Whereas once editors had to squeeze a book, with notes, glossaries, bibliographies, lists of variants, illustrations, critical introductions—a clanking hulk of editorial apparatus—between two cloth-covered boards, new media paradigms can create and sustain inconceivably immense bodies of work.i With dazzling multimedia components, open-ended collaborations between readers connected by wikis and discussion forums, and armies of young scholars eager to play, the digital literary archive seems to represent the very latest, most promising, least contained, and in all ways biggest thing around. Yet as older media forms—print, film, video, sound recordings— evolve in new media landscapes, they have met (and collided) in what Henry Jenkins has identified as a “convergence culture,” where users may access these many forms through one portal. -

Brandt Course description: The course is conceptualized as an introductory lecture series to American literature from the Early Republic to the Postmodern Era. Hector de Crèvecoeur’s famous question “What then is the American, this new man?” (asked in his Letters from an American Farmer from 1782) has since led to a number of literary discourses either manifesting or challenging the idea of ‘American Exceptionalism.’ Among others, we will discuss texts by Susanna Rowson, Charles Brockden Brown, James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway, Saul Bellow, John Barth, and Jonathan Safran Foer. In Hawthorne’s famous customhouse, some hide away the relics of a prior era where others later discover them and in them glimpse a dark romance of American origins. In the lesser-known customhouse of Herman Melville, the attic harbors no such treasures. It is, like the sarcophagus of the soul, “appallingly vacant as vast,” and origins are precisely what is missing.1 Melville’s fourth novel, Redburn (1849), is the first he began after the largest U.S. territorial acquisition in his lifetime. The conquest of more than half a million square miles from Mexico in 1848, besides appearing to realize the nation’s “Manifest Destiny,” sparked renewed and intense sectional conflict over slavery. It precipitated the Com- promise of 1850, including the nefarious Fugitive Slave Law, and gal- vanized abolitionism. Even before these prominent effects became clear, Melville’s work in the summer of 1849 was already grappling with the basic problem of excess space. -

Summary “Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street” was one of the first stories that Melville published during the brief period when his work was accepted by the major periodicals. It has become his most widely known story, praised for being ahead of its time. The story focuses on a prosperous lawyer, who prides himself on being a “safe man.” Ensconced in his Wall Street law offices, the lawyer manages an office of complementary contrasting scriveners (law copyists) who represent opposing types. The lawyer works around the limitations of his employees in the optimistic belief that his is the enlightened and most effective way to lead life. In effect, he attempts to avoid conflict and promotes compromise. He stands as a representative of nineteenth century American optimism, an outlook that Melville questioned in much of his writing. When a cadaverous man named Bartleby approaches him for employment, the lawyer, pressed for extra help at the time, gladly puts the new employee to work. Bartleby is clearly capable of doing acceptable work, but before long he exhibits an annoying refusal to engage in certain tedious activities, such as proofreading documents. Pressed for time, the lawyer works around this unusual refusal, but before long he discovers that Bartleby is living in the offices at night, subsisting on ginger nuts that he stores in his desk. -

Beginning in July 2017, the Mastheads will pair five contemporary writers with a private studio for a month-long residency, and will host citywide public programming and events. The mission of The Mastheads is to use Pittsfield’s history as a platform to support the imagination and production of new creative work. The physical studio spaces that comprise The Mastheads are architectural interpretations of the original structures in which Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. wrote while in Pittsfield. Title: Water, Fire, and Stone: Images and Meaning in Melville Abstract approved: ____________________________________________________________________ David M. Robinson This thesis is a study of Herman Melville’s symbolism. I have chosen to investigate the elemental images of water, fire, and stone in Moby-Dick (1851), Pierre; Or, The Ambiguities (1852), and Clarel; A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land (1876). This work is a semiotic study, insofar as the association between image and meaning is personally assigned and therefore to a degree inscrutable. This work is a structuralist investigation insofar as structuralism is interested in images that are repeated in separate works by one author, and how these repeated images and their possible meanings cohere. Also related to my structuralist inquiry is how meaning is conveyed. I argue that Melville uses symbols in different ways: meaning is unfixed, his symbols are complex, they overlap, and he sometimes inverts or subverts the meanings of traditional symbols—and also, that Melville’s symbolism is derived, or modeled, consciously or unconsciously, on his skeptical and unfixed spiritual state.
