champions. Hardwick is one of six players in the PBA’s 60-year history to accomplish the feat. 19) The PBA Tour’s 48th season started with a bang when Walter Ray Williams Jr. broke the Tour’s all-time titles record, SATURDAY, JULY 14 earning win No. 42 over Pete Weber, 289-236, in the 2006 Dydo Japan Cup in Tokyo. $25 Per Bowler. The 579 pinfall total remains a PBA record for highest combined score in a PBA title match. For more information contact: Jesse J. Dotson, Jr. 21) In 1997, the PBA St. Clair Classic was the last Pro Bowlers Tour event televised by ABC Sports, ending a 36-year (909) 628–3966 / Email: [email protected] HOTEL GROUP CODE: B/ASVIP run. The title match between Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Pete Weber was won by Williams, 206-195, and included an emotional farewell video tribute to ABC announcers Nelson “Bo” Burton Jr. and Chris Schenkel who broke down in tears at the end of the telecast. SENIOR FRIENDSHIP 22) By winning a PBA Senior Regional event in Taylorville, Ill. in 2002, Dick Weber became the first player to win PBA titles at any level in six consecutive decades. Weber won his first PBA title in the 1959 Paramus Eastern Open, the CLASSIC HANDICAP second PBA event ever held. It was the first of 23 consecutive top 24 finishes extending into 1962 - a record that TOURNAMENT has never been broken. 23) In the 1994 PBA National Championship at Ducat’s Imperial Lanes in Toledo, Ohio, Johnny Petraglia threw the OCTOBER 1–3 seventh televised 300 game in PBA history, defeating Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the second match and earning a MIXED TEAM–MIXED DOUBLES–SINGLES–ALL EVENTS! $100,000 bonus. 2015 MEDIA KIT Presented by: Tournament of Champions By Josh Hyde “Through these doors pass the world’s finest bowlers,” read the sign at the entrance to Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio. History has backed up this statement, as these lanes host the PBA Tournament of Champions. Upon entering, bowlers feel as if they are going to Augusta. To make this prestigious tournament, bowlers must win a PBA national title (up until 2011) to be eligible. The tournament format has been long and grueling with 24 games of qualifying and 24 games of round robin match play. When a bowler wins it all, they know they are one of game’s best. In the past, they received a white blazer and a lifetime exemption to the tournament upon winning. Winners still get a lifetime exemption but they no longer receive the white blazer. The Tournament of Champions was the only tournament that all of the bowlers cashed in, until 2011, after 2011 only a portion of the bowlers cashed. In 2013, the tournament went back to where the bowlers had to have a PBA Tour title to be eligible to bowl in the TOC and each bowler cashed in the tournament. The TOC is a prestigious bowling tournament that a pro-bowler can win. History Joe Joseph won the first Tournament of Champions in 1962. Jack Biondollio bowled the first televised 300 game in 1967. Don Johnson would make five consecutive shows from ’67-’71 including his famous 299 game against Dick Ritger’s 268-game. This would be the highest scoring match that would be a record for 23 years.
