I. Influence Ef the Greek Fable on the Indian Fable I. Relationships CHAPTER FIVE THE IRRADIATION OF THE HELLENISTIC FABLE I. Influence ef the Greek Fable on the Indian Fable I. Relationships between India and Greece Leaving for a moment the theme of the continuation of the Greek fable in the Latin fable, which has occupied us throughout this vol­ ume and will occupy us in the following one, as well as other influences of the Greek fable that must be attributed to the Imperial Age, generally late, here we will consider the influence exercised by the Greek fable on other literatures, which could be dated, in gen­ eral terms, in the Hellenistic Age. This is the influence of the Greek fable on the Indian and the Egyptian fables. We have already said that in the different versions of the Panchatantra we believe we can discern Greek influences, together with elements of Mesopotamian origin and other properly Indian ones. The same must be said of other Indian fables to which we have referred, those of the Sendebar, fables of the Mahabharata, of the ]iitaka, etc. 1 The influence of the Greek fable on the Indian one in the Hellenistic Age (and, through India, throughout the East) is a very important fact that has not received the attention it deserves. It is, in a cer­ tain sense, comparable to the influence of Graeco-Buddhist art, of Hellenistic influence, on the sculpture of the East and also of the painting that we may call Graeco-Buddhist and which we know through the frescoes in the Ajanta Caves. The point of departure for all these facts is the close contact between the Indian and Greek cultures throughout the valley of the Indus and in Bactria, between the Hindu Kush and the Oxus and in Afghanistan. It is not only a question, then, of the conquest by Alexander of the Indus basin, which lasted a short time. THE IRRADIATION OF THE HELLENISTIC FABLE 687 the territories to the East of the Indus to the Indian monarch Chandra Gupta, communication was not interrupted with a continent that extended from Afghanistan to Bengal. Seleucus married one of Chandra Gupta's daughters and Megasthenes, the author of a book on India that was the main source of knowledge on same for the Greek public, was an ambassador to his court. Not the only source, we must add the writings of Onesicritus and Nearchus, who accom­ panied Alexander, as well as those of Daimachus, another envoy of Seleucus, and others besides. 2 The relations between the Greeks and the Indian dynasty of the Maurya, that of Chandra Gupta, in the 3rd and 2nd centuries, were close. India was by no means an unknown region (except, partly, for Bengal and the Deccan), but was very well-known through ambas­ sadors and travellers such as those mentioned. We do not know whether Chandra Gupta had representatives in the Greek courts. But Asoka, his grandson, the great king protector of Buddhism and author of the famous rock edicts that are to be found throughout his vast domains, almost the whole of India, sent ambassadors or missionaries to all the Greek courts, in addition to those of East, as he tells on one of his edicts (no. XIII); indeed, one of the other edicts, no. XXV, is written in Greek and Aramaic. Furthermore, during this period, the Greeks were neighbours and, on occasions, conquerors of the Indians. They were neighbours through the Kingdom of Bactria, which included, in modern terms, Afghanistan and part of Central Asia. But they were conquerors when the kings Demetrius and Menander established an Inda-Greek kingdom in the first half of the 2nd century throughout the basin of the Indus, the Central Ganges and Kashmir. These kings had to fight with Greek armies such as that of Eucratides, or Indian ones such as that of Pusyamitra, who had dethroned the Maurya. They founded Inda-Greek cities such as the new Taxila, and coined money with inscriptions in Greek and Indian; in short, they created a whole new environment in which Indian culture continued living under Greek power and organization.3 There was close contact.4 This is reflected in numerous facts. Barsine, Daughter of Artabazus Barsine was by birth a minor princess of the Achaemenid Empire of the Persians, for her father, Artabazus, was the son of a Great King’s daughter.197 It is known that his father was Pharnabazus, who had married Apame, the daughter of Artaxerxes II, some time between 392 - 387BC.198 Artabazus was a senior Persian Satrap and courtier and was latterly renowned for his loyalty first to Darius, then to Alexander. Perhaps this was the outcome of a bad experience of the consequences of disloyalty earlier in his long career. In 358BC Artaxerxes III Ochus had upon his accession ordered the western Satraps to disband their mercenary armies, but this edict had eventually edged Artabazus into an unsuccessful revolt. He spent some years in exile at Philip’s court during Alexander’s childhood, starting in about 352BC and extending until around 349BC,199 at which time he became reconciled with the Great King. It is likely that his daughter Barsine and the rest of his immediate family accompanied him in his exile, so it is feasible that Barsine knew Alexander when they were both still children. Plutarch relates that she had received a “Greek upbringing”, though in point of fact this education could just as well have been delivered in Artabazus’ Satrapy of Hellespontine Phrygia, where the population was predominantly ethnically Greek. As a young girl, Barsine appears to have married Mentor,200 a Greek mercenary general from Rhodes. Artabazus had previously married the sister of this Rhodian, so Barsine may have been Mentor’s niece.

A CASE STUDY IN THE METHODOLOGY OF COMPARATIVE PHILOSOPHY MONTE RANSOME JOHNSON & BRETT SHULTS ABSTRACT: We offer a sceptical examination of a thesis recently advanced in a monograph published by Princeton University Press entitled Greek Buddha: Pyrrho’s Encounter with Early Buddhism in Central Asia. In this dense and probing work, Christopher I. Beckwith, a professor of Central Eurasian studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, argues that Pyrrho of Elis adopted a form of early Buddhism during his years in Bactria and Gandhāra, and that early Pyrrhonism must be understood as a sect of early Buddhism. In making his case Beckwith claims that virtually all scholars of Greek, Indian, and Chinese philosophy have been operating under flawed assumptions and with flawed methodologies, and so have failed to notice obvious and undeniable correspondences between the philosophical views of the Buddha and of Pyrrho. In this study we take Beckwith’s proposal and challenge seriously, and we examine his textual basis and techniques of translation, his methods of examining passages, his construal of problems and his reconstruction of arguments. We find that his presuppositions are contentious and doubtful, his own methods are extremely flawed, and that he draws unreasonable conclusions. Although the result of our study is almost entirely negative, we think it illustrates some important general points about the methodology of comparative philosophy. KENNEDY. alleged influence of Christianity on the early development of Hinduism has long been a subject of investigation and controversy. Weber summed up in a masterly manner all that had been said for the one side; while with equal acumen Barth criticised and denied his conclusions. The discussion has had the effect of restricting the controversy to two points, both connected in the main with the worship of Krishna. The first relates to the Hindu doctrine of faith, or bhakti, as an essential condition of salvation, and has been dealt with by Dr. Grierson in a recent number of this Journal.1 The second refers to the origin of the child Krishna, his legend, and his cult, and is the subject of the present essay. The problem may be stated thus. We have in the Krishna of Dwaraka a great nature - god of immemorial antiquity, worshipped in the Kabul mountains and the Indus Valley. We also have a child Krishna who is not a nature-god at all, and has nothing in common with the elder Krishna except the name. The genesis of this child can be traced back to Mathura and to the beginning of the sixth century A.B. This cuckoo nursling usurps the place of the ancient hero; and the multifarious elements of his legend, and the clumsiness with which they have been fitted together, show that he is no natural development, but a forcible adaptation of something foreign. Some of the dramatis personm in the legend are Buddhist and others are Hindu, while the story itself betrays a ' marvellous' 1 J.R.A.S.

The gap has just been filled by Veronica Bucciantini (henceforth B.), who gives a study encom- passing all aspects of Nearchus’ career and personality. This book is a revised version of her doctoral thesis, completed under the supervision of a leading expert in ancient geography, Serena Bianchetti. It does not consist of a new commentary of the extant fragments,1 and B. certainly does not aim at exten- sively addressing and discussing the many complex issues raised by this text: for instance, Nearchus’ ‘scientific’ skills (ch. 3: ‘N. osservatore “scientifico”’) are not studied against the background of fourth-century Greek science and culture. Instead B. provides a convenient synthesis presenting the various as- pects of Nearchus’ life and actions, some of which are more carefully investi- gated than others. B.’s inquiry, mostly based on Arrian’s Indikê, is backed up by an excellent up-to-date bibliography. Her Italian is rather easy to follow. However, the author of the present review, who is not a native speaker, is un- able to detect typos and mistakes.

The Macedonian nobility were traditionally fine horsemen, hut the infantry was poorly armed and badly organised until the reign of Alexander II in 369/8 B.C. This king formed a small royal standing army; it consisted of a cavalry force of Macedonian nobles, which he named the 'hetairoi' (or Companion]! cavalry, and an infantry body drawn from the commoners and trained to fight in phalangite formation: these he called the »pezetairoi» (or foot-companions). Philip II (359-336 B.C.) expanded the kingdom and greatly increased the manpower resources for war. Towards the end of his reign he started preparations for the invasion of the Persian empire and levied many more Macedonians than had hitherto been involved in the king's wars. In order to attach these men more closely to himself he extended the meaning of the terms »hetairol» and 'pezetairoi to refer to the whole bodies of Macedonian cavalry and heavy infantry which served under him on his campaigning.

    By Surendra Kumar, Head Dept. of History, Patna University The Maurya Empire displayed many attributes that are common or indicative of several empires throughout world history. Perhaps the most important feature is when the government unifies several different groups under a single ideology, which was Buddhism in the case of the Mauryans. Ashoka’s personal conversion to Buddhism and the ways he promoted Buddhist ideas were important, but the king also molded some aspects of Buddhist theology to fit with his religiously pluralistic kingdom. All branches of Buddhism and all practicing Buddhists recognize the Four Noble Truths as the core tenets of the religion. The Four Noble Truths are as follows: to live is to suffer; suffering comes from desire; it is truthful to eliminate suffering; and the elimination of suffering comes from following the Noble Eightfold Path. The Noble Eightfold Path involves these thoughts and actions: right view, right thought, right speech, right actions, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. When one examines the theology espoused in Ashoka’s rock and pillar edicts, it becomes clear that the king did not promote a traditional form of Buddhism, but one- that was more in line with older Indian religions. Neither the Four Noble Truths nor the Noble Eightfold Path are mentioned in any of the edicts. With that said, the policies that Ashoka promoted in his edicts did coincide with the general idea of ahisma, which was shared by Buddhists, Jains, Ajivikas, and traditional followers of the Vedic religion alike. One crucial aspect in which Buddhism differed from its Vedic parent religion was the recognition of the caste system.

From his book we get a lot of information about Mauryan administration and life of the people. The book Arthshastra is attributed to Kautilya or Chanakya. It provides details of the art of administration, society and economy in the age of ​ the Mauryas. The Vayu Purana and Matsya Purana give a list of rulers of different dynasties, ​ Mauryas being one of them. Vishakadatta's Mudrarakshasa is considered to be the best historical drama in the whole of Sanskrit literature. It throws light on the position of the Nandas and the activities of Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya. It also gives us an idea of the social life of people in those days. Archaeological Sources The Rock Edicts of Ashoka-are the most reliable sources of information for Ashoka's rule. ​ ​ Ashoka in Rock Edict XII prescribes the following rules to be followed: ​ (i) Non-violence abstention from killing of living beings, (ii) Truthfulness, (iii) Obedience to parents and elders, and (iv) Respect towards teachers.
