Saturday 15th February Sussex Day Walk

Organiser: Martin Wheatley email: [email protected] Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd February Map Ref: W 3.21222544 SO 169 395 Black Mountains and the Forest of Dean N 52.04817012 HR3 5LP

Weekend Trip Based at Glasbury on Wye, we will walk in the Black Mountains on Saturday and the Forest of Dean on Sunday to get the most variety from this weekend. The Black Mountains attract very few visitors compared to the better known Brecon Beacons, but still offer a great days walking at around 2,000 ft AOD. Take on the challenge of Lord Hereford’s Knob and adjacent ridges, where with good visibility we will have impressive views into & Wales. On Sunday, we will walk in the Forest of Dean, looking out for the wild boar with which this area is famous. This also affords a quicker journey back home for many.

We’ll be staying at Woodlands Bunkhouse, located about 5 miles SW of Hay on Wye. A converted late Regency stables building, it is set in 10 acres of grounds overlooking the River Wye and offers comfortable accommodation for 18-20 persons. There is a social area and a well-equipped kitchen for our meals.

On Saturday the mountain routes are whether dependent, but there will still be two walking options. On Sunday there will be one route due to the short day length at this time of year. This weekend will not include any climbing or scrambling type activities.

Accommodation: Woodlands Bunkhouse

Cost (approx): £80 to include shared transport, accommodation, 2 breakfasts 2 evening meals. Independent travellers - £60

Deposit: £40 to Organiser by 20th December 2019 please.

Weekend Trip Derbyshire Peak District

Come & join us in the heart of the Peak District you’ll be in perfect walking territory the fluffy moorland and jagged gritstone of Dark Peak on Kinder Scout where our forefathers established the right to roam the countryside back in 1932. Offering a variety of walking distances but based around the Kinder scout plateau on one day & the popular Mam Tor's great ridge, a shorter route near Castleton on the last day before returning home.

Staying in the comfortable & well equipped Dale Head National Trust Bunkhouse its isolated location, deep in the Edale Valley, means there are no public roads leading to it. A single, narrow track will guide you to this rural hideaway, where you’ll be surrounded only by working farmland, grazing sheep and a tumbling stream at the bottom of the garden. Inside offers plenty of space to relax among its rustic exposed beams and low doorways. You’ll have three bedrooms to divide into and a communal living and dining area with sofas and a cosy log burner to huddle around. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays/dalehead-bunkhouse-derbyshire

Planning Meeting Time for the Annual Club Planning Meeting!

24 Rosebery Avenue, Goring-By-Sea, BN12 4U

The meeting will start at 7pm, with refreshments from 6:30pm.

This is really important evening for the Club, as not only do we get to plan all the fabulous things we are going to do next year, but we also get to enjoy some cracking cheese and wine with fresh French bread...

Whether you’ve been on lots of club trips or if this is only your first year, you’ll be made very welcome. Please let me know if you’re hoping to come, so I can organise enough seating and try and buy enough cheese (and wine). We had a fantastic turn out last year and had a very pleasant evening in my garden.

Even if you’re unable to make it, all contributions, suggestions or offers to assist on a trip will be appreciated.

See you then.

Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th September Map Ref: W 1.701599 SU 209 423, Great Stones Way N 51.180234 SP4 0EW

Weekend Trip The Great Stones Way (from Barbary, Castle Wiltshire to Old Sarum, Salisbury)

A linear walk of approximately 44 miles over 4 days, passing by many ancient stone monuments including Avebury Stone circle and Stonehenge itself.

A new venture for the Club, we plan to self-guide our group through the prehistoric landscape passing Neolithic henges and stone circles, bronze age barrows and iron age hill forts, crossing the Wiltshire chalk Downs with far-reaching views, tranquil river scenes and picturesque villages.

We will have to leave Sussex early on the Thursday morning to arrive and walk the first day’s mileage before having supper at the YHA.

The walk will be supported by volunteer drivers (fellow HHMC members) as we will be staying centrally at Cholderton YHA, and being dropped and collected at the beginning and end of each days walk. The walks are planned as follows:

Day 1 Barbery Castle to Overton Hill – 8.75 miles Day 2 Overton Hill to Upavon – 13 miles Day 3 Upavon to Great Durnford – 16.5 miles Day 4 Great Durnford to Old Sarum – 4.25 miles.

There may be the option to shorten a day’s walk by negotiating with our wonderful volunteer drivers! Cholderton YHA has 9 places available in two rooms, one of 3 and one of 6 both en-suite. There is a self- catering kitchen but we have costed based on meals provided by the YHA.

Accommodation: Cholderton HA Cost (approx): £160 to include shared transport, accommodation, 3 breakfasts 3 evening meals (at YHA) Independent travellers - £135 (includes transfers by our volunteers on walking days) Deposit: £80 to Organiser by date please. Email: [email protected]

Because of booking conditions at a YHA I’d appreciate expressions of interest as soon as possible, preferably by the end of November, with a closing date for deposits of the end of January 2020.
