UPSTATE ECHOES Is Arch Merrill's Ninth Book
UPSTATE EcnfJes by ARCH MERRILL UPSTATE ECHOES is Arch Merrill's ninth book. like the others that have won so many thousands of readers, it is a regional book. Only, as its title implies, it embraces a larger region. Besides many a tale of the Western New York countryside about which Storyteller Merrill has been writing for more than a decade, in his lively, distinctive style, this new book offers fascinating chapters about other Upstate regions, among them the North Country, the Niagara Frontier and the Southern Tier. Through its pages walk colorful figures of the Upstate past- the fair lady a North Coun try grandee won by the toss of a coin- the onetime King of Spain who held court in the backwoods- the fabulous Elbert Hubbard, "The Fro" of East Aurora- the missionary martyrs and a silver-tongued infidel, natives of the land of Finger Lakes, who made his tory in their time- the movie stars who once made Ithaca, far above Cayuga's waters, a little Hollywood- the daredevils who through the years in barrels and boats and on tight ropes have sought to conquer the "thunder water" of Niagara. The past comes to life again in stories of historic mansions, covered bridges, Indian council fires and the oldtime glory of Char lotte, Rochester's lake port that once was "The Coney Island of the West." You will meet such interesting people as the last surviving sextuplet in America and the "The Wonderful Man" who leaped from a parachute at the age of 81. • UPSTATE ECHOES Other Books by ARcH MERRILL A RIVER RAMBLE THE LAKES COUNTRY THE RIDGE THE TOWPATH ROCHESTER SKETCH BOOK STAGE COACH TOWNS TOMAHAWKS AND OLD LACE LAND OF THE SENECAS UPSTATE ECHOES BY ARCH MERRILL Being an Assemblage of Stories about Unusual People, Places and Events in the Upstate New York of Long Ago and of Only Yesterday Many af Them Appeared in Whole or in Part in the Rochester N.Y. -

Lot 11 Lot 26 Lot 53 From the desk at T Bar... Welcome to the 21st Kuntz Simmental Farm, McIntosh Livestock, SAJ Simmentals Annual Bull Sale, March 17, 2020 at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. For over two decades, this sale has been selling high quality Simmental bulls to the livestock industry. Their success has been consumer demand from the commercial livestock producers to many purebred breeders who have chosen to select high value bulls. The offering consists of a powerful lineup of seventy yearling bulls. The red and the black purebreds are exciting, stylish and have muscle, with deep body shape… exactly what you want your steer calves to possess. The fullbloods are burly and powerful and a well-kept secret. We will never have enough fullbloods in this offering, as they are meat machines. This sale has grown into a source for superior sire prospects, whether you are looking for domestics or fullbloods. Each year, Blair and Stephanie go to Canadian Western Agribition to receive their award, People’s Choice Championship in the commercial barn, but it is not without effort for 365 days of the year. Their pen at Agribition captured the Supreme Champion Bulls and of course, the Champion Simmental Pen. Locally, at Edam Fall Fair they duplicated the task and at Lloydminster Stockade Roundup, the McIntoshs exhibited the Reserve Grand Simmental Bull in the open show…they all sell! The bulls will be on display at Lloyd Ex the day prior, do not hesitate to stop by or feel free to give any of the boys a call as they will be pleased to discuss the cattle business, the bulls and those that will fit your breeding needs. -

“When the Gunfire Ends”: Deconstructing PTSD Among Military Veterans in Marvel's the Punisher
“When the Gunfire Ends”: Deconstructing PTSD Among Military Veterans in Marvel’s The Punisher GRAEME JOHN WILSON In the field of American masculinity studies, few research topics are as prominent as the military. The military is “an institution populated with men, but it [also] plays a primary role in shaping images of masculinity in the larger society” (Barrett 129),1 yet “there is [no] consensus among all men and women in any national setting about the ideal man” (Nagel 247). The soldier is an especially enduring archetype of hegemonic masculinity, a concept describing the most currently honored and idealized forms of masculinity in a society (Connell and Messerschmidt 832). The popularity of this archetype can be partially attributed to the extensive representation that the American armed forces have enjoyed in mass media, with the grit, bravery, and heroism of the American soldier being not only celebrated in mainstream news media, but also mythologized in blockbuster Hollywood productions: Militaries around the world have defined the soldier as an embodiment of traditional male sex role behaviors. From recruiting posters that seek “a few good men” to popular media images of John Wayne fearlessly leading the troops in a World War II battle, Tom Cruise as a “top gun” pilot, or Sylvester Stallone as Rambo single-handedly rescuing American prisoners of war, there has long been an association between the military and images of masculinity. (Barrett 129) 1 Although women have since been integrated into the military and deployed in combat, the military remains a largely traditional institution “structured along the lines of gender,” with maleness being viewed as an inherent element of soldiering (Herbert 7-8). -

Transcript for #TalkDaredevil Episode 3: The Future of Mature Marvel TV VOICEOVER: You're listening to #TalkDaredevil, the official podcast of the Save Daredevil campaign. PHYLLIS: Hey, everybody. Welcome back to a new episode of our new Daredevil podcast, #TalkDaredevil. I am super-stoked to be joined by some different members of our team. I'll start off by introducing myself again. I'm Phyllis. You've heard me on the first two episodes, and I’m going to let the rest of the team introduce themselves now. KACEY: Hi, I'm Kacey. RHIANNON: Hey, I'm Rhiannon. You may have heard me before on other podcasts talking about Daredevil and all things Marvel, mostly at Marvel News Desk. KRISTINA: Hey, I'm Kristina. You might have seen me if you've seen our Team Save Daredevil panel from Save Daredevil Con. PHYLLIS: And today we are coming together to talk about the future of mature Marvel TV. Obviously, there's been a lot of changes at Disney, at Marvel, and obviously with this whole campaign's existence. We are doing a lot of work to try to figure out what's going to be the best way to see our show come back. But we're going to maybe take a quick break from just talking Daredevil and have a fun discussion about what we all want to see coming from Marvel, specifically with the mature content. So I think a good place for us to start would be looking back at what we did get from the previous age of mature Marvel. -
Bamcinématek Presents Skateboarding Is Not a Crime, a 24-Film Tribute to the Best of Skateboarding in Cinema, Sep 6—23
BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, Sep 6—23 Opens with George Gage’s 1978 Skateboard with the director in person The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Aug 16, 2013—From Friday, September 6 through Thursday, September 12, BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, from the 1960s to the present. The ultimate in counterculture coolness, skateboarding has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts. Opening the series on Friday, September 6 is George Gage’s Skateboard (1978), following a lumpish loser who comes up with an ill-advised scheme to manage an all-teen skateboarding team in order to settle his debts with his bookie. An awesomely retro ride through 70s skateboarding culture, Skateboard was written and produced by Miami Vice producer Dick Wolf and stars teen idol Leif Garrett (Alfred Hitchcock’s daughter plays his mom!) and Z-Boys great Tony Alva. Gage will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Two of the earliest films in the series showcase the upright technique that dominated in the 60s. Skaterdater (1965—Sep 23), Noel Black’s freewheelingly shot, dialogue-free puppy-love story (made with pre-adolescent members of Torrance, California’s Imperial Skateboard Club) is widely considered to be the first skateboard movie. Claude Jutra’s cinéma vérité lark The Devil’s Toy (1966—Sep 23), is narrated in faux-alarmist fashion, with kids whipping down the hills of Montreal, only to have their decks confiscated by the cops. -
