Strength and CoNditioning

In 2014, athletics moved into a new 3,000 square-foot area strength & conditioning facility, and in 2015, with the help of donors, UTRGV Athletics purchased brand new speed and strength equipment, as well as free weight and aerobic/cardio equipment. UTRGV Athletics also acquired new power racks, platforms, benches and dumbbells.

For today’s student-athletes, training and conditioning is a year-round commitment. Balancing the rigors of competing at the collegiate level with the demands of the classroom is one of the greatest challenges our student-athletes face. That is why it is so essential that the department of intercollegiate athletics provides our student-athletes with access to hands-on academic support.

Located in the Academic Services Building, the Victory Center is an integral part of the life of our student-athletes and has a vast amount of services and assistance available.

The Victory Center is structured after the principles of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is created to provide student- athletes with five basic components: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Community Service, Career Development and Personal Development.

UTRGV has approximately 275 student-athletes, including approximately 150 freshmen and transfers, who are required to attend study hall and specially designed workshops that assist them in acclimating to college life and living away from home. Student-athletes must dedicate anywhere from six to 10 hours each week to study hall as they work toward their ultimate goal, graduation.

The Victory Center provides student-athletes access to computers, tutors and other resources. The Greatest of All-Time

A 6-9 power forward/center out of San Marcos, Luke Jackson is widely considered to be the greatest player to every wear this program's uniform.

Jackson spent three seasons with the Broncs, leading them to the 1963 NAIA National Championship as a junior by scoring 25 points and pulling in 25 rebounds to beat Western Carolina 73-62. Throughout the NAIA National Tournament, Jackson averaged 26.4 points and 18.6 rebounds per game to earn the Most Valuable Player award.

It was one of three NAIA National Tournament appearances for the Broncs during Jackson's time there, as he led the Broncs back to the NAIA National Championship game in 1964 as well.

A two-time All-American, Jackson ranks first in program history in career field goal percentage (.547), free throws made (443) and free throws attempted (605), second in points scored (1,813), rebounds (1,393) and field goals made (685), and sixth in field goals attempted (1,252). His name is also in the Top 10 for single- season records 17 times and single-game records eight times.

Shortly after graduating, Jackson went on to help Team USA win the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.

Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the fourth overall pick of the 1964 NBA Draft, Jackson went on to play in 522 games across eight seasons in the NBA, averaging 9.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. During the 1964-65 season, Jackson was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team and the NBA All-Star Team. He averaged a career-high 14.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. Jackson was a starter alongside Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain on the 1966-67 76ers squad that won the NBA Championship.

Jackson was inducted into the inaugural UTPA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. His jersey number, 54, which was the first to be retired in school history, one of just two to be retired in school history, and the only one to be retired across all sports, hangs proudly in the rafters of the UTRGV Fieldhouse. 1967-68 NCAA Division II Tournament Participants

The 1960s were a time of change for Pan American athletics.

After transitioning from being a junior college to a four-year institution in 1952, Pan American College became a member of the NAIA. In 1962-63, the Broncs held dual membership with the NAIA and NCAA Division II. The Broncs began transitioning to the NCAA Division I level in 1965-66 as the men’s tennis team made the jump and immediately reached the NCAA Championships. The men’s basketball team didn’t follow until 1968-69, allowing them to take part not only in the 1965-66 NAIA District Playoffs, but the 1967-68 NCAA Division II Tournament as well.

In the program’s only NCAA Tournament appearance, the Broncs knocked off Jackson State in the first round 96-73 before falling to Trinity in the Southwestern Regional Finals 87-83 in overtime.

The Broncs finished the season 21-6. In those six losses, the Broncs’ average margin of defeat was just 5.67 points per game. Even more impressively, though, is that after starting the season 2-3, the Broncs went 19-3 the rest of the way, including winning streaks of eight and 10 games. The Broncs’ lone regular season losses during that time were on the road and by three points each. One of the games was even an overtime loss.

Part of the reason for the Broncs’ success was defending home court, as the Broncs went 16-0 in Edinburg, including victories in the Pan American College Holiday Tournament over Emporia State, Illinois State and Louisiana Tech. It was one of just three times in program history that the Broncs went undefeated at home.

The Broncs averaged 90.4 points per game, the third highest total in program history, and UTPA Athletics Hall of Famers Otto Moore and Fred Taylor led that attack. Moore led the Broncs by averaging 24.6 points and 18.5 rebounds while shooting .510 from the field. Taylor averaged 21.4 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting .485 from the field.

It was the Broncs’ seventh postseason appearance in eight years, capping off the most successful stretch in program history.

The Father the Program

An inaugural member of the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, Sam Williams was also inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Known as the “Father of Broncs Basketball,” Williams served the University as an educator for more than three decades, and coached the Pan American College and Pan American University Broncs to 11 winning seasons, including four of at least 20 wins, in 15 years (1959-73). He remains the program’s all-time winningest coach with 244 victories.

Williams led Pan Am to its first and only national championship, winning the NAIA title in 1963. The very next season, he coached Pan Am right back to the championship game in what was their fourth-straight post-season appearance. Williams earned the NAIA National Coach of the Year award that year.

Williams oversaw the Pan Am's transition into an NCAA Division I program. In their final season before the move, the Broncs won 21 games and reached the 1968 NCAA Division II Southwest Regional, where they won their first round game. Shortly after the transition, Williams became a member of the NCAA Basketball Officials Committee.

Williams was a pioneer in collegiate athletics in the late 1950s, as he was one of the first coaches to integrate his basketball program.

One of the black players Williams recruited and coached was Athletics Hall of Famer Luke Jackson, a two-time All- American who was the MVP of the 1963 NAIA National Tournament and went on to play in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers for eight seasons (1964-72) while making the 1964-65 NBA All-Rookie Team and NBA All-Star Teams. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal.

Jackson was one of 10 players to be drafted by an NBA team while Williams was the head coach. Four of those 10 played in NBA regular season games, including Howard Montgomery (San Francisco Warriors, 1962-63), Otto Moore (Detroit Pistons, 1969-71 and 1974-75, Phoenix Suns, 1971-72, Houston Rockets, 1972-73, Kansas City Kings, 1973-74, New Orleans Jazz, 1975-77) and Fred Taylor (Suns, 1970-71 and Cincinnati Royals, 1971-72).

The Broncs rededicated the UTPA Fieldhouse center court in Williams' honor on Nov. 20, 2010. UTPA President Dr. Robert S. Nelsen also surprised Williams by naming him head coach emeritus. Several members of the 1962-63 Broncs then presented Williams with the original NAIA National Championship banner, which had been hanging in the UTPA Fieldhouse since it was built.

Williams is one of only two coaches in school history to earn emeritus status, with the other being baseball head coach emeritus and Athletics Hall of Famer Al Ogletree.

Williams passed away on Oct. 22, 2012 at the age of 88 due to natural causes. As part of the tribute to Williams, a plaque was hung in the UTRGV Fieldhouse to help keep the memory alive. GoUTRGV.com 16

Guy Bailey, Ph.D., was named Founding President of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in May of 2014.

Prior to being named President of UTRGV, he served as President of the University of Alabama and of Texas Tech University; Chancellor of the University of Missouri Kansas City; Provost and Executive Vice President at The University of Texas San Antonio; Dean of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; Chair of the English Department at Oklahoma State University and the University of Memphis; and as a faculty member at Texas A&M and Emory Universities.

During his time at Texas Tech, the university met the criteria established by the Texas State Legislature for participation in the National Research University Fund; enrollment grew by 3,905 students (14%); research expenditures grew by $89.9 million (170%); and graduation rates increase by five percentage points.

During his tenure at UTSA, the university was named an emerging research university by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; 16 new doctoral programs were added; external funding for research more than doubled; enrollment grew by more than 40%; and graduate enrollment grew by almost 50%.

While Bailey was at UMKC, the university completed a $200 million capital campaign and built or gained approval for $175 million in new construction. From 2010 to 2012, Bailey served on the Board of Directors of the NCAA and on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Big XII athletic conference. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of Midwest Research Institute since 2007.

Bailey continues to do research on language change and variation. His research with his late wife, Jan, has been featured in a front-page article in the New York Times, on National Public Radio, on CNN Headline News, on BBC Radio, in Texas Monthly, and in the San Antonio Express News. Since 1984, Bailey has brought in over $1 million in external funding for his research.
