Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 251-266 The Oceanographic Achievements of Vito Volterra in Italy and Abroad1 By Sandra Linguerri The aim of this paper is to introduce Vito Volterra’s activity as a policy maker in the field of oceanography. In 1908, he was the promoter of the Thalassographic Committee (then in 1910 Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee), a national endeavor for marine research vis-à-vis the industrial world of fisheries, which soon internationalized. Abroad it was affiliated with the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, led by Albert I, Prince of Monaco (1919-1922) and then by Vito Volterra himself (1923-1928).1 Keywords: History, International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, Oceanography, Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee, Vito Volterra. Vito Volterra and the Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee Vito Volterra (1860-1940) (Goodstein 2007, Guerraggio and Paoloni 2013, Simili and Paoloni 2008) is generally considered one of the greatest mathematicians of his time. His most important contributions were in functional analysis, mathematical ph‟ scientific activities, rather it will focus on his contribution to talassographic (or oceanographic) studies, and especially on the creation of the Royal Italian Talassographic Committee (Linguerri 2005, Ead 2014). European Teams in Mathematical Biology
European teams in mathematical biology In this issue we begin the presentation of some of the European groups working in the field of mathematical biology. Centre for Mathematical Medicine and Biology, Nottingham The Centre is based within the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham, UK. We aim to promote the application of mathematical modelling and statistics to medicine and the biomedical sciences, and to stimulate multi-disciplinary research within the University and beyond. Core members include Markus Owen (Director), Daniele Avitabile, Leah Band, Bindi Brook, Stephen Coombes, Ian Dryden, Etienne Farcot, Matthew Hubbard, John King, Theodore Kypraios, Reuben O'Dea, Philip O'Neill, Rüdiger Thul, Jonathan Wattis and Andrew Wood (full list at: www.nottingham.ac.uk/cmmb/people). Several members of the CMMB are also affiliated with our close partner, the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB, www.cpib.ac.uk). Our research interests span a wide range of applications including Neural engineering, Synthetic biology (including Biofuels), Biomechanics, Computational toxicology, Drug delivery, Metabolic modeling, Quantitative systems pharmacology, Plant biology and Signal transduction. Many of these applications have important interdisciplinary and industrial impact, resulting in wide collaborative research activity. The nature of these applications often leads to highly nonlinear, complex and multiscale models, necessitating the development and use of a wide variety of mathematical and computational tools within the group. For example, we exploit techniques from scientific computation, statistics, stochastic modelling, multiscale asymptotics, inference and analysis for complex networks, statistical physics and continuum mechanics. Important recent developments include an emphasis on stimulating cross-disciplinary research in Anti-microbial resistance (www.nottingham.ac.uk/bridging), Food security (in partnership with CPIB) and Resource sustainability (including a Leverhulme Trust doctoral training centre: tinyurl.com/UoN- MASS). -

Vito Volterra and his commemoration for the centenary of Faraday’s discovery of electromagnetic induction Amelia Carolina Sparavigna Politecnico di Torino Abstract: The paper presents a memoir of 1931 written by Vito Volterra on the Italian physicists of the nineteenth century and the researches these scientists made after the discoveries of Michael Faraday on electromagnetism. Here, the memoir entitled “I fisici italiani e le ricerche di Faraday” is translated from Italian. It was written to commemorate the centenary of Faraday’s discovery of the electromagnetic induction. Besides being a remarkable article on the history of science, it was also, in a certain extent, a political paper. In fact, in 1931, the same year of the publication of this article, Mussolini imposed a mandatory oath of loyalty to Italian academies. Volterra was one of the very few professors who refused to take this oath of loyalty. Because of the political situation in Italy, Volterra wanted to end his paper sending a message to the scientists of the world, telling that the feeling of admiration and gratitude that in Italy the scientists had towards “the great thinker and British experimentalist” was profound and unanimous. Lo scorso 1° giugno è morto a Roma il matematico Gaetano Fichera, professore decano dell'Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, accademico Linceo e uno dei XL dell'Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze. Nato ad Arcireale, in provincia di Catania, l'8 febbraio 1922, presso l'Università di Catania iniziò giovanissimo, nel 1937, i suoi studi universitari, che continuò poi presso l'Università di Roma, dove si laureò brillantemente in matematica nel 1941. Questi anni di formazione furono guidati dal padre, Giovanni, professore di matematica e fisica nelle scuole medie superiori. Appena laureato, poiché molti giovani assistenti di matematica erano sotto le armi, fu nominato assistente incaricato presso la cattedra di Mauro Picone; ma subito dopo dovette ritornare a Catania per curare una grave malattia. Nel 1942 si arruolò anch'egli, e le vicende della guerra lo tennero lontano fino alla primavera del 1945. Ottenuta la libera docenza nel 1948, fra il 1949 e il 1956 fu professore all'Università di Trieste. A Trieste era nata la futura moglie Matelda Colautti, che egli sposò nel 1952. Nel 1956 si trasferì all'Università di Roma, dove ricoprì dapprima la cattedra di analisi matematica e poi quella di analisi superiore. Nei suoi più di cinquant'anni di attività egli ha dato un grande contributo alla ricerca e all'insegnamento superiore della matematica in Italia ed in particolare a Roma, presso l'Istituto Matematico “Guido Castelnuovo”. I suoi lavori di matematica pura e applicata, a partire dai suoi noti contributi alla teoria matematica dell'elasticità, sono stati apprezzati dai colleghi di tutto il mondo. -
