Democrats

Joe Biden Tweeted “Let’s act to ensure that the world we leave behind for our kids & grandkids is better than how we found it. #EarthDay.”

Lincoln Chafee Interview ran in print with the Brown Daily Herald.

Martin O’Malley Tweeted “Opposing bad trade deals like TPP is just common sense. Let’s make our voices heard” and included link to Bad Trade Deals video from yesterday. Reported that he will travel to NH on May 13.

Bernie Sanders Stalled action on TPP by using an procedural maneuver in the Senate Finance Committee. He objected to a rule that allows committees to meet during legislative sessions and in doing so he prevented the Finance Committee from addressing the trade bill until 4pm. That is significant because Senate Democrats have dozens of amendments prepared for the bill, which will take several hours to address in committee.

10 HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON VIDEO GREETING FOR REACH OUT AND READ OF GREATER NEW YORK’s 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION TO BE RECORDED APRIL 23, 2015

Good evening. I’m delighted to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Reach Out and Read of Greater New York and to join in honoring the incredible work this organization is doing—both here and across the country.

We all know how wonderful it is when a child sits on your lap as you read a favorite bedtime story, witnessing a face light up as you turn each page together to find out what happens next. And it’s not just kids’ faces that light up, it’s their brains too. Scientists can literally watch the synapses and neurons firing away when parents read and talk to their children from the earliest days. It helps them learn words, build vocabulary, and develop their brains.

Unfortunately, too many of our youngest kids aren’t getting the support they need to grow and thrive – especially in families who have to work harder than ever just to get by. Economic pressures on parents translate to less time reading, talking, and singing with their children. And by the age of 4, children in lower-income families have heard 30 million fewer words than their higher-income peers. Because they hear fewer words, they learn fewer words. Experts call this the “word gap” and it leads to an “achievement gap.”

That’s why I launched Too Small to Fail almost two years ago – to give parents the tools and information they need to talk, read, and sing more with their kids – giving them the best possible start in school and in life.

I am particularly proud that Reach Out and Read is one of Too Small to Fail’s partners, working to distribute 500,000 books from Scholastic to families who need them most through their sites across the country. Just recently, New York City announced its new word gap campaign, Talk to Your Baby, which will distribute books and Too Small to Fail’s Sesame Street Family Resource Guide through Reach Out and Read clinics and child care facilities in Brownsville and the South Bronx.

Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model works. Research shows that your families read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger

11 vocabularies and stronger language skills than those who did not participate in the program.

To the staff, board, and volunteers here tonight, I applaud you. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to early literacy and school readiness, and for everything you do everyday to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their God-given potential. Here’s to the next 15 years of success!

12 HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON VIDEO GREETING TO CUNY MACAULAY HONORS COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT TO BE RECORDED APRIL 23, 2015

Hello everyone! I am so delighted to join you on this special day and to celebrate this milestone achievement in your lives.

Ten years ago I was honored to address the first-ever graduating class of Macaulay [Muh-call-ee] Honors College. At that time, Macaulay [Muh-call-ee] was a new institution that spoke to the promise of a world-class public education for New York City’s highest achieving students. Ten years later, your ranks have more than doubled and that promise has been fulfilled.

Each of you should be proud of all your accomplishments, both personal and academic. The scholarship, experiences, and programs at Macaulay [Muh-call-ee] have provided you an unparalleled opportunity and preparation to seize the future.

As Macaulay [Muh-call-ee] graduates, you reflect the city in which you live and diversity of the CUNY student body. Many of you are children of immigrants, graduates of public high schools, and the first in your families to attend college. Just as New York is an exceptional city, you have proven yourselves to be exceptional students and citizens. You have volunteered with community organizations, undertaken serious field research, and studied abroad. You are entrepreneurs and innovators. And most importantly, you are daughters and sons of proud parents and families.

It is a joy to be able to celebrate with you what the Macaulay [Muh-call-ee] community has been able to do over this past decade. Today you join 2,700 alumni in heeding the call to make the world a better place. In the years ahead, you will build careers in public service, education, finance, medicine, and the arts. My charge to you is to use your extraordinary talents to never stop trying solve the challenges facing New York City, our nation, and our world.

Congratulations, my friends, and Godspeed!

13 HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON VIDEO TRIBUTE TO SARAH BROWN, THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT TEEN AND UNPLANNED PREGNANCY TO BE RECORDED APRIL 23, 2015

Good evening, everyone. While I regret that I cannot be with in Washington tonight, I am so delighted to join in celebrating and thanking Sarah Brown for her many years of dedication and service to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

Thanks in large part to Sarah’s smart and steady leadership, one of our nation’s great success stories of the past two decades has been the truly extraordinary declines in teen pregnancy. As you know, the numbers are positively breathtaking: teen pregnancy has plummeted 52 percent since peaking in the early 1990s. There has been significant progress in all 50 states. And, importantly, huge declines among all racial and ethnic groups. These declines translate into real life opportunities for young women and young men who can continue on a forward- moving path toward higher education and careers before undertaking the responsibilities of parenting.

I remember well in 1995 when my husband challenged parents and leaders across the country to create a National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. And fondly recall working closely with Sarah, Isabel Sawhill, and Governor Tom Kean as they launched it. None of us could have imagined how impressive the progress would be. But as Sarah herself is no doubt telling you tonight, our nation’s work in helping young people avoid unplanned pregnancy and achieve their goals for the future remains unfinished. It is still the case that roughly one in four teens get pregnant by age 20. That’s why The National Campaign is still tackling this issue in innovative ways, including starting an important conversation about the positive role that contraception plays in shaping women’s lives and destinies.

The importance of this work has been clear to Sarah from the start: by helping teens and young adults delay early and unplanned pregnancy, we can improve the overall wellbeing of society. And so I applaud you, Sarah, for all you have done in your remarkable career to help improve the life prospects of countless teens, children, and families nationwide. You have my very best wishes as you switch gears to assume full-time grandmother duties. Congratulations, my friend.

14 HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON REMARKS TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC PARTY’S DELEGATE CONVENTION TO BE RECORDED APRIL 23, 2015

Hello, South Carolina Democrats! To your chair, Jaime Harrison; Party officers, elected officials, friends, and delegates: Thank you.

Thank you for organizing precincts, making calls, knocking on doors, and registering voters. Thank you for the hours you’ve spent and the blocks you’ve walked on behalf of the South Carolina Democratic Party.

I know this work is challenging. But you don’t do it because it’s easy. You do it because you care. You care about quality education from pre-K through college. You care about seniors, who shouldn’t have to choose between rent and medication. You care that everyone is treated with respect by law enforcement and no politician ever takes your vote for granted. You care about creating good jobs and paying workers fairly. And you’re determined to do something about it.

We don’t yet know who the Republican nominee for president will be. But we do know that they’ll be offering the same economic agenda that has failed American families again and again – a throwback to the past instead of a vision for the future.

There are four big fights we have to take on and win. We have to build the economy of tomorrow, not yesterday. We have to strengthen families and communities. We have to fix our dysfunctional political system and get unaccountable money out of it. And we have to protect our country from the threats we’re facing today and the ones over the horizon.

From the Lowcoutry to the Upstate, the Pee-Dee region through the Midlands; South Carolinians need a champion. And I want to be that champion.

I hope you’ll go to hillaryclinton dot com slash South Carolina and sign up to volunteer and get involved. We’ve got a great team on the ground who are eager to work with you and there is so much we can do together to help all Americans build better lives for themselves and for their families. So thank you for your commitment and for your great work. I look forward to seeing you in person soon.

Since then, Women in the World has become a premiere annual conference for women – and for the men who champion them – by presenting vivid journalistic narratives, stirring videos, and provocative discussions.

Past participants have included , Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, Christine Lagarde, Madeleine K. While Women in the World retains editorial control of its content, The New York Times is a partner in the business.

Women in the World Foundation

In 2011, a separately funded, nonprofit Women in the World Foundation was created to shine a light on the work of its honorees and other worthwhile nonprofits. Over the next two years, the foundation donated $1.1 million, including ten Women of Impact grants of $25,000 each. In 2013, the foundation gave a $650,000 grant to Vital Voices, thereby turning its nonprofit initiatives over to the organization. Vital Voices continues to administer the Women of Impact awards, and also receives a portion of the proceeds from the Women in the World Summit each year.

Awardees:

Lifetime Leadership Award: Melanne Verveer

In 2009, President Obama nominated Melanne Verveer to be the first ever U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues at the Department of State. Ambassador Verveer spent the past four years working with Secretary of State to coordinate foreign policy issues and activities relating to the political, economic and social advancement of women, traveling to nearly sixty countries. In such capacity, she worked to mobilize concrete support for women’s political and economic empowerment through public-private partnerships as well by working to fully integrate women’s participation and rights into U.S. foreign policy. President Obama also appointed Verveer to serve as U.S. Representative to the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Today she is the Director of Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security. The Institute seeks to enhance national and global security by documenting the crucial role women play in peace-building and security through research and scholarship and by engaging global leaders from government, civil society and the private sector in conversations on the urgent issues of out times.

Ambassador Verveer is also the founding partner of Seneca Point Global, the global women strategy firm. SPG partners with leading companies and institutions to design, implement and measure integrated strategies that focus on women and girls and drive sustainable results – whether social, economic or both. She is the co-author of the forthcoming book, FAST FORWARD: How Women Can Achieve Power and Purpose.

Prior to her role at the State Department, Ambassador Verveer served as Chair and Co-CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international NGO she co-founded to invest in emerging women leaders. Prior to Vital Voices, she served as Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady in the Clinton Administration. She was chief assistant to Hillary Clinton in her wide-ranging international activities to advance women’s rights and further social development, democracy and peace-building initiatives. She also led the effort to establish the President’s Interagency Council on Women and was instrumental in the adoption of the

31 Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000. Prior to her time in the White House, Ambassador Verveer served in a number of leadership roles in public policy organizations and as congressional staff.

Ambassador Verveer has a B.S. and M.S. from Georgetown University. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission and the World Bank Advisory Council on Gender and Development. She has served as the 2013 Humanitas visiting professor at Cambridge University. In 2008, the President of Ukraine awarded her the Order of Princess Olga. She holds several honorary degrees and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for Distinguished Service.

Inspiration Award: Gabby Giffords

Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords has become known across the country for her resilience in the face of violence, and for her consensus- building leadership in Congress.

Giffords was shot in the head at point blank range at a Congress on Your Corner event in Tucson on January 8, 2011. Stepping down from Congress in January, 2012, Giffords said, “I will return, and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.”

Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, founded Americans for Responsible Solutions as a way to encourage elected officials to stand up for both the 2nd amendment and safer communities by communicating directly with the constituents that elect them. Giffords and Kelly will not let leaders across the country forget that Americans are demanding responsible solutions to this critically important issue.

Giffords, who was first a registered republican, considers herself a moderate democrat. She ran in six elections in Southern Arizona and won each of them. A third generation Arizonan, Giffords has long been a gun owner and believes in the constitutional right of all Americans to safe and responsible gun ownership. For more than ten years, Giffords has dedicated herself to public service. As the youngest woman ever elected to the Arizona State Senate, she represented her community in the Arizona Legislature from 2000-2005, and then in Congress from 2006-2012. Her success was credited to her reliance on the old- fashioned values of kindness, candor and hard, grueling work.

32 In Congress, Giffords represented a diverse area that covers 9,000 square miles including a 114-mile border with Mexico. She quickly became a leading champion of border security, energy independence, and the needs of military families and veterans. Consistently ranked as one of the most centrist legislators in Congress, she is a strong supporter of fiscal responsibility, bipartisanship, and government accountability.

She is married to Mark Kelly, a retired Navy Captain and NASA astronaut. Before being assigned to NASA, Kelly flew 39 carrier-based combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. He was also commander of the final mission of Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Giffords was for several years the only U.S. Representative with an active duty military spouse. She was recognized as the Honorary Military Spouse of the Year for 2011 by Military Spouse magazine.

Giffords holds a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning from Cornell University and a B.A. from Scripps College where she was awarded a William Fulbright Scholarship to study for a year in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Vital Voices: Adi Tafuna’I (Samoa)

To outsiders, Samoa’s lush forests represent tropical paradise. But for many Samoans, the remoteness of their Pacific nation results in a poverty of opportunity. Consequently, many Samoans work abroad and send part of their income home to their families. The unintended negative consequences of this dynamic can be devastating: with women often gone away to work for weeks at a time, young girls became more vulnerable to gender based violence by older men in their family. Visionary entrepreneur Adimaimalaga (Adi) Tafuna’i believes this dynamic can and should change. Globally minded, yet rooted in her community, she works to build sustainable economic opportunities for Samoan women and families, in a way that is good for people, prosperity and the planet. Adi was determined to enable women to earn an income in their local community in order to educate, feed and care for their families. She leverages local resources to connect Samoan women to global markets through a village-based approach to economic development. Adi’s organization, Women in Business, is currently working with 600 families across the Pacific.

33 Vital Voices: Samar Minallah Khan (Pakistan)

Samar Minallah Khan, a Pakistani Pashtun documentary filmmaker, journalist, human rights activist, and anthropologist uses advocacy, documentaries, and other forms of media to open the eyes of civil society, policymakers, and human rights activists to culturally- sanctioned forms of violence. She has tackled issues such as human trafficking, dowry, acid crimes, child domestic labor and forced marriage.

Through Ethnomedia, a non-governmental media initiative she founded, she launched a campaign against swara, wherein girls are given as compensation to end disputes—from murder to property quarrels. As a direct result of her work, swara was made illegal in 20014. But that was not enough. Samar sought to ensure this new law was enforced by working with the Pakistani Supreme Court and launching a nation-wide advocacy campaign.

Whatever the medium, Samar’s stories are human, relatable, and culturally appropriate, produced in regional languages and screened locally to engage all levels of society. Samar thus brings unseen images, untold stories and seldom heard voices to public attention—catalyzing political engagement, challenging the status quo, and irrevocably changing the conversation about women and girls in Pakistan.

People’s Voice Award: Becky Straw and Jody Landers

Becky Straw is Co-Founder and CEO of The Adventure Project, which supports “ventures” that “add” something positive to the world by creating jobs that directly benefit communities in developing countries.

After years working in international aid, consulting for UNICEF and helping to launch charity: water, Becky was burdened with the overwhelming reality of abject poverty. She became determined to empower people with the tools and education to become entrepreneurs and serve their own communities with improved health, decreased hunger, a safer environment and clean water. She joined forces with Jody Landers to launch The Adventure Project with the knowledge that people want the opportunity to thrive - not with a handout, but through dignified work.

34 In four years, with only three full-time employees and a dozen passionate interns, the organization has employed 745 entrepreneurs in India, Haiti, Kenya, and Uganda, which include well mechanics, healthcare workers, farmers and stove masons. Together they serve over one million people each day.

When Jody Landers and her husband adopted their two youngest children from Sierra Leone, the experience opened their eyes, broke their hearts and confirmed the desire to see a world where the adoption of orphans is not necessary.

From a tiny town in Iowa, with her laptop and a lot of passion, Jody helped launch The Adventure Project with a mission of getting likeminded, compassionate people involved. Jody knows there are millions of people just like her - eager to help, if they just knew how. To date, she has helped to rally over 5,000 grassroots supporters, raising over $1.3 million in small donations. Jody is the proud mother to six children and the recipient of the 2008 Hallmark Channel’s Remarkable Woman of the Year Award.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON REMARKS FOR THE DIANE VON FURSTENBERG AWARDS NEW YORK, NY APRIL 24, 2015

Diane, thank you. You’re the ultimate trendsetter –in fashion, of course, but also as an unflagging champion for women and girls.

What an incredible group of women we’re celebrating today.

1 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

Gabby, you continue to inspire us all with your bravery and boldness.

Adi, Samar, you’ve proven that your voices are indeed vital.

Becky, Jody, your innovative spirit is something we should honor everyday, in every community.

And Melanne, well, where do I begin.

2 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

I have been blessed to call Melanne Verveer my friend for longer than either of us would care to admit.

Melanne’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and girls is unmatched. She’s always understood that when women are strong, families are strong, and countries are strong. And that’s why we are celebrating her lifetime leadership here today.

3 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

There are no fewer than a thousand stories I could share about Melanne, most of them featuring her wry sense of humor, her 24/7 work habits, her love for friends and family, and her fierce determination to get the job done.

Here’s just one:

In the lead up to the 1995 United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, there were a lot of people who thought we shouldn’t attend.

4 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

Some said it would be implicitly condoning China’s dismal human rights record. Others thought another conference on women wasn’t going to achieve much anyway.

But Melanne was singularly focused on the reason we had to go: To lead the world in our unwavering defense of women’s rights as human rights. And it was precisely in a place like China, where those rights were under threat, that it was most important to take a stand.

5 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

So Melanne and I went to Beijing. There, representatives from 189 nations joined together and made a historic commitment to advance the rights and opportunities of women.

We’ve seen real progress since then. Access to health and education has gone up. The rate of maternal mortality has been cut in half. The global gender gap in primary schools has nearly closed.

6 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

Melanne has been there every step of the way. And I’ve been constantly figuring out how to keep up with her.

From the White House to Vital Voices to serving as the first-ever Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues, Melanne has marched into every corner of the world. Everywhere that women need a champion, she’s there.

7 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

And instead of slowing down, she’s only speeding up – whether it’s at the Institute for Women, Peace and Security at Georgetown, or at Seneca Point Global, or soon at a bookstore near you.

Melanne is the friend you want in your corner. And she’s the advocate women and girls need in our corner.

8 DVF Awards – 4/21/2015 @ 3:30pm

The progress we’ve made over the past twenty years wouldn’t have been possible without her leadership.

So, thank you, Melanne, for all you have given me, all you have given women, all you have given our world. Congratulations on this well- deserved honor! ###
