University of Florida Football Post Game Notes Tostitos BCS National Championship Game Jan. 8, 2007 - Glendale, Ariz.

The Team • With the win tonight, the football team won the second national title in school history. UF won its first in 1996 with a tremendous all-around performance against Florida State in posting a 52-20 victory over Florida State on Jan. 2, 1997 in the in New Orleans. • UF finished the 2006 season with a 13-1 record to establish a single-season record for wins (UF was 12-1 in both 1995 and 1996). • Florida's win was its third over the nation's No. 1 ranked team in school history (vs. Florida State, 1/2/97, W, 52-20; vs. Florida State, 11/22/97, W, 32-29). • Florida’s 2006 schedule was ranked as the toughest in the nation by the NCAA this season. • Florida’s victory snapped Ohio State’s 19-game win streak, which was the longest in the nation entering tonight’s contest. • While Florida has been celebrating 100 years of Gator football throughout the season, 2006 is also the 10th anniversary of the school’s first football national title. UF defeated Florida State, 52-20, in the Sugar Bowl to secure the 1996 championship. • Florida won back-to-back bowl games for the sixth time in school history and has won three straight bowl games for the first time since doing so from 1996-98. • Florida made its 13th January appearance in the past 14 years. The Tostitos BCS Championship Game marks the 17th January bowl game in school history. • Florida improved its record to 16-18 all-time in bowls and is 6-3 against Big 10 members it has faced in those games (Illinois, 1-0; Iowa, 2-1; Michigan, 0-1; Michigan State, 0-1; Ohio State, 1- 0); Penn State, 2-0). • The Gators made their 16th-straight bowl appearance to extend their current school record. The mark is the longest active streak among SEC teams and represents the third-longest in the nation. • Florida improved to 3-1 all-time in BCS bowl games (BCS rankings are used). • Coach Meyer earned his fourth bowl victory in the last four years to become one of two head coach in the nation to do so in the last four years. Coach Tressel entered tonight's game having led the Buckeyes to wins in each of the last four prior to this season and Coach Tom O'Brien has won six in a row, however, he did not coach BC in their bowl game this year. • Ohio State was the 12th ranked opponent Coach Meyer has faced since arriving in Gainesville. In 2005, he won a first-year head coach school-record four games against ranked opponents. Coach Meyer is 9-3 against ranked opponents while at Florida. • Including bowl games, bye weeks, mid-week games and season openers, Coach Meyer-led teams are 21-2 (.913) all-time when having more than one week to prepare for a game.

The Players • ’s touchdown reception on Florida’s opening drive was his team-leading 10th of the season (tied for ninth-highest single-season total in Gator history with six others). • ’s sack of on third down of Ohio State’s opening drive was his team-leading ninth of the year. Harvey added another on Ohio State’s second drive to bring his total to 10 on the year the total is tied for ninth in single-season. It is also the fourth- highest total by a UF lineman. • ’s four-yard run for a touchdown on UF’s second drive of the game was his third rushing touchdown of the year and fifth of the year overall. • Reggie Lewis’ interception with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter was his second of the season. Troy Smith entered the game with five interceptions this season. • opened the game going 9-of-9 for 99 yards before throwing an incompletion. • DeShawn Wynn’s two-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter was the 25th of his career, which is now tied for the sixth-most in Florida history with Buford Long (1950-52). • Florida did not allow a rushing yard to Ohio State in the first quarter. • Chris Hetland’s 42-yard field goal in the second quarter was his longest of the season. This is the first time he has connected on two field goals in one game this season. • UF’s captains for tonight’s game are Chris Leak, , and Ray McDonald.

The Game • Florida’s 34first half points are the most by the Gators in an opening half against a ranked team this season. Ohio State entered the game allowing 10.4 per game this season. The Florida Athletic Program • Florida became the first NCAA Division I-A school to capture the football and men's basketball national title in the same calendar year. Only 10 schools hold national title in football and basketball. • The Gator football team won the school’s 20th national championship. The men’s basketball team, coached by Billy Donovan, brought home the most recent hardware with a 73-57 triumph over UCLA last April in Indianapolis.
