So, rather than starting to read from the front and running out of steam after a few chapters, you may want to focus on the areas of your vision that need most work, and skim through the other chapters. It has been designed to live on your desk or in your briefcase, rather than to sit on your bookshelf. The greatest complement I had on the last brandgym book, Brand Stretch, was seeing a copy of it on a client’s desk, full of highlighter pen, with corners of pages turned down to mark the bits of most interest. Here’s hoping that you’ll do the same to this book. The Toolkit section at the back has tools, tips and expert partner contact details that have been road-tested on over 100 projects over the last 15 years. Tools One of the key features of the book is a set of practical tools that you can use yourself. Wherever you see the tool sign , a blank copy of the template can be found in the toolbox at the end of the book. Some of these were used in the first two brandgym books, but many of them are either totally new or upgraded versions. brandgym network A new feature for this book is details of some of the best partner companies the brandgym has worked with over the last 5 years. Rather than build our own ’factory’ full of different types of consultant, the brandgym only has a small number of senior ’coaches’ who work with a brand team and their agency. We pull in experts on a flexible basis, depending on the needs of the project, a bit like a Hollywood film producer who selects the best talent for a movie project (though creating a brand vision for pasta sauce is not quite the same as working on the latest Tom Cruise blockbuster). xii WARNING: DON’T READ THIS BOOK brandgym.com Our virtual brandgym has all the tools and, if you want extra copies, you can download them from there. And a final warning. If you are expecting some revolutionary ideas or breakthrough concepts you may want to put the book back on the shelf or send it back to Amazon for a refund. Rather, this is one small part of a bigger quest to help you cut through the bull**** and buzzwords of branding so that it adds more value for your business. It is light on theory and heavy on practical tips, tricks and tools to help increase the chances of creating a vision that actually has some impact on your business, rather than gathering dust in a frame on the wall or sitting unused in a cupboard. wheresthesausage.com This is my blog on branding, with loads of interesting, topical brand stories. You can dip in and out or sign up for weekly email updates The Oscar Acceptance Speech Thanks to Claire Plimmer and all the Wiley team for helping create the brandgym series of books that allows me to share my branding tips, tools and tricks with a global audience.

  • Robert De Niro's Raging Bull

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 98: Robert Rodriguez Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Hello, ladies and germs, puppies and kittens. Meow. This is Tim Ferriss and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world class performers, to teas out the routines, the habits, the books, the influences, everything that you can use, that you can replicated from their best practices. And this episode is a real treat. If you loved the Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jon Favreau or Matt Mullenweg episodes, for instance, you are going to love this one. We have a film director, screen writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, and musician. His name is Robert Rodriguez. His story is so good. While he was a student at University of Texas at Austin, he wrote the script to his first feature film when he was sequestered in a drug research facility as a paid subject in a clinical experiment. So he sold his body for science so that he could make art. And that paycheck covered the cost of shooting his film. Now, what film was that? The film was Element Mariachi, which went on to win the coveted Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival and became the lowest budget movie ever released by a major studio. He went on then, of course, to write and produce a lot, and direct and edit and so on, a lot of films. He’s really a jack of all trades, master of many because he’s had to operate with such low budgets and be so resourceful.

  • Documenting the Documentary Grant.Indd 522 10/3/13 10:08 AM Borat 523
Chapter 31 Cultural Learnings of Borat for Make Benefit Glorious Study of Documentary Leshu Torchin Genre designations can reflect cultural understandings of boundaries between perception and reality, or more aptly, distinctions between ac- cepted truths and fictions, or even between right and wrong. Borat: Cul- tural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Larry Charles, 2006) challenges cultural assumptions by challenging our generic assumptions. The continuing struggle to define the film reflected charged territory of categorization, as if locating the genre would secure the meaning and the implications of Borat. Most efforts to categorize it focused on the humor, referring to it as mockumentary and comedy. But such classifications do not account for how Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) interacts with people onscreen or for Baron Cohen’s own claims that these encounters produce significant information about the world. Fictional genres always bear some degree of indexical relationship to the lived world (Sobchack), and that relationship only intensifies in a tradi- tional documentary. Borat, however, confuses these genres: a fictional TV host steps out of the mock travelogue on his fictional hometown and steps into a journey through a real America. The indexical relationship between the screen world and the real world varies, then, with almost every scene, sometimes working as fiction, sometimes as documentary, sometimes as mockumentary. In doing so, the film challenges the cultural assumptions that inhere to expectations of genre, playing with the ways the West (for 13500-Documenting the Documentary_Grant.indd 522 10/3/13 10:08 AM Borat 523 lack of a better shorthand) has mapped the world within the ostensibly rational discourses of nonfiction.

  • Mark Ivanir | Biography
MARK IVANIR | BIOGRAPHY Mark Ivanir has been working as a professional film and television actor in Los Angeles since 2001. His first major film role was in Steven Spielberg's 1993 Oscar winning epic SCHINDLER'S LIST. He rejoined with Spielberg twice, first for a cameo appearance in TERMINAL, then again for THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. A pivotal role in Robert De Niro's 2006 film, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, landed Mark a role in Barry Levinson's WHAT JUST HAPPENED, this time acting alongside De Niro. Many films followed. Mark has booked over 35 Guest Star and Guest Lead roles on television. Ivanir's road to Hollywood was circuitous at best. Born in the communist Ukraine, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1972. After being cast by Spielberg in SCHINDLER'S LIST, Ivanir moved to London to study with Philippe Gaulier and the actors of the Theater De Complicite. During this stint, he landed roles in THE MAN WHO CRIED (with Johnny Depp) and SECRET AFFAIR which encouraged him to relocate to Hollywood. Ever since, Mark has been working on films in the US, in Europe and in Israel. In Germany he has been working with Dennis Gansel on THE FOURTH STATE and with Dominik Graf on the highly acclaimed mini-series IN THE FACE OF THE CRIME. In Europe, Mark was also working with Fernando Meirelles on his episodic feature film 360. Most recently, Mark co-starred alongside Catherine Keener, Philipp Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken in A LATE QUARTET. Mark currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters.
