GRANT SUPPORT Principal Investigator: Feasibility and Acceptability of Home-Based Continuing Care . NIDA 2014- 2016, Total Award: $222,260. Summary: This R21 application proposes to develop and pilot test Home-based Continuing Care (HCC) for young adults (ages 18-25 yrs) leaving residential treatment. HCC will combine two efficacious approaches: Telephone-based CC (TCC) and Contingency Management (CM). Co-Investigator: Testing the Effectiveness of a Graphic Novel Health Education Curriculum for Patients with Addiction . PCORI 2014-2017. Summary: This study aims to develop a patient- centered Health Education Toolkit that will introduce patients with alcohol use disorders to early recovery content and assist patients in evaluating the need for MAT. The Toolkit, presented in a graphic novel format, will employ a shared decision making approach. (PI: Adam C. Brooks) Co-Investigator: Group Intervention to Increase Breastfeeding Duration among Puerto Rican Mothers. NICHD 2014-2016. Summary: In this application, we propose to determine feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effect sizes of a peer alone and combined with group-based financial incentives to increase breastfeeding duration among low-income Puerto Rican mothers. (PI: Yukiko Washio). Kirby Vita Page 5

Co-Investigator: Predicting AOD Relapse and Treatment Completion from Social Media Use. NIDA 2014-2017. Summary: This research will adapt tools to analyze social media interactions by individuals in Alcohol or Drug Abuse (AOD) treatment and allow us to analyze naturally- occurring social media communications to potentially reveal new insights to aid our understanding of risk factors, attitudes, and behaviors associated with relapse and dropout in alcohol and drug treatment. (PI: Brenda Curtis) Principal Investigator (at time of award): Integrating Substance Abuse Assessment & Intervention in Primary Care Settings, Pennsylvania Department of Health, 2011-2015, Total Award: $4,500,000. Summary: This grant funds a randomized controlled trial of SBIRT (Screening patients for problematic use, providing a single-session Brief Intervention for patients who screen positive, and Referring to specialty Treatment for those with moderate to severe use) and enhanced SBIRT (2 to 6 brief intervention sessions) in three primary care clinics that serve a low-income, minority population in urban Philadelphia. The project assesses engagement, drug use, and other health outcomes and includes a cost-effectiveness analysis, formative and process evaluations, and a major minority training component. It involves collaboration of 6 institutions. [Transferred to junior Co-Investigator (Brooks) to promote his career; current role: Co-Investigator ]. Principal Investigator: Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research, NIDA 2013-2015. Total Award: $96,918. Summary: The purpose of this minority supplement was to develop the research career of an African-American investigator, as this minority group has low representation in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Although the grant was awarded for two years, the award stipulated that funding would end when the investigator attained independent funding. Under Dr. Kirby’s tutelage, the recipient, Dr. Brenda Curtis, received her first R01 during the first year of funding, thus the award ended in 2014. Principal Investigator: Parents’ Translational Research Center , NIDA, 2010-2016, Total Award: $11,354,806. Summary: This center brings an experienced, multidisciplinary team of researchers, communications experts, scientific advisors, and parents to take evidence-based interventions for adolescent drug use and adapt, evaluate, and communicate them directly to parents so that they can be better prepared to handle issues that occur at various stages of adolescent substance use. One of the three studies currently funded under the center adapts and tests a parent-focused version of a brief intervention for parents of adolescents with early use (Winters, PI); the second develops and tests a Consumer Guide that will provide information for parents seeking treatment for their children, (Cacciola, PI); and the third adapts and tests a parent-focused version of an intervention (CRAFT) to help parents engage and motivate treatment-resistant adolescents. Principal Investigator: Multimedia Toolkits to Implement 12-Step Recovery Concepts in Group Counseling , NIAAA, 2009-2014, $2,222,348. Summary: The purpose of this grant is to develop and test a curriculum of 5 toolkits designed to assist counselors in providing accurate information about the 12-step approach and examine the utilization of the toolkit and effects on 12-Step session quality, satisfaction, post-discharge meeting attendance and drug use. [Not PI at time of award. Grant transferred when original PI left research field .] Co-Investigator: Toolkits: Will implementing an evidence-based curriculum improve group counseling? NIDA, 2009-2011, $299,608. Summary: The purpose of this grant is to develop and test a curriculum of 6 toolkits designed to assist counselors in providing Relapse Prevention to clients in a group setting and assess toolkit use and acceptability, as well as client knowledge of RP and attendance in treatment. (PI: Adam Brooks) Co-Investigator: Contingency Management for Cocaine Dependence: Cash vs Vouchers , NIDA, 2007-2012, $450,216. Summary: The purpose of this is to examine the efficacy, safety, and cost-savings of using cash reinforcement vs voucher reinforcement in reinforcement therapy. (PI: David Festinger) Kirby Vita Page 6

Principal Investigator: Behavior Therapy Development of Group CM in Methadone Treatment , NIDA, 2005-2010. $2,258,019. Summary: The purpose of this Stage 1 research is to adapt an efficacious individual contingency management intervention to be delivered in a group format. Principal Investigator: CRAFT Behavior Therapy Phase 2 Study: Tx Entry Component , NIDA, 2004- 2010. $2,830,880. Summary: This study will allow us to determine if the Treatment Entry Training (TEnT) component of Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is sufficient to produce treatment entry of the drug user. Principal Investigator: A Behavioral Model for Maintenance of Drug Abstinence , NIDA, 2003-2009, $1,616,040. Summary. This clinical trial examined CM duration, the development of new behaviors incompatible with drug use, and the availability of natural maintaining contingencies of reinforcement. Principal Investigator Community Reinforcement through Religious Communities , NIDA, 2002-2005, $890,500. Summary. This Stage I Behavior Therapy Development research developed an intervention for cocaine abusing African American women that implemented CRAFT through religious communities rather than family members. Principal Investigator. An Interview for Families of Drug Users , NIDA, 2000-2004, $1,200,000. Summary: The purpose of this project was to develop a multidimensional clinical and research instrument for measuring the problems faced by persons in a close relationship with a drug user and to establish test-retest reliability, concurrent validity, and divergent validity of the instrument. Co-Principal Investigator. Cocaine Tx For Homeless Women: Community Support (CRA) , NIDA, 1999-2001, $100,000. Summary: The purpose of this project was to see if the Community Reinforcement Approach, administered to homeless women, through the African American church community, could increase long-term drug abstinence relative to a standard residential treatment. (Co-PI: Gerald Stahler) Principal Investigator, (Subcontract). Effects of managed care on substance abuse services. Center for Substance Abuse Treatment , 1997 - 1999, $40,600. Summary: This grant was part of a 21-site national cooperative agreement examining the impact of managed care on vulnerable populations.
