BMW Clubs' World 3/13
www.bmw-clubs-international.com | BMW Clubs’ World | 11th year | Edition 3 | August 2013 BMW Clubs’ World 3/13 BMW Clubs International Council Newsletter BMW MOTORRAD DAYS 2013 BMW MOA 30TH INTERNATIONAL 40 YEARS BMW INTERNATIONAL BMW COUPÉ MEETING DINGOLFING PLANT RALLY 2013 EditoRIAL Dear BMW Club members, Every now and then the time is right for a few moments of reflec- tion. One of these times is now, as I prepare to stand down from my 17 years’ involvement with the Council and the last 10 years as its Chairman. Along the way there have been many memorable moments. These include events such as the IAA in Frankfurt, Techno Clas- sica, the Mille Miglia, the Villa D’Este Concorso, and of course BMW Motorrad Days. And I think not just of the events, but often the drives to get there. Be it through the scenery of Bavaria and northern Italy, across Death Valley, along the coast near Cape Town or the pristine beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. Events and Council meetings themselves invoke many fond memories, from a unique dinner on the 50 yard line in the Skydome in Toronto, to a boisterous beer or three in the beer tents at several Oktoberfests in Munich. But one factor remained constant, wherever I was, and whatever I was doing, I was sharing the ex- perience with BMW friends. I have always said clubs are not formed by cars or motorcycles, but by people – passionate and enthusiastic BMW owners. I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous members from clubs throughout the world as well as from the BMW corporate family. -

(How is Fasching celebrated today?) , Dance of the Coopers: Schäfflertanz Rathaus-Glockenspiel The Rathaus-Glockenspiel ofMunich is a tourist attraction in Marienplatz, the heart ofMunich.[11 Part of tbe second construction phase of the New Town Hall, it dates from 1908. Every day at 11 a.m. (as weil as 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. in summer) it cbimes and re-enacts two stories from the 16th century to tbe amusement of mass crowds of tourists and locals. lt consists of 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures. The top half of the Glockenspiel tells the story of tbe marriage of tbe local Duke Wilhelm V (who also founded the world famous Hofbräuhaus) to Renata of Lorraine. In honour ofthe happy couple there is a joust with life-sized knigbts on horseback representing Bavaria (in white and blue) and Lothringen (in red and white). The Bavarian knight wins every time, of course. (21 ' This is tben followed by the bottom half and second story: Schäfflertanz (the coopers' dance). According to myth, ,!517 was a year of plague in Munich. Tbe coopers are said to have danced througb the streets to "bring fresh vitality to fearful dispositions." The coopers remained loyal to the duke, and their dance came to symbolize perseverance and loyalty to authority tbrougb difficult times. By tradition, the dance is performed in Munich every seven years. This was described in 1700 as "an age-old The Glockenspiel at Marienplatz custorn", but the current dance was defincd only in 1871. -

The Effects of the Design and Land-Use Diversity of the Built Environment on Cycling in Munich
Technical University of Munich – Professor for Modeling Spatial Mobility Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Moeckel Arcisstraße 21, 80333 München, www.msm.bgu.tum.de Master’s Thesis The Effects of the Design and Land-Use Diversity of the Built Environment on Cycling in Munich Author: Thomas M. Scriba Supervision: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Moeckel Date of Submission: March 19, 2018 Declaration I hereby confirm that this thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Science in Transportation Systems at the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München). This thesis has been composed entirely by myself and is based solely on the results of my own work, unless stated otherwise. No other person’s work has been used without due acknowledgement. This thesis has not been submitted for any other degree or professional qualification. ________________________________ Thomas M. Scriba ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the influences the built environment in Munich has on the rates of cycling exhibited by the various 25 city districts. As cities strive to reduce congestions and commute times, many of them, including Munich, have looked to the bicycle as a solution. Previous research shows that increased shared of cycling are associated with better living conditions and lower rates of air pollution. The City of Munich has done much to support cycling in recent decades. Cycling infrastructure has been built up, routes throughout the city marked with new signage, pavement marking improved to increase motorists’ awareness, and organizations supporting cycling have run publicity and informational campaigns and events to raise the public profile of cycling. This thesis utilizes a mixed-method approach combining a quantitative analysis of geographic built environment and demographic/social data with a qualitative study comprised of field surveys in 6 of the 25 districts. -
Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer
FALL 1991 235 Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer Munich is both a theatrical city and a city with a great deal of theatre. Throughout the city are interesting theatre buildings, important theatre collections, museums with theatrical material, and statues relating to theatre. The theatres, their archives, and theatre collections are accessible and public transportation in Munich is excellent. Theatre ranges from puppet shows to the classics-indeed, one can see Faust performed as a puppet show as Goethe first intended it. In the handsome theatre lobbies, there is an air of excitement and sophistication as the theatre-goers drink champagne and discuss the performances. The audiences are very responsive: they laugh a great deal in plays received very earnestly in America, applaud thunderously when a play is good, and boo long and loud when they do not care for a production. In order to give a picture of theatre research opportunities various types of productions will be described, followed by a discussion of the theatre museums and several of the famous theatres in the city. In May 1991 there were several dozen plays, ballets, operas and other theatrical performances from which to choose. There are major subsidized theatres and opera houses, small commercial theatres, theatres for children, and experimental groups. A range of plays available on a given night included Entertaining Mr. Sloane, The Threepenny Opera, Cooney and Chapman's Not Now, Darling, Durrenmatt's The Accident, and Jesus Christ Superstar. There were performances of a British science-fiction comedy presented by the Action Theatre London (in English) called Black Magic-Blue Love, a Psychothriller Murder Voices, and an evening of song and acting in the OFF-OFF-Theater Club. -
