Northeast Conference Announces 25th Anniversary Men’s Team

Somerset, NJ -- As part of its year long Silver Anniversary celebration, the Northeast Confer- ence 25th Anniversary Men’s Basketball Team was announced today by Commissioner John Iamarino. The ten-member team was voted on by a blue ribbon panel consisting of current and former NEC coaches, administrators and media members.

Long Island and St. Francis (PA) had two players selected to the team, with one honoree apiece from Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, Wagner and former NEC members Loyola (MD) and Marist. The 25th Anniversary team also includes:

• Three players selected to the NEC All-Decade team and 20th Anniversary team (, and ) • All five players selected to the NEC All-Decade team (Joe Anderson, Terrance Bailey, Carey Scurry, Rik Smits and ) • All five players selected to the NEC 20th Anniversary team (Terrance Bailey, , Charles Jones, Carey Scurry and Rik Smits) • Seven players with NBA playing experience (Alex Blackwell, , Mike Iuzzolino, Charles Jones, Mike Morrison, Carey Scurry and Rik Smits) • Six players who were NBA draft picks (Terrance Bailey, Corsley Edwards, Mike Iuzzolino, Mike Morrison, Carey Scurry and Rik Smits) • Seven players who were named NEC Player of the Year (Terrance Bailey, Corsley Edwards, Mike Iuzzolino, Charles Jones, Carey Scurry, Rik Smits and Desi Wilson) • Four players who were three-time first team All-NEC selections (Joe Anderson, Terrance Bailey, Alex Blackwell and Rik Smits) • One Academic All-American of the Year (Mike Iuzzolino)

Terrance Bailey, Wagner The most prolific scorer in NEC history...Previously selected to the NEC All-Decade team and 20th Anniversary team...Bailey’s 2,591 career points are nearly 300 more than the next closest NEC player and his single-season totals of 854 points as a junior and 788 as a senior rank him third and fourth, respectively, on the all-time conference list...Named NEC Player of the Year for the 1985-86 season and was a three-time first team league all-star...Led nation in scoring as a junior in 1985-86 with 29.4 ppg. Also topped NEC in scoring as a junior and senior...Not just a shooter from the outside, the 6-2 guard also tallied 136 dunks over course of his career...Drafted by the in the second round of the 1987 draft but did not play in the NBA...Currently works as a preschool teacher in Trenton.

Alex Blackwell, Monmouth A dynamic inside persence during one of the glory periods for Monmouth hoops in the early 90’s...A three-time first team all-NEC honoree...Named NEC Newcomer of the Year and NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player as a sophomore in 1989-90...Established Monmouth single-season record with 660 points in 1990-91...Tied for first on Monmouth’s career scoring chart and stands 12th in NEC history with 1,749 points. Also ranks fourth on the Hawks’ all-time chart with 679...Won a gold medal representing the United States at the 1991 World University Games...Spent the 1992-93 season with the after signing as a free agent...Named to the CBA all-star team in 1995- 96...Spent the last ten years playing in Europe and South America and remains active, currently playing in Brazil.

Corsley Edwards, Central Connecticut State The lone honoree who has competed since the turn of the millennium...Named the 2001-02 NEC Player of the Year...A three-time all-NEC selection, including first team honors as a junior and senior...Finished as the Blue Devils’ second all-time leading scorer and 15th in NEC history with 1,731 points. Also ranks fourth on the league’s career rebounding chart and sixth at CCSU with 966 boards...Won two NEC titles while at CCSU...Part of 2001-02 team that set a conference record with 27 victories, including an NEC-best 19 straight at one point...Became the first NEC player drafted in 11 years when chosen by the in the second round in 2002...Played for the New Orleans Hornets in 2003-04...Named to the CBA All-Rookie team and competed in the CBA All-Star game in 2003...Won CBA title and was named playoff MVP with the Sioux City Skyforce in 2005...Currently playing professionally in Spain.

Mike Iuzzolino, St. Francis (PA) One of the deadliest shooters in NEC history...Previously selected to the NEC 20th Anniversary team...Tabbed NEC Player of the Year and postseason tournament MVP in 1991 after leading the Red Flash to a school-record 24 wins and the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth...Two-time first team all-NEC selection after transferring from Penn State...Scored 1,346 points and twice led the conference in three- point percentage...Shot 52.3 percent from three-point range and hit 182 trifectas in two years with the Red Flash...Established school records with 772 points and 24.1 ppg in 1990-91...Two-time first team GTE Academic All-American...Named Academic All-American of the Year for men’s basketball in 1991...Drafted in the second round of the 1991 NBA draft by Dallas and played two seasons for the Mavericks, averaging 9.0 ppg...Enjoyed long professional career, first competing in the CBA, followed by a six-year stint in Italy and two more seasons in Spain...Currently serves as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Duquesne.

Charles Jones, Long Island A pure scorer who lit up Long Island’s Schwartz in his two years with the club from 1996-98...Previously selected to the NEC 20th Anniversary team...After transferring from Rutgers, became only the seventh player in NCAA history to lead the nation in scoring in back-to- back seasons, averaging 30.1 ppg in 1996-97 and 29.0 ppg as a senior in 1997-98...Joined Marist’s Rik Smits as the only two-time winners of the NEC Player of the Year award...Selected as Metropolitan Player of the Year after a junior campaign that saw the Blackbirds capture the NEC championship...Despite playing just two years, ranks third on Long Island’s all-time scoring list and tenth in NEC history with 1,772 points...Maintains the top-two positions on the NEC single-season scoring list with 903 and 869 points, respectively...Holds six NEC single-season records (scoring, scoring average, field goals, attempts, three-pointers, three-point attempts)...Signed with the as a free agent in 1998-99 and went on to play for the in 1999-00...Has played professionally in the USBL, as well as overseas in Italy and Greece...Recently suited up in the ABA for the Strong Island Sound and in the CBA for the Albany Patroons.

(NEC 25th Anniversary Men’s Basketball Team; 2-of-3) Mike Morrison, Loyola (MD) A lightning quick guard who was one of the top NEC guards of the 80s...The fourth all-time leading scorer for Loyola (MD) and 20th on the NEC’s career list...Tabbed to the All-NEC first team as a junior and senior...Finished second in the conference in scoring with 22.3 points per game in 1987-88 and third with 21.8 points per game in 1988-89...Scored more than 20 points 34 times during career...Became the first Greyhound of the modern era drafted by the NBA, going to the in the second round in 1989. Played with Phoenix in 1989-90 and saw considerable action as the Suns advanced to the NBA Western Conference finals...Also played in the CBA and Global Basketball League before heading overseas to compete in both Australia and Venezuela.

Carey Scurry, Long Island A ferocious competitor and one of the top big-men in NEC annals...Previously selected to the NEC All-Decade team and 20th Anniverary team...Chosen NEC Player of the Year in 1984-85 and was a two-time first team all-star...Tied for the national rebounding crown in 1983-84 with 13.5 per game and ranked in the NCAA top-five in shot blocking in 1982-83 and 1983-84...Helped lead the Blackbirds to the NEC title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1984...Despite playing only three seasons, remains one of just two players in NEC history (along with CCSU’s Ron Robinson) to pull-down 1,000 career rebounds (1,013)...Ranks first at Long Island and second on the NEC’s career rebounding chart...Scored 1,413 career points...In three seasons, Long Island posted a 55-33 record and had two 20-win campaigns...Drafted in the second round by Utah in 1985. Played four years with the Jazz, one with the Knicks and then for several years professionally in France.

Rik Smits, Marist Nicknamed the “Dunking Dutchman,” the Eindhoven Holland native was both the tallest (7’4”) and most decorated player in NEC history...Previously selected as the NEC Player of the Decade and 20th Anniverary Most Valuable Player...Earned NEC Player of the Year honors after the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons and was a three-time first team all-league selection...One of just two NEC competitors to win Player of the Year accolades twice (LIU’s Charles Jones is the other)...Named an AP Honorable Mention All-American in 1988...Selected 1984-85 NEC Newcomer of the Year...Ranks sixth on the NEC all-time scoring list with 1,945 points and 12th on the rebounding chart with 811...Established 25 school records at Marist and helped lead the Red Foxes to back-to-back NEC titles in 1986 and 1987...Represented Holland as a member of the Dutch National Team following sophomore and junior seasons...Tabbed by Indiana as the second overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft...Played entire 12-year career for the Pacers and was selected to the NBA All-Star team in 1998...Finished professional career as Indiana’s all-time blocked shots leader with 1,111, and averaged 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game...Competed for the NBA Championship in 2000 when the Pacers fell to the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-2.

Desi Wilson, Fairleigh Dickinson Terrific athlete who went on to play professional , including a stint with the in 1996...Voted NEC Player of the Year in 1989-90...Two-time first team All-NEC award winner and the 1988-89 NEC Newcomer of the Year...All-American honorable mention in 1989-90...Despite playing just three seasons, stands seventh on the NEC career list with 1,902 points and is Fairleigh Dickinson’s all-time leading scorer...Led conference in scoring and rebounding as a junior in 1989-90 with 22.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game...Drafted out of high school by the Boston Red Sox...The 15-year veteran continues to play baseball professionally, including winning Most Valuable Player honors for the Golden Baseball League this past summer.
