METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com) Minister Revd. Steve Bennett As reported last month, our Chapel wasn’t open for Easter Sunday, but we were delighted to see the outside decorated with so many Spring flowers. A huge thank you to both Gill and Chris Poulter for making our church look so bright and alive on Easter Day. It was so very fitting and a joy to see. We are now planning to open for Pentecost, which this year falls on 23rd May. We will, of course, have carried out a deep clean and a risk assessment to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our congregation. Pentecost is seen by Christians as the birth of the Church and it would be a wonderful birthday celebration indeed to meet up together again after such a lengthy time away. Little by little, life is beginning to look a bit more “normal”, and if things go to plan, more restrictions could be lifted this month. We know we still have a way to go and need to be mindful of each other, but it has already been uplifting for so many to meet up with friends and family after a long time apart. From all of us here at Brent Knoll Methodist Church, we continue to hold you all in our prayers. And as more people are, once again, able to come and visit this beautiful part of the world, we pray too for their safety and wellbeing. And for a more optimistic and positive time ahead for all of us. God bless. Rosemary Krull Toddlers May is one of our favourite months. Now we can travel around a little more, we have been enjoying all sorts of different woodland walks, and we have made a list of things to look for including: a yellow flower - we found primroses, dandelions and celandines; a blue flower - we found bluebells and forget-me-nots; we looked for trees with blossom as well as stones, feathers, ladybirds and bees. Perhaps, when you next go for a walk, you could look for some of these too. We also went birdwatching, although it was quite hard trying to keep quiet so as not to frighten them. We saw robins, blackbirds, wrens and a seagull. Sometimes we take a picnic and have great fun making salads with pasta and our favourite cherry tomatoes. We love making sandwiches, especially ones filled with honey; they are easy to make, but very sticky for fur paws. You might like to help make a picnic with your family to enjoy outside when the sun is shining. We had a picnic on Berrow Beach, it was so good to see other families there and lots of children building amazing sandcastles. Birthdays this month: Daisy on 10th and Sally on 26th so a very “Happy Birthday” to you both. We miss our times together but we think of you and your families often. Take care and keep well. The Teddies (with no help) Sheila Janet Holness Sheila Janet Holness sadly passed away on Wednesday 10th March following a short illness. A family funeral was held in April. News from the Parish Council Virtual Meeting in April Planning Matters 07/20/00026: Development at Battleborough Grange. Response: The Parish Council objected to this application on the following grounds: a) The development would create a very poor visual impact on this area from all directions. b) The level of density and the layout are too high for this rural location, creating loss of light and reduced privacy. c) There are significant highway concerns on a road system already under strain which would be caused by significant increase in volumes of traffic and greater movements of vehicles. This will, of course, lead to highway safety issues. d) Environmental concerns due to the rural nature of the location. e) The visual impairment of such a development towards an historic location would be unacceptable. f) There are also shared access issues and rights of way concerns together with local farming considerations. g) Provision for parking and turning of vehicles is not adequately provided for. h) A huge increase in noise levels that would emanate from this substantial development would create disturbance. 07/21/00002: Change of use from Pre School (use Class E (f) to a residential dwelling (Use Class C3) at 50, Brent Street, Brent Knoll. Response: The Parish Council supported this application on the following grounds: a) The Business associated with this property has now been relocated to the School and therefore there is no business activity conducted at this property. b) The property was previously a class 3 residential home and is now wishing to be reinstated to its former use. c) The new location to which this business has been transferred, is significantly more suitable and with safer access to the highway. 07/21/00003: Reduce height and spread of Willow Tree (TPO ref T2) by 3m to previous pruning points at Applecross, Station Road, Brent Knoll. Response: The Parish Council supported this application on the grounds of good arboreal practice providing it is compliant with the Tree Preservation Order Regulations 1969. Decisions were taken on the following Matters The Accounts and Audit compliance matters were all approved for the end of year 2020/21. Updates were provided on the following ongoing matters Community Shop: Continuing discussions between Council and Steering group. 20mph outside of School: Ongoing with highways Weight Limits within the Village: Ongoing with highways Defibrillator Installation: Waiting for outcome on telephone kiosk placement. Bishop’s letter - Called to serve and care. There are many things I shall miss when I retire. One is writing these brief articles for parish magazines. After some 41 years of writing articles and editorials, you might think I would be pleased to stop. However, over the years, this is one way I have been able to keep in touch with people and offer encouragement and support to all that is happening in the life of our churches and communities. In the ordination service for bishops, the liturgy begins with the words: ‘Bishops are called to serve and care for the flock of Christ. Mindful of the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for the sheep, they are to love and pray for those committed to their charge, knowing their people, and being known by them.’ These monthly articles are one way in which I seek to ‘be known’ across the diocese. As I prepare to retire, I want to express my huge appreciation for the welcome I have received in all the parishes and places that I have visited. It has been an enormous privilege to join the churches of the diocese to see what you are doing, to preach and to share in your worship. I am conscious that, despite getting out and about across the whole diocese, there are still some churches which I have not visited, and I am sorry about that. Reading the ordination service, I see that, as disciples, we are all called to ‘witness to the resurrection and to preach the good news of salvation in all the world.’ That is a calling and a privilege which will not stop as I lay down the See of Bath and Wells. It is at the heart of what it is to be part of the Body of Christ. So, as I say my farewells, I send you my blessing. Please know that my prayers will continue to be with you. Yours with the love of Christ, Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society is continuing with their weekly choir sessions via zoom from the 8th April 2021 at 7.30pm, for one hour, and they will continue until the 17th June. Costing £30 (or £2.50 a session), these are fun events, and are still with our professional Musical Director and live accompanist. In eager anticipation of all lockdown restraints disappearing on the 21st June, we plan to have our Social on Thursday the 24th June 2021. This may be a little premature, but at least we can hope to get together again, have a bit of communal singing and some fun! Our AGM. is now scheduled for the 15th July. Our Winter term will start on 2nd September 2021 with a Christmas concert planned for Thursday 16th December 2021. We will restart again in 2022 on the 6th January. These plans may seem premature under the current circumstances, but we must remain positive. The choir hasn’t met since the 12th March 2020! So, let’s stay positive and look forward to meeting again. In the meantime, please do enjoy the weekly zoom sessions; We know not everybody likes just singing alone, but it is a chance to meet other choir members and allows us to sing all the parts without other people hearing our mistakes! If you would like to join us on Thursday evenings, you would be most welcome. You can get further details from our secretary at [email protected] or on 01278 783511. Julie Skinner

Chairman’s Report April 2021, Brent Knoll Parish Council We are now half way through our elected four year term as councillors of Brent Knoll Parish Council. I firstly must acknowledge the work of our Clerk ,Owen Cullwick, and thank him, on behalf of all councillors, for his support and professional manner that he continuously provides to the council. The last two years have seen the completion of the development at 2, Brent Street and the commencement of the development at Station Road. It is pleasing to see that young families, who either work in the village, or who have family ties within the village, have taken advantage of these new properties. Notwithstanding that, we are a small village, your councillors are constantly seeking to manage the assets of the village, these include footpaths and enhancements, roads, hedges, landscaping, the village green (new perimeter fencing), St Michael’s Church grounds and communal areas. I must thank the Nuttall Trust which has provided grants, over the last two years, so that we can update our picnic benches with more sustainable furniture. It is pleasing to note the popularity of our play area with young children and their families. The difficult past year has seen a major change in the way we hold our council meetings. I am pleased to report that all councillors have taken an active role in participating in virtual meetings by way of “zoom” video conferencing. This has enabled us to ensure planning applications are dealt with in time and all councillors are kept up to date with current matters. We have carried out improvements to the village website and increased our level of communication, in particular through “NextDoor” and www.Burnham-on- Sea.com. All our meetings can now be viewed “on line”: please refer to www.brentknollvillage.co.uk and select “Council”. This is a good opportunity for all residents to see their councillors in action. We hope to return to our normal “face to face” meetings mid-June 2021 and, soon after, the reinstatement of parish surgeries. Our use of working groups to develop projects is proving to be the most efficient way of carrying out our work. Ongoing projects include the purchase of a new speed indicator device, which we hope will soon be operational. The new unit will be capable of providing accurate data of traffic speeds to enable your council to report directly to the Sedgemoor North West Beat Team. Most important is the future support for the Brent Knoll Community Shop. The working group of the council is in active consultation with the Shop steering committee. Formal presentations, by both parties, will be made to the full council in May. Being a Parish Councillor provides an opportunity for anyone to become involved in their community and provides a platform to make a difference. To all those who would like to consider standing for election in two years, now is the time to get involved and find out more. You can find contact details in the Brent Knoll News or online at the village website. Alternatively, please contact any of our councillors or our clerk directly. Colin Townsend Somerset Day Tuesday, May 11th, is Somerset Day and we are being encouraged to fly the Somerset flag (yellow with a red dragon, in case you didn’t know) and also decorate our houses with yellow bunting. If you would like to get involved, ring Jackie Gilbert on 760 956 and she will email you details of how to make or buy the flag and bunting. Jackie Gilbert Editor’s note – There is a bit of a debate about whether it’s a Dragon or a Wyvern! Bob

Secret World News - Baby boom! Well, one minute you’re looking forward to the orphan season, and then the babies arrive! With 22 fox cubs, 5 badger cubs, a leveret, baby bunnies and a weasel – all needing intensive care because they are so young – we are all looking a bit tired! It is exciting to see our new treatment centre taking shape. We have almost raised what we need to complete the building. If we manage to do that, then we shall be going through the new front door in October. Until then, we are having to make do and manage using rooms back in the farmhouse as we are now moving out of the reception barn that was sold last year. People coming with casualties will have to follow signs as to where to go, as there will be a temporary reception unit with a bell to ring for someone to come and assist. We apologise for the disruption, but it will all be worthwhile. We are not able to have any open days this year with so much work going on, but are doing fundraising auctions and talks, so do look at our web site to see what is going on. We have had some exciting rescues in the past month with managing to catch a badger in Bristol Harbour during the middle of the night. The poor animal had been in the water for 2 hours by the time we got there. We managed to catch her with a grasper and, after a few days rest, she was able to go home. Thanks must go to the and Somerset Fire Service for the assistance given us in the operation at the disused railway water tower reservoir at Firepool. A mallard duck had taken her ducklings in to this reservoir with steep sides that made it impossible for them to get out. The firemen managed to save all the ducklings, but the ‘mum’ flew off, so they are here with us being reared. Two very dedicated rescuers had been trying to catch a young fox with netting caught around its neck since November last year. She evaded all their efforts and there was a great concern that the netting would grow into her skin. Finally, having tried traps, a netting gun and many other methods, she was caught by enticing her with food on to a large net that was eventually pulled up around her. We were so pleased to see that her wounds are viable, and she is under medical treatment with us. Hopefully, she will be going home in about a month. So, work continues at Secret World Wildlife Rescue despite the many changes. If you would like to be part of our team as a volunteer, please let us know. For information and advice, the number is 01278 783250. WI Craft Group Although we are unable to meet, our members and others continue to knit hats and scarves for Seafarers, as well as blankets for both premature babies and adults with dementia, for which they, and us, are grateful. We look forward to meeting again sometime this year, and not only show or explain what crafting we’ve done, but also explain how it’s helped us to keep busy during this strange time. We are also working on ideas for the arts and crafts event at St. Michael’s church next year. If anyone is having itchy fingers and would like to knit for a worthwhile cause, please contact me and I should be able to help with patterns, wool et etc. Margaret Smith 01278 760691 Pastoral Care Groups Although the groups can’t meet physically, we’ve been keeping an eye on our members through phone calls, emails etc. The Alzheimer and Dementia Carer group has been meeting monthly on a Monday afternoon through Zoom. If anyone is interested in joining them, please phone Carla Searle on 01278 760 041 or email [email protected]. Mrs Kim Wilcox the village agent, also attends the meetings. The Parish of Three Saints Pastoral Care team has also been busy keeping an eye on people in the community. Parents of those recently baptised in our parish, have also been emailed to say that we are thinking of them, and given links to online services, contact details etc. If there is anyone who would value a chat, please contact Anthony on 07701 081 077 or email [email protected]. Margaret Smith, 01278 760691 Now where did that come from To turn the corner: Once we have overcome a personal disaster or illness or struggled with a business venture and things seem to be improving, it’s said “we have turned a corner”. This expression originated from naval crews in sailing ships. For at sea there are two notorious corners, the first is the tip of Africa, “The Cape of Good Hope” where the two Oceans meet, the Atlantic and Indian. The second is the tip of South America “Cape Horn”, where the Pacific and Atlantic meet. Both “Horns” are notoriously rough and dangerous for sailors, so when each of the Horns have been turned and calmer waters reached, crews of vessels, now in calmer waters, would say “They had turned the corner” and safer waters lay ahead. News from Brent Knoll Community Shop Somerset’s “Covid Emergency Shop” continues to thrive Community Shop appoints a paid manager and secures a drinks licence. A Somerset village community shop, which opened within ten days of the first Covid lockdown, has gone from strength to strength. Having traded profitably from day one, Brent Knoll’s volunteer-run shop has now appointed its first paid employee and secured a license to sell alcohol. Having advertised the post of part-time manager in local news media and social media, the group has appointed Jamie Scanlon, their Volunteer Co-Ordinator. Jamie will ensure the shop’s compliance with all regulations and oversee the training and allocation of volunteers. This will include training the shop’s volunteers on the rules for selling alcohol, now that the Brent Knoll Community Shop has been awarded a license by Sedgemoor District Council. Customers will be asked to say what alcoholic products they want the shop to stock. Meanwhile, the owner of the shop premises has sold both her home and the shop, but the new owner has confirmed that the Community Shop can continue to operate there for the coming year, while they work with Brent Knoll Parish Council to finalise a permanent future location in the village. “We are delighted with the progress that we have made since opening our ‘Emergency Shop’ at the outset of the first lockdown”, said Dr Niall Moore, Chairman of the Brent Knoll Community Shop Steering Group. “We are also hugely grateful to the shop-owner for all the support she has provided over the past year, and for the new owner’s willingness for us to remain there while we resolve our future location with our Parish Council”, he added. “We are now working closely with our Parish Council to determine our future permanent location”, said Dr Moore. Friends of St Michael’s Church News A big thankyou to all who took part in Easter celebrations. It was good to see the Bible Trail and Easter Gardens around our churchyard. Rosemary did a fantastic job sprucing up our stock of Easter Eggs. Notable additions since their last outing were Upsy Daisy and two from Brent Knoll School – Peppa Pig and Peter Rabbit. Thank you to those who used the trail sheets, which raised £60, pretty good for an event that was not supposed to be a fundraiser. Our efforts at fundraising for 2021 are only just beginning. As we have mentioned before, we lost out on around £4000 worth of fundraising in 2020 and early 2021 and we are now realising that redecoration work in St Michael’s is going to be more expensive than we first thought. It may sound a bit like a stuck gramophone record, but we must raise funds just to keep up the good work that we started in 2020 with the North aisle roof work. The theme for 2021 will be Bridge that Gap and we need to raise at least £8,000 to cover our costs. So how can you help? Saturday May 1st 10am to 12.30pm – Plant Sale on the Mary Frost patio outside the Jubilee Room - A stall will be set up and we shall be selling divisions of perennial plants, vegetable plants e.g., runner beans, courgettes etc, and young tender flowers. This will be Covid restricted (social distancing will be required when buying plants). Technology permitting, we intend to allow direct internet payments, so bring your smart phones. If not, bring exact amounts of cash so that we handle as little money as possible. Sunday May 23rd – Sponsored Rogationtide walk - Our event will be limited to a sponsored walk that starts at the church, involves a climb of the Knoll and then around a circuit that takes in the Levels and returns to finish at the church. There will be two groups of walkers. One will be for family groups led by Rosemary, and the other for adults led by Ged. Precise timing and the walk route itself can be found on our website at St Michaels Church Brent Knoll | Rogationtide Walk Sunday May 23rd Sponsoring those who take part in the walk, or simply sponsoring the event itself, will help us raise funds to Bridge that Gap. Sunday July 4th – Open Churchyard and Gardens – If all goes to plan, we should be free of Covid restrictions by this time. Our event will be focused on the Churchyard, where there will be refreshments and a churchyard trail. The Open Gardens will be stretch from Ball Copse Hall and along Brent Street in both directions. The Open Churchyard aspect of the event, will concentrate on how churchyards can help us promote nature conservation. A Letter from the Rector of The Parish of Three Saints Dear Friends, I’ve been reflecting with the church family, in these weeks after Easter, about the period after the nightmare of Jesus’ crucifixion and then startling resurrection when the disciples effectively did nothing for a while and then, as they met the risen Jesus, their relationship was renewed. It also reminded me of the story earlier in Jesus’ life when he calmed a violent, life-threatening storm. You can find it in your bible at Matthew 8:23-27 and also in Mark and Luke. I’ve noticed how, before the storm, life had been frantic. After the storm, there was a dead calm, and the disciples sat quietly with Jesus for a moment, before going back to the shore and resuming their busy lives in a fresh way. The nature of their relationship with him had changed, as they saw him in a new light for what he was – the Son of the Creator God. We have been through a storm, and it’s not quite over yet. Some people are eager to “get back to normal” and, as each step of the roadmap unfolds, it seems to me there is a rush to meet up, go shopping and resume life just as it was. But I feel we need to be a little more circumspect and take this opportunity to pause, sit with Jesus and see what unfolds for us in a new world. We cannot fail to be changed by this experience, or we have learnt nothing. Our relationships, and interactions with friends and strangers alike, will be different. Traditional practices and habits have sometimes stifled creativity, so this is a chance to think. Maybe there are things that are now better left behind, and, as we re-start, perhaps we should consider if what we did before is right for these post-Covid times. They may be ways of doing things better. There will of course, be practices we really miss, and people also need time to lament that these have gone forever. This lamentation requires time and space; it is grief. I would commend to you being very gentle with yourself and others for several months as social life restarts. Spend time, if you say you are a Christian, to reflect on your relationship with Jesus. Perhaps, as with the disciples, life had become too busy for your daily prayer life, and bible reading, going to church for fellowship, and growing your spiritual life. Stop, sit quietly in the boat with Jesus for a while, and renew your relationship with him. Further reading: “Do Nothing to Change Your Life” Stephen Cottrell (Archbishop of York) from Church House Publishing. Bless you all,

Revd Kevin Wright, Rector, The Parish of Three Saints The Glebe Land, Brent Knoll I do not know who purchased the land, or if the Parish Council would be interested in this idea. I have thought for a long time that it would be very beneficial to the village, to have a short cut from the bottom of the green up to Church Lane. I now wonder if the new owner of the Glebe Land might consider selling a small strip as the aforesaid “footpath”. Sally Wingate

St Michael’s Church Clock You may have noticed the dilapidated state of our church clock. Well, this is about to change! The skeleton dial and hands will be removed in May for refurbishment by the Cumbria Clock Company, which also repaired Westminster clock, known as Big Ben. Two octogenarians in our village, decided to fund the costs involved, so that they could see it restored to its former glory in their lifetimes. They were assisted by a grant from St. Andrew’s Conservation Trust and the work has now been approved by our Parochial Church Council. A faculty had also to be obtained from the Registrar of the Bath and Wells Diocese. The two funders decided to have the numerals, minute marks and hands in gold as they were when the clock was first commissioned. Also, to introduce a black backing plate which would make the gold stand out better than against the stone background. It would then be similar to the church clocks at St Mary’s East Brent, St Mark’s Mark and St Andrew’s Burnham-on-Sea. Removing the dial and hands is not easy and the Clock Company decided to remove it by abseiling down, by ropes, from the church tower, which should be quite spectacular to witness! The refurbished, clock is expected to be reinstalled about 10 weeks after removal. Anon

This month’s postcard is of Sunny Lawn, as it says on the bottom, but where is Sunny Lawn? It changed its name sometime around 1927 and I will reveal its current name next month. Although some of the postcards I will use cannot be dated accurately, this one does have a stamp on the rear which states that it was posted at 8:15 on the 6th July 1901. It was addressed to Miss Body, who is then noted in the text as Jess. In 1889 the owner, Alworth Merewether Bayliffe, was leaving the neighbourhood due to ill health and aimed to sell both the property and a considerable amount of the items in the grounds around the house and within the property itself. Amongst these were the following: a capital landau (by Rogers) with self-acting head, has only been used a few times; bay carriage horse, about 16 hands, 3 years old, sound and reliable; donkey, quiet and used to children; various horse equipment, including a harness and a second-best harness; an American sleigh; double swing; frames, seats, rabbit hutches, fowls, etc. Also, a number of lots of surplus furniture, amongst which was some bedroom furniture; a paraffin stove; fire screens; 3 large filters (by the best makers); 3 bird cages; six mahogany hair-seated chairs; several duplex lamps with extinguishers; several pictures; about 300 popular novels in convenient lots; other works by good authors. The particulars of the house sale do note that the greater part of the house has been recently rebuilt and is in thorough repair and, of course, it is delightfully situated in the picturesque village of Brent Knoll. Nature diary for May This month, the diary is about two very different experiences linked by an open window. The first was brought about by locking myself out of the house. I realised I had done it when I found I had the wrong key, and couldn’t get back into the house. Fortunately, there was a window open, so I picked up our ladder from the church and took it home to do a “break in”, when Rosemary came home. The sun was out, so why not spend some time looking at nature in the churchyard… I sat down on the church wall and spent a leisurely half hour looking at nature. From where I was sitting I started by counting the wild flowers in bloom. Pretty soon I reached double figures. Primroses, celandines, dandelions and daisies were easy starters. To these, one could add three species of annual speedwell and a red deadnettle. Halfway down the bank, I could see a single bluebell, most out of place in dry open grassland. Finally, there was a forget-me-not. Was this wild or a garden escape, no matter. What insects were there in this warm microclimate? Flies, hoverflies and bumblebees were busying themselves, and then I spotted a small spider scurrying about. The prize “spot” was a beefly, with its long proboscis buried in a primrose bloom, a good snap for the nature photo album. This was a really relaxed and relaxing experience, just what the doctor ordered. The next natural experience was rather different... We were going to bed the following night and we heard a scratching sound in a wardrobe. Could it be a mouse? No, the noise was too loud, and it was too high in the wardrobe. Then Rosemary exclaimed – it’s a bat! I went downstairs to find some gloves (never handle bats because they occasionally harbour rabies). The first attempt at capture sent the bat to the floor and it crept under the bed. After moving the bed, I caught it and dispatched it out of the bedroom window. This was a large bat, a serotine, that must have come through the open window the day before and spent a day in the wardrobe. Each year, female serotines set up a nursery in the cavities of the houses in the Willows. They mate in the Autumn and store the sperm over the Winter becoming pregnant in early Spring. Their young are born and spend the Summer with their mothers in their nursery, which usually contains around seventy bats, in July/August. In late September, they leave to hibernate for the Winter. Where they hibernate is a mystery. For those interested in seeing these serotine bats, and other species of bats that roost and fly around the church, we hope to organise a bat walk to be run by the Somerset Bat Group in early September. Brent noll Weather Report – March 2021 March is often a changeable and unsettled month, as the days grow longer and the sunshine gains in strength. This year was no exception, with high and low pressure systems alternately dominating the weather. The result was a month of contrasts, with sharp frosts at the beginning and unusually high temperatures at the end, some days of sunshine and a gale halfway through. The missing element was rainfall – March was on the dry side, but not exceptionally so. We began with the remnants of the high pressure, which brought February to a close with a day of unbroken sunshine. The first few days of March weren’t quite blessed with wall-to-wall sun, but once the morning mist and cloud had burned off, we had some decent afternoon sunshine, marred only by a cold north-easterly breeze – something which was to become a recurring theme. Cloud returned in the evenings, and was enough to keep the frost off. The high pressure moved off east on the 3rd, allowing a small low to run up the English Channel bringing the first rain of the month; but already another high was moving south east from Iceland, to cover the whole of the UK by the 5th. This brought more bright and sunny weather, but still with that cold north-easterly, and this time, clear skies overnight resulted in sharp frosts – a minimum of -4.5C early on the 7th was unusually chilly for March. By the 9th, the high pressure had drifted off to the Azores, allowing Atlantic lows to take over. The breeze switched to a milder south-westerly, and the 10th was the wettest day of the month, thanks to a low passing north of Scotland. The fronts associated with this low arrived in the small hours, and generated 10 hours of more or less continuous rain; it was never heavy, but it was persistent, and amounted to 13.0mm by lunchtime. The procession of lows continued until the middle of March. Although the south- westerly breeze was mild, it originated as polar air, which had been warmed as it crossed the Atlantic. This meant it was unstable, resulting in squally showers, occasionally with hail, and gusty winds. A maximum of 43.4kts was recorded early on the 13th. High pressure moved north from the mid-Atlantic on the 15th, and by the 16th, a large high was established west of Ireland, blocking the progress of the Atlantic lows. Over the following week, it moved east over the UK to bring a return to bright and dry weather, but with a layer of cloud, meaning the sunshine was at best hazy. Once again, a chilly north-easterly breeze took the edge off temperatures, but it was the second dry spell of the month. Atlantic lows returned on the 25th for another brief spell of short, sharp showers, but March had one more trick up its sleeve. An area of low pressure to the west of the Bay of Biscay, combined with high pressure over Europe to draw very warm air (and some Saharan dust) up from the Mediterranean, resulting in a temperature of 22.0C on the afternoon of the 30th - some parts of the country recorded 24C. We have to go back a few decades to see a similar figure in March. It was a fitting end to a month with plenty of variety but, at 37.8mm, not a lot of rain. Stephen Baggs; www.knollweather.co.uk
