    【Report】 107 Operational Efficiency, Economic Performance and Social Significance of GALASA Style Rice Production in Indian Agriculture Babu Chittilappilly Varkey＊ and Yoshihito Itohara＊＊ ＊United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Tottori University ＊＊Faculty of Agriculture, Yamaguchi University E-mail: babinold＠hotmail.com & gbb５０＠po.cc.yamaguchi-u.ac.jp Abstract Galasa is the abbreviation for“Group Approach for Locally Adapted and Sustainable Agriculture”. The present study is aimed at establishing the viewpoint that the Galasa of rice farmers in the Kerala state of India is an operationally efficient, economically productive and socially beneficial agricultural production practice. The field survey covered１２０farmers, who were operating in the Galasa rice fields and adjacent locations in the Palakkad District of Kerala state. Applying the Data Envelopment Analysis （DEA）, a non-parametric frontier tool, the study proved that Galasa is an efficient agricultural produc- tion practice in terms of all efficiency measurements such as technical, scale, cost and allocative effi- ciencies. Boosting the rice yield from ３，２８７ kg／ha to ６，４４９ kg／ha and ensuring four times improve- ment in the profit, Galasa helps sustaining rice production in the state where foodgrain deficiency rose up to８０％ of the total demand. On achieving the full-scale yield potential, Galasa can promote Kerala’s self-sufficiency on foodgrains by reducing the deficiency level to ４９％. Galasa, which insists organic farming and encourages the preservation of the remaining３１０，５２１hectares of area under rice, can con- tribute significantly to the environmental sustainability. By preventing the fast disappearance of rice fields, Galasa can also absorb ９．４９％ of the total agricultural labourers in Kerala.

  • Kochouseph Chittilappilly
    KOCHOUSEPH CHITTILAPPILLY Kochouseph Chittilappilly is an Indian businessman best known as the founder and Chairman of V-Guard Industries Ltd and a chain of amusement parks called Wonderla. Kochouseph Chittilappilly was born in Parappur, a few kilometers from Trichur town, a quiet, laid back village. The very name of the village suggests its nature- 'where birds abide'. He did his schooling at the parish school in Parappur in Thrissur and attended Christ College, Irinjalakuda. He was awarded a Masters degree in Physics from St. Thomas College, Thrissur in 1970. He started his career as a supervisor in an electronics company, Telics, and later founder V Guard Industries Ltd in 1977. Sensing a need in the market for voltage stabilizers, he set up a small manufacturing unit in Thrissur, with a borrowed capital of Rs 1, 00,000 and 2 workers for assistance. Capturing the market in a short span of time, he then diversified the product range of the company to include Pumps & Motors, Electric Water Heaters, Solar Water Heaters, Wiring Cables, UPS, and Ceiling Fans. Further diversifying his business ventures, in 2000 he launched Veegaland, a one of its kind amusement and water theme park in Cochin, Kerala. Having set the company on wheels he toyed with the idea of diversification and a completely new course- a water theme park. He had travelled extensively to Europe and America and assessed the potential. The thought of replicating it in Cochin where the terrain was ideal and water was plentiful was exciting. Delivering on the quality of the rides, meeting international safety standards were all a daunting task but he decided to take it on with a firm belief that with perseverance, optimism and a positive attitude all things were possible.

The rich tradition that she is proud of is to a great extent the product of the dedicated service of the staff of this institution. But every year she is a sad witness to the retirement of her worthy staff who have been a part and parcel of this College for many years. This year we are bidding farewell to our beloved Vice- Principal Sr. Mareena, Department of Chemistry, who has proved that academic and administrative capacities need not be formal and official but can be more productive through personal interaction.
