Braxton is no stranger to these types of performances as he recorded the first triple-double in school history last season in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson and leads Saint Francis with 26 career double-doubles.
GASKINS GETS GOING After missing his first 17 field goals attempts to start the season, junior guard Randall Gaskins Jr. broke out in a big way on Tuesday night with career-highs in points with 23 and assists with six on 10-13 shooting in a win over Bloomsburg. Gaskins has scored in double figures 19 times in his career. Tuesday was his second career game with 20 or more points as his original career-high of 20 came against Robert Morris as a freshman.
BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE Saint Francis failed to shoot 40% or better in just five of 31 games last season, but was held under the mark in all of its first five games this season. The Red Flash put an emphatic end to the streak by hitting on 61.8% of its field goals, its best percentage since a win over Navy on Nov. 29, 2014. The 113 total points were only six shy of the DeGol Arena scoring record set vs. Chatham.
SHARING THE BASKETBALL The Red Flash recorded a season-high 26 assists on Tuesday, its highest total since recording 30 vs. Chatham on Nov. 19, 2016. King, Gaskins Jr. and sophomore Ramiir Dixon-Conover led Saint Francis with six points apiece. Everybody in the lineup benefitted as Saint Francis put six different scorers in double figures and 10 players with five or more points. SFU’s bench scored a season- high 55 points in the victory.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE According to the KenPom adjusted strength of schedule metric, Saint Francis has played the most difficult schedule in the country when taking into account Division I games only. Four of SFU’s first five opponents are currently ranked in the AP Poll with SFU’s opponents going a combined 19-5 this season.
WORKING THROUGH A SLUMP SFU’s 37 points on Saturday were its fewest since scoring 37 at Cincinnati on Nov. 14, 2014. The Red Flash shot 25.9% from the field in the loss, its lowest field goal percentage in a game since shooting 25.0% at Wagner on February 27, 2014. Saint Francis hasn’t shot 40% or higher from the field in a game this season after doing so in 26 of 31 contests last season.
REBOUNDING IMPROVEMENT Saint Francis recorded a +2.0 rebounding margin vs. No. 13 Virginia Tech on Saturday and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, its fourth game with 15 or more offensive rebounds. SFU ranks t-7 in all of Division I in offensive rebounds per game at 16.50 per contest.
KEEPING IT CLOSE In all three of its losses, SFU has been within six points of the lead at some stage in the second half. The Red Flash trailed current No. 22 Buffalo 52-51 with 12 minutes to play, current No. 17 UCLA 38-33 with 18:30 to play, and current No. 7 North Carolina 58-52 with 15:45 to play. If SFU could pull off the upset on Saturday, it would be its first win over a ranked opponent in its last 50 tries.
REBOUNDING WIZARD Junior Keith Braxton is proving last year’s elite rebounding numbers weren’t a fluke. After leading the NEC and all guards among NCAA Division I in rebounding last season at 9.5 per game, Braxton has increased those numbers through the first four games this season despite playing against taller, more athletic competition. Braxton has pulled down nine or more rebounds in all four games, averaging a conference-best 10.5 rpg. He also leads the team in assists with 10 and steals with 11, and is second on the team in scoring at 14.8 ppg.
BRAXTON HITS 1K It was just a matter of time before junior Keith Braxton went over 1,000 career points, which he did in SFU’s 80-62 win over Morgan State on Friday. Braxton is the quickest SFU player to 1,000 since Darshan Luckey reached the mark after his sophomore season in 2003-04. Braxton has needed just 67 games to reach 1,000, an average of 15.1 ppg. Luckey reached the mark after just 53 games.
HITTING THE OFFENSIVE GLASS Saint Francis has been relentless on the offensive glass, averaging 17.7 offensive rebounds per game. SFU’s season high in 2017-18 was 15 but the Red Flash has eclipsed that in each of its first three games, including a season-high 19 at UCLA.
