BANKRUPT GOLF COURSES: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS AND STRATEGIES FOR REPURPOSING by BLAKE JEFFREY CONANT (Under the Direction of Ron Sawhill) ABSTRACT More than 800 golf courses have closed since 2003 and approximately 1,000 to 2,500 are projected to close in the next decade. Many of these courses are repurposed as high-end mixed-use development, high-density residential, or big-box development. The sustainable benefits the golf course once provided either diminish or leave completely. As our countryʼs 21st Century needs shift towards food, water, and energy security, bankrupt golf courses can offer repurposing opportunities to plan for those needs. The goal of golf course repurposing should be to provide similar or greater sustainable benefits as the golf course once did. Understanding how that land can be sustainably repurposed is vital for local communities, environments, and economies to thrive in the 21st Century. This thesis will offer suggestions, strategies, and solutions for repurposing bankrupt golf courses that have yet to be implemented in the United States. Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission meeting April 9, 2014 Agenda Item 7a, Exhibit A: Bandon Exchange – Final Order BEFORE THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION OF THE STATE OF OREGON IN THE MATTER OF THE REVIEW OF ) APPROVAL A REQUEST FOR AN EXCHANGE OF ) ORDER REAL PROPERTY PROPOSED BY ) 14-01 BANDON BIOTA, LLC ) This matter came before the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission (the “Commission”) on February 5 and April 9, 2014, as a request for an exchange of real property owned by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (the “Department”) initiated by Bandon Biota, LLC (“Bandon Biota”), pursuant to ORS 390.121 and OAR chapter 736, division 19. The request before the Commission involves: (1) the fee title transfer from the Department to Bandon Biota of a 280-acre non-oceanfront portion of the 878-acre Bandon State Natural Area encumbered with an easement for continued public use of a trail corridor in Coos County; (2) the fee title transfer from Bandon Biota to the Department of an 111-acre oceanfront parcel adjoining Bandon State Natural Area in Coos County; (3) the fee title transfer from Bandon Biota to the Department of a 97- acre riverfront parcel adjoining Bullards Beach State Park in Coos County; (4) a contribution from Bandon Biota worth $450,000 to facilitate government acquisition of approximately 11-acres of oceanfront parcels at Whale Cove in the viewshed of Rocky Creek State Wayside in Lincoln County; (5) a contribution from Bandon Biota worth $2,500,000 toward the Department’s acquisition of an addition to the state park system; (6) a contribution from Bandon Biota worth $300,000 toward the Department’s control of gorse on Bullards Beach State Park and the reconfigured Bandon State Natural Area in Coos County, and Cape Blanco State Park and the Floras Lake State Natural Area in Curry County; and (7) an easement from Bandon Biota to the Department across the Sheep Ranch at Bandon Dunes in Coos County for purposes of relocating and aligning the Oregon Coast Trail in accordance with the Department’s trail standards. -

Abstract The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most polyphagous herbivores feeding on cell contents of over 1100 plant species including more than 150 crops. However, despite its important pest status and a growing understanding of the molecular basis of its interactions with plant hosts, knowledge of the way mites interface with the plant while feeding and the plant damage directly inflicted by mites is lacking. Likewise, while the use of the reverse genetic tools in plants facilitated our understanding of the establishment of defense mechanisms against spider mite herbivory, such tools are lacking for spider mite, preventing the expansion of functional analysis to both sides of the interacting organisms. -

90 ENTOMOLOGISCHE BERICHTEN, DEEL 27, 1.V.1967 Tetranychus lintearius Dufour, 1832, is a valid species (Acar.) Notulae ad Tetranychidas 11 by G. L. VAN EYNDHOVEN Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam It has always been a problem whether or not Tetranychus lintearius Dufour, 1832, should be considered as a separate species. It is the type species of the genus Tetranychus Dufour, 1832, but nevertheless very insufficiently known. Owing to this fact the species has usually been synonymized with Tetranychus urticae C. L. Koch, 1836 ( = Tetranychus telarius (L., 1758) in the sense of Pritchard & Baker, 1955). Dufour described the mite in 1832 with the following characteristics: “Tetranychus lintearius, Tétranyque linger. Ovatus obtusus, ruber, pedibus dilutioribus ; dorso pedibusque pilis albidis longis distinctis. Hab. gregarius in arbustis quos telis vestit.” Two figures complete this Latin diagnosis. The additional description and the notes on the biology are written in French. Dufour found the specimens on the “ajonc”, the gorse (Ulex europaeus L.), at the environs of Saint Sever, Landes, France. Shrubs with a diameter of several feet were entirely enveloped by a large, milkwhite web. Although Dufour was aware of the existence of other spinning mites (Trom- hidium socium, telarium and tiliarium, p. 280), he had never seen them and so he thought his species to be entirely new. As he believed the legs to end in four little claws, he composed for his new genus the name Tetranychus, and as he was highly impressed by the heavy spinning, he introduced as species name the word linte¬ arius, meaning a merchant of linens or a linen-weaver. -

Taking it All In Bandon Preserve Written Contributions and Photos by Jeffrey Stein Feb 26, 2011 Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, the burgeoning destination on the Oregon coast, is poised to make another splash. Resort owner Mike Keiser brought in Bill Coore and Dave Zinkand, of the Coore & Crenshaw design team, to route a par-three golf course over 27 acres (part of the 250-acre H.L. McKee Preserve) adjacent to their earlier work at Bandon Trails (which opened in 2005). The thirteen-hole track [pending Keiser’s approval--a thirteenth hole was found in the lowest and westernmost part of the property, facing north] takes advantage of all wind directions as it heads out southwest, using the existing practice green as its first hole. The golfer continues to a promontory on the fifth tee that overlooks many sharp sandy peaks and valleys. Holes five through ten never face the same wind direction consecutively as the golf course curls in on itself for half of the round. Finally, the Preserve un-twists to the northeast and finishes in a natural hollow near the existing Bandon Trails clubhouse. The Double Green at the Preserve during Grow in The Bandon Preserve features an archipelago of tees and greens, islands of native red fescue grass floating seamlessly in the expanse of Bandon’s coastal dunescape. Both tees and greens are projected to average 6,500 square feet. When final dimensions are set for all playing surfaces, less than ten acres of turf will be maintained by resort staff. -
