Herpetofaunal communities of selected different habitats (closed forest, forest edge, home gardens, and cultivations) were assessed and distribution pat- terns were compared. A total of 24 amphibian species (63% endemic and 33% Threatened) and 53 reptile species (38% endemic and 30% Threatened) were recorded. Overall, 763 individual amphib- ians and 1032 individual reptiles were recorded in this forest area. Reptilian distribution patterns are similar to amphibian distribution patterns, with the highest diversity in the closed forest and the lowest diversity in cultivations. We did not observe an effect of forest edge (edge effect) in amphib- ian and reptile diversity, except for forest edge and cultivations for reptiles. Adverse human activi- ties such as improper agriculture practices, logging, and waste disposal have led to deforestation and habitat loss in KPFR. Key words. The elevation of the area ranges from 30-300 m and the ma- jority of its precipitation originates from the southwest monsoon (April to September) with a mean annual rain- fall of 4000-5000 mm. The KPFR is a catchment area for both Benthara and Kalu rivers. Average monthly tem- perature in the region is ~27.3 °C (Kekulandala 2002; Ranasinghe 1995). Closed forest is found deep in KPFR and on hill- tops (Fig. 6). The major vegetation formation of this habitat type can be classified as Doona-Dipterocarpus- Mesua series (Ranasinghe 1995). A certain degree of stratification can be identified in the forest, and although an emergent layer cannot be clearly identified, at some places the forest rises up to about 50-60 m in height and is primarily composed of Dipterocarpus sp., Shorea sp., and Doona sp. The canopy layer is composed of Aniso- phyllea cinnamomoides, Mesua sp., Vateria copallifera, and Mangifera zeylanica, that rise to about 30-40 m. The subcanopy is about 15-30 m high with the primary trees being Semecarpus sp., Garcinia sp. Calophyllum sp., and Horsfieldia iryaghedhi. The composition of the under- story is variable, but primarily this layer is comprised of Humboldtia laurifolia, Strobilanthes sp., Cyathea sp., saplings of Calamus sp., and Glochidion sp. The ground layer is mainly composed of species in the fam- ily Poaceae and Asteraceae, as well as ground orchids. This forest harbor a rich assemblage of climbing plants (e.g., Pothos sp., Entada pusaetha, and Calamus sp.) and epiphytes. Exotic species like Alstonia macrophylla are also found in the forest and the ground is covered with a thick and moist decomposing leaf matter layer. In particular, Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve (PBR) regions (Districts Hoshangabad, Betul and Chindwara) of MP comprises a vast range of reptiles, especially herpetofauna yet unexplored from the conservation point of view. Earlier inventory herpetofaunal study conducted in 2005 at MP and Chhattisgarh (CG) reported 6 snake families included 39 species. After this preliminary report, no literature existing regarding snake diversity of this region. This situation incited us to update the snake diversity of PBR regions. From 2010 to 2012, we conducted a detailed field study and recorded 31 species of 6 snake families (Boidae, Colubridae, Elapidae, Typhlopidea, Uropeltidae, and Viperidae) in Hoshanagbad District (Satpura Tiger Reserve) and PBR regions. Besides, we found the occurrence of Boiga forsteni and Coelognatus helena monticollaris (Colubridae), which was not previously reported in PBR region. Among the recorded, 9 species were Lower Risk – least concerned (LR-lc), 20 were of Lower Risk – near threatened (LR-nt), 1 is Endangered (EN) and 1 is vulnerable (VU) according to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status.

The new species possess unique morphological characters and are well distinguishable from one another that could be easily identified in the field. The conservation status of all species described here, have been considered Critically Endangered, except forP. newtonjayawardanei, as all the new species are recorded from single locations, and their habitats are under severe threat.

We constructed a species checklist for all herpetofauna of this area based on a short-term field survey, a comprehensive literature review, museum specimens, and observations made by field herpetologists. Based on 200 × 10 m belt transects, we surveyed herpetofauna both during day and night time, in 10 different types of habitats. The species checklist we compiled comprised 44 species of reptiles (including three nationally threatened, one globally threatened, and eight endemic species) and 15 species of amphibians (including one nationally threatened and three endemic species). Based on published literature, museum specimens, expert opinions, and current field survey, we documented 85 species of herpetofauna in this area. Of this entire list, we were unable to record the presence of 25 species through our field survey. Our field survey documented 18 species that were not previously reported from Jaffna Peninsula. Our study revealed that inland water bodies, cultivated lands, home gardens, and coastal beaches are of high impor- tance for native herpetofauna of Jaffna peninsula. Many human disturbances, such as habitat alterations, vengeful killing, consumption overexploitation, and road mortality are the key threats encountered by herpetofauna in Jaffna.

One population is distributed only in the wet zone forests (hereafter treated as wet zone population), while the other population occurs widely in the dry zone and intermediate zones (hereafter dry zone population). The type series of D. bifrenalis consist of 3 specimens from which the specimen representing the dry zone population was chosen as lectotype, and the wet zone population is described here as a new species.

Morankanda-Mukalana is a fragmented forest patch which is located in the Galle district, Southern wet zone of Sri Lanka. Biogeography of the Morankanda is noteworthy because it is located in the middle of the transition area of forest reserves or proposed forest reserves, which includes Beraliya Mukalana. This basic field survey was carried out upon the request made by Morakanda Estate management to define vertebrate checklist in the related area with the aim of starting analogue forestry as a future practice. During the study, a total of nine freshwater fish species were recorded (including four endemics), together with 14 species of amphibians (8 endemics), 43 reptile species (20 tetrapods and 23 serpentoids incl. 16 endemics), and 26 mammals (3 endemics). Avifauna comprised of 112 species (9 migrants) with 12 endemic birds (including proposed endemics). The high vertebrate faunal diversity revealed in this study paved the way for the estate management to change their plantation practice by maintaining partially analogue forestry following conservation practices which will positively affect to improve the status of wild fauna. During our two-year survey we recorded a total of 66 species of reptile (28 Lizards, 36 Snakes and 2 Tortoises), which represents 31.4 % of the total Sri Lankan reptile fauna. Thirty-five of the species are endemic to Sri Lanka. Of the recorded 66 species, 1 species is Critically Endangered, 3 are Endangered, 6 are Vulnerable, 14 are Near-threatened and 4 are Data-deficient. This important forest area is threatened by harmful anthropogenic activities such as illegal logging, use of chemicals and land-fill. Environmental conservationists are urged to focus attention on this Wet-zone forest. Key words: Endemics, species richness, threatened, ecology, conservation, wet-zone. Often only a core group of “well-known” reptile researchers were in communication. The rest of the biologists did their own research in isolation. This, of course, did lead to duplication of work, non-standard methodologies, ambiguity in knowledge, non-accessibility to exotic references, etc. The effects of this situation were obvious at the Conservation Assessment and Management Plan workshop (CAMP) for Reptiles in May 1997. At the workshop, albeit the exercise lead to the assessment of close to 500 taxa of Indian reptiles, a sense of unease was felt by the participants. Many isolated studies on reptiles could not be compared for want of comparable field methodologies, the veracity of the information provided was questioned of an unknown or nervous researcher and the ubiquitous feeling of “if we had all known each other better, we could have come up with more information” were reasons for the group recommending that a network of reptile researchers be formed immediately.
