The Iwf General Secretary New Headquaters OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Newsletter May 2017 THE IWF GENERAL SECRETARY NEW HEADQUATERS Walking distance from Tiananmen Square and two blocks away from the Chinese Olympic Committee, is the new headquarters of the I.W.F. General Secretary. The Government of China and the Chinese Olympic Committee have provided this magnificent headquarters for the sport of weightlifting. At the main entrance the five Continental Weightlifting logos signifies the importance of the five continents. The Presidents of the three continents, Pan American – Mr. Willian Ozuna, Europe – Dr. Antonio Urso, and Oceania – Hon. Marcus Stephen were invited to visit the IWF headquarters. Mr. Ma Wenguang also invited the IWF Vice President – Sam Coffa, the IWF Executive Board Member – Moira Lassen, Mr. Luigino Matos Musse Assistant to the President of Pan America and Paul Coffa – the General Secretary of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation. The magnificent entrance of the new headquarters in Beijing- China The logo of the IWF and the five continents signifies the Mr. Sam Coffa is warmly welcomed by the General Secretary importance of harmony and unison in weightlifting. Mr. Ma Wenguang The facilities of the headquarters is the ultimate. Apart from the administration offices, the headquarters also contains five very impressive large offices for the five continents fully furnished. The IWF VIP room is remarkable. In addition to this the Continents also have been allocated a large hall for functions and media conferences. Over the two day visit, the IWF General Secretary, Mr. Ma Wenguang, organised a meeting with the three continents. In due course the continents of Africa and Asia will be invited as well. During dinners, Mr. Ma had special guests from the Government and the Corporate Sector joining the leaders of the three continents. The three continental Presidents at the farewell dinner congratulated Mr. Ma for his endeavours in providing such a magnificent facility for the sport of weightlifting. Also a special thanks must go to Wang Yan for her kind assistance towards the guests. INSTITUTE LIFTERS COMPETING IN FRANCE Eleven lifters from the Oceania Weightlifting Institute have been invited to compete in France at the French National Championships to be held on June 10-11 in the city of Mont De Marsan. This trip has been kindly funded by the office of the High Commission of France to New Caledonia. The stay in France has been covered by the French Weightlifting Federation through the Sport Ministry. The squad is very pleased to be given this opportunity to compete as guests in France. During their stay, they will visit the excellent sporting facilities that Paris has. They will be staying and training at the National Institute of Sport INSEP. The delegation was very impressed with the facilities. They were also very happy to meet many of the top lifters of the region who are residents at the Institute. Many questions were asked to Paul Coffa, the General Secretary of the OWF, with regards to weightlifting. They were very pleased to hear that the OWF would assist in many ways with the running of the weightlifting event in 2023. The General Secretary of the OWF, Paul Coffa and his son Jamie Coffa, on their way to Sicily for a short break, paid a courtesy visit to the Italian and European President, Dr. Antonio Urso in Rome. Whilst in Rome they also visited the headquarters of the Italian National Olympic Committee (C.O.N.I) where they were welcomed by the President Mr Giovanni Malago and the Chief Executive Officer Mr Alberto Miglietta. The Institute lifters whilst in Europe for the French National Championships, have been invited by the Italian Federation to train for one week in Rome at the Army Olympic Sports Centre. Paul Coffa was invited to visit the Army Olympic Sports Centre where he met Colonel Remo Del Favero the Commander of the Centre. The institute team will be in Rome from June 12-18 Paul Coffa, CONI Chief Executive Officer Mr Alberto Miglietta and Dr Antonio Urso Paul Coffa with Antonio Urso and Jamie Coffa at the CONI headquarters Paul Coffa receives a plaque from Colonel Remo Del Favero at the Army Olympic Sports Centre in Rome PACIFIC LEGEND SPORTS OFFICIAL VISITS INSTITUTE Legendary athletics sports official and commentator, Mr Bob Snow from Australia, whilst in New Caledonia visited the Oceania Weightlifting Institute . Bob for decades has assisted with the running of athletics amongst the Pacific Island nations. He was very pleased to meet the weightlifters , especially the elite, such as Dika Toua, Steven Kari, and Morea Baru. Bob has at many different events seen these lifters in action. After eight long years of waiting, Ele Opeloge was awarded the silver medal which she rightfully deserved from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The first World Youth Champion from the region was Eileen Cikamatana from Fiji winning gold in the 69kg in the clean & jerk in Penang. Silver medal went to Kiana Elliot from Australia with a world class performance at the World Junior Championships in Georgia – our 15 lifters from 11 countries did a great job at the Rio Olympic Games. The performance in Rio by our two 62kg category lifters – Morea Baru from PNG and Nevo Ioane from Samoa – was brilliant. These are only some of the achievements of the OWF during 2016: The magnificent technical seminar held in Suva, upgraded 16 technical officials from the Pacific Islands to international category two level. The outstanding Oceania Championships and Olympic Qualification event was held in Suva, Fiji. And also the extraordinarily successful OTIP program and subsequent OTIP training camp in New Caledonia. It gives us immense pride and satisfaction in highlighting the OWF achievements for this year: FEBRUARY 2016 – EMAIL PACIFIC ISLANDS TOURNAMENT The 2016 Pacific Islands Email tournament turned out to be another great success. This tournament is producing some excellent results every year and it is good for the island nations as it kick starts their year of competition.

    OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Newsletter September 30, 2019 OWF President turns 50 years old. Happy Birthday!! The Hon. Marcus Stephen MP, President of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation, st turn 50 on the 1 October. On behalf of the OWF we wish Marcus all the very best on this special day of his life. And we wish him a healthy and prosperous future in the many years ahead of him. Everybody should be aware that if it wasn’t for Marcus Stephen – the Pacific island countries of Oceania would not be where they are today. It was Marcus who started that ball rolling, when he walked in to the Hawthorn Recreation Centre at the age of 16, where the famous Hawthorn Weightlifting Club was housed. Marcus who was student at St. Bedes College, was identified as a talent through the school program – the clean & jerk - that Victoria Weightlifting was running at the time. During that period of time, over 27,000 students competed annually in the ‘clean & jerk’ program in Victoria alone. I had the privilege of coaching Marcus from 1985 onwards. He became a truly world class athlete. Winning seven gold medals, and five silver medals at the Commonwealth Games. In addition a silver medal at the Athens World championships in 1999 where he clean & jerked a magic 172.5kg in the 62kg category. At that event he was amongst the greatest weightlifters in the world at the time, Lee Maosheng (China), Sabanis Leonidas (Greece), Sevdalin Minchev (Bulgaria), Nikolai Pashlov (Croazia), Shi Zhiyoung (China), Hafiz Suleymanoglu (Turkey), Yurik Sarkisian (Australia) and many other champion.

    2020 ELEIKO EMAIL INTERNATIONAL LIFTERS TOURNAMENT COVID 19 VIRUS DID NOT STOP LIFTERS 751 Individual lifters from 63 countries entered in this unique event. 393 MALE ENTRIES 358 FEMALE ENTRIES The Eleiko Email International Lifters Tournament turned out to be a great event. Great numbers of countries, great numbers of lifters and some great performances. Another plus to the OWF. With the assistance of Eleiko, the OWF provided the opportunity to all lifters from around the world who are experiencing the challenges of training properly on their own due to restrictions as a result of the Covid 19 Virus. This terrible virus, has devastated sports and lives everywhere. In our sport, many lifters have been stranded at home, training in their garages, basements, footpaths, backyards, under tents etc. A few have been fortunate to be able to train in gymnasiums however under enormous restrictions. ThE slogaN of This tournament waS to keep ThE drEam alive. To continue the momentum of regular training. We are delighted to see individual lifters from 63 different countries. Individual lifters in every sense. They did not represent countries or clubs. The OWF together with Eleiko made sure that this competition was open to anyone who does weightlifting and that they could freely enter. The event was scheduled for the 24th and 25th July. We selected this date because it would have been the opening ceremony of the 2020 Olympic Games. But as a result of Covid 19, the Olympic Year has now become 2021 – exactly 12 months from now. And tournaments like this, will keep the dream alive.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, February 17, 2020 Toua aims for Olympic history Dika Toua will make Olympic history again if she qualifies to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in July this year. The first time she entered the record books was at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 where she became the first female weightlifter to lift at the Olympics when women’s weightlifting competition was contested for the first time at the Olympic Games. Toua is now on the verge of another historical sporting moment for Team PNG as she pursues her fifth appearance at the Olympics. She will become the first female weightlifter in the world to compete at the Olympics five times. “It is very overwhelming for me, to be the first female weightlifter on the Olympic platform and now going to the Olympics for the fifth time is something I want to do, so I am working hard towards it and staying positive and really looking forward to it,” she said. Toua has been highly competitive in her last four Olympic appearance finishing 10th place in Sydney 2000 in the 48kg division, 6th in Athens in 2004, 8th in Beijing in 2008 and 12th place in London in the 53kg division. While her main focus now is to qualify, Toua remains confident in her experience and is also not ruling out the chance of an Olympic medal. Getting to Tokyo will not be easy for Toua as she needs to participate in a series of international events to qualify, similar to other weightlifters around the world.

    Latest News June 2019 For the first time ever, the Commonwealth Championships are being held in conjunction with the Pacific Games. In two weeks time, Apia, Samoa will be the host of the 16th PACIFIC GAMES and also of the Commonwealth Championships and Oceania Championships. The competition will be held at the Tuanaimoto Weightlifting sporting complex, which was built specifically for the sport of weightlifting in 2005. The weightlifting competition manager is Jerry Wallwork, the President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation. Twenty nine countries will take part in the Commonwealth Championships. Once again, the largest team will be coming from India. India has always been a big supporter of the Commonwealth and they are truly the backbone of Commonwealth competition. The Indian Weightlifting Federation should be congratulated for the enormous efforts they make towards the CWF. The Weightlifting stadium in Apia - Samoa Great battles are expected to take place in Samoa. In fact in many categories it is envisaged that the gold medal will be decided in the last couple of lifts. 273 lifters have entered and hopefully we will not lose too many due to non-compliance of ADAMS whereabouts. The Commonwealth Junior and Youth Championships and Oceania Junior and Youth Championships will take place at the same time. It is important to note that the Commonwealth Weightlifting Senior and Junior Championships will be a silver qualifying event for Tokyo 2020. To show just how important this event is, in attendance will be Dr. Tamas Ajan (President of the IWF), Mohammed Jalood, (General Secretary of the IWF) and Attila Adamfi (Director General of the IWF).
