Redshirt junior Tyler Graff captured the third All-America honor of his career at the 2013 Mar. 21-23 NCAA Championships T-27th/16.5 pts. NCAA Wrestling Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Graff earned the highest finish of his career, winning a third-place title at 133 lbs., after previously finishing in fifth-place at both the 2011 and 2010 championships. * Big Ten Conference match --Note: Rankings reflect opponent’s NWCA/Division I poll The No. 3-seeded Graff began his run through the 133 lbs., bracket with a 13-4 major deci- ranking at time of match sion victory over Maryland’s Geoffrey Alexander. Graff entered the third period of the match with a 4-1 lead, but unleasehed a flurry of takedowns -- four in total -- in the final minute of the match to secure the major decision win. Next up for the Loveland, Colo., native was a second round match-up with Lehigh’s Randy Cruz. The match was tight throughout and remained scoreless heading into the third period. ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS Graff broke through with a reversal to take the match’s first lead and was able to ride out Wrestling contact: Ryan Evans Cruz for the remainder of the period, tacking on a ride time point to win 3-0. Email: [email protected] In the quarterfinals, Graff faced Missouri’s sixth-seeded Nathan McCormick. Graff defeated McCormick, 5-3, to advance to the semi-finals and assure himself of his third All-America honor. Secondary contact: Anna Poulter-Hendrickson With the win, Graff became the ninth three-time All-American in Wisconsin history. Email: [email protected] Offi ce Phone: 608-262-3545 WIth a spot in the national title match on the line in the semifinals, Graff and Iowa’s No. 2-seeded Tony Ramos engaged in another class dual after their tightly-contested match in the semifinals at the 2013 Big Ten Championships. Again Graff and Ramos went down to the wire. Graff built a 4-2 lead heading into the third period with a takedown in the first and a reversal in the second, but surrendered an escape to Ramos and was then hit with his second stalling warning giving Ramos a point and tying the score to send the match to overtime. It took until the second sudden victory period for the match to be decided. In that period, Graff took a shot for Ramos’ legs, but came up empty, allowing Ramos to scramble for the takedown and the 6-4 win. The loss dropped Graff into the semifinals of the consola- tion bracket. Showing the leadership he had all season, Graff quickly erased the disappointment from his loss to Ramos and bounced back to close out the championships strong in the consolation bracket. Graff began his run for third place with a win over Minnesota’s No. 5-seeded Chris Dardanes. Graff scored two takedowns and a reversal in the match before tacking on a ride time point to finish off the 7-4 victory and advance to the third-place match. In the bronze medal match against Edinboro’s No. 4-seeded A.J.Schopp, Graff got a first peri- od takedown, but found himself in unfamiliar territory when, after surrendering a three-point near fall in the second period, he trailed in regulation for the first time at the championships. Graff quickly responded with a reversal in the waning seconds of the second to re-build a lead that he would not again relinquish. Graff added a takedown in the third period against Schopp to secure a 6-3 victory and the third-place title.
