New this year is a mentoring program that will give both players and coaches the chance to take their game up a notch or two. But before the program can take off, we need your help. Keep your eyes open for a survey in the next few weeks and let us know what you think. If it has anything to do with curling, TAG, YOU’RE IT you’ve come to the wrong place. Be sure to order a free Riverdale nametag on the website by November 3. If you’re shy, it’s a great way for new members to be noticed without having to speak to anyone. Putting the broom down, then changing your mind tribute to some of the ladies of Canadian curling past and present. and putting it somewhere else shows your team that you’re not confident in your call. If you’re not confident, how can they throw confidently? And if you truly have no idea what shot to call, ask your team. MEET THE EXECUTIVE This week, we sit down with RCL Secretary Steph Johns. HALLOWEEN IS COMING UP – GET INSPIRED! So, how's your curling game? Anything you're working on getting better at or are you the perfect curler? Pretty good, I think! But you’ll have to ask one of my team mates to verify that. I’m always working on trying to get a good feel for draw weight. With my back swing I think I have hit weight under control. What position do you play? That depends on what league or event I’m curling in. Curling three times a week, and bonspielin’ whenever I can, allows me to play a good mix of positions. Why did you want to be on the executive board? I’ve been a member of the Riverdale league for 10 years (where does the time go) and I thought it’d be great to give something back and help out. What's your favourite thing about curling in this league? Boozy Sundays! Just kidding. I’d have to say getting to spend Sundays curling with great friends, having some laughs and being able to socialize with other gay curlers. ROTATORS ‘SPIEL REGISTRATION Registration for the Rotators bonspiel is now open to Riverdale members. It’s like maybe the fifth funnest bonspiel in the world. Whether it’s on the subway, in a movie theatre or on the couch at the curling club, some guy always feels it necessary to open their legs into my personal space. Am I being too sensitive? Knees Together Please Dear Knees Together, I can understand why it’s difficult for men to stop the spread of manspreading. After all, these poor fellas have been raised in a world that caters to their every need and want. I can only imagine how difficult it is for men to limit the space they take up, or stop themselves from offering unsolicited advice, or not take over the bbq. But KT, I have the solution. Let’s let everyone air out their genitals. We can start here at Riverdale on Sundays. I guarantee the boys ain’t gonna like it. Well maybe the bisexuals. And another thing, these club couches are made to sit three. Bradley Hayward isn’t available every week to be a lap elf, so make room. Also, men, please stop scratching your crotch in public. It’s gross. It makes me think you have crabs. That is all.     Newsletter of the London Curling Club November 2005 With much excitement and enthusiasm, London Curling Club LCC HOSTS opened its doors on Thursday, October 13 to Team Canada and a group of national and international curling celebrities. The day started with the arrival of the coveted Scott Tournament THE PROS of Hearts (STOH) Trophy, delivered in person by glove-clad Peter Inch, 2006 STOH President, and Jim Waite, 2006 STOH Director of Officials, Stats and Timers and CCA National Curling Coach. A morning Media Conference was held to bring local media up to date about the progress of the STOH and to introduce Team Canada … Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jill Officer and Georgina Wheatcroft (photo, from right to left). Reporters and photographers from the London area viewed a promotional video about the Scott Tournament of Hearts (taking place in London from February 25 to March 5 at the JLC), took photos of Canada’s “Number One” curling team, and participated in a question-and-answer session with Peter Inch and Jennifer Jones and the members of her team. As well, the media and several LCC members had the opportunity to meet and greet the 2005 STOH second-place skip Jenn Hanna, whose spectacular performance in the final game of the 2005 women’s final has made her a fan favourite.     State of the City Address Mayor Jim Watson Wednesday, January 31 The beginning of a New Year always brings with it the opportunity to look back and acknowledge what we have accomplished as a City and as a Council. It’s an exercise I enjoy going through, because it reminds us of the memorable events that have helped define our city in the last year, and gives us an opportunity to remember how our community came together. With our city growing at a fast pace and so many issues coming before us, it’s easy to lose sight of the great community-building projects that are constantly taking shape around us. Before I start, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge that we are on the unceded territory of the Algonquin People, who have lived on these ancestral lands for millennia. I value our ongoing relationship with the surrounding Algonquin communities – Pikwakanagan, Kitigan Zibi and the Algonquin’s of Ontario – and I look forward to continuing our work together to improve the lives of our residents. And I want to welcome Chief Kirby Whiteduck from Pikwakanagan who has joined us today. Page 1 of 55 As I look back on this past year, it’s easy to recognize that 2017 was a great year of celebrations for Ottawa. Our city quickly became the centre of festivities as our country came together in its nation’s capital to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And after years of planning, our entire community embraced the celebrations and made 2017 an unforgettable year in Ottawa.

    Media Release Victoria Hospitals Foundation Raises over $100K to purchase Incubators for NICU at Victoria General Hospital April 8, 2013 For Immediate Release VICTORIA – The Victoria Hospital Foundation today raised $111,656 at an all day radiothon, to purchase three incubators for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Victoria General Hospital immediate past board chair, Rod Dewar announced today. The event was kicked-off with a special and very generous $60,000 from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, a group dedicated to raising funds across Canada for the care of premature and critically ill babies. “We’re very honoured The Sandra Schmirler Foundation has once again chosen to contribute to the care of our community’s tiniest, most fragile patients,” said Rod Dewar, immediate past Board Char, Victoria Hospitals Foundation. “Since 2007, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has given $114,000 to purchase leading-edge equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Victoria General Hospital. Their generosity has helped thousands of babies grow strong and healthy.” Chris Atchison, Vice Chair Sandra Schmirler Foundation Board, was at the Hotel Grand Pacific to present the cheque during the broadcast. "Our commitment to giving directly to Neonatal Intensive Care Units in smaller communities like this, helps ensure that premature and seriously ill babies born here receive the best care possible. Instead of having to be transported to bigger hospitals in the Vancouver Lower Mainland, the parents of these tiny vulnerable babies can remain close to home and their family and friends. We are so pleased and proud to be making a difference for families in this community." The event was brought to life by two local radio stations who broadcast simultaneously – 100.3 The Q and 91.3 Zone FM.
