CHINESE WOMEN - At the 2000 Dalian event in China (FIVB women’s event No. 68 of the 185played to date through Phuket 2008), Zi Xiong and Rong Chi became the first Chinese team to win a SWATCH FIVB World Tour medal by placing third in the final women’s Olympic qualifying event before Sydney 2000 Summer Games. From 2000 through 2005, Jia Tian and Fei Wang captured seven medals, including China’s first two titles by winning 2003 gold medals in Bali and at Milan, Italy. Tian and Fei Wang also captured the bronze medal at the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Berlin, Germany. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Chinese women have captured 41 FIVB medals led by Tian/Jie Wang (25) and Chen Xue/Xi Zhang (17). The two Chinese teams captured podium placements at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with Tian and Jie Wang dropping the gold medal match to Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. Xue and Zhang, who lost to Tian and Jie Wang in the Beijing semi-final, defeated Brazilians Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro for the Olympic bronze medal. CHINESE MEN - Prior to 2006, the Chinese men had never placed higher than 12th in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event (1990 by Cheng Lu and Meng Qi in Enoshima, Japan). After posting a ninth in the 2006 season opening event in Shanghai event, the Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu claimed China's first-ever men's medal in Poland by defeating Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil (FIVB Men's event No. 189 of the 229 stops completed to date). Wu and Xu added a second medal in 2007 by upsetting Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky for the bronze medal at the Norwegian Grand Slam in Stavanger. At the 2008 FIVB season opener in Adelaide, Australia, Wu and Xu became the first Chinese men’s team to compete in a SWATCH gold medal match. Since the Adelaide opener, Wu and Xu have competed in four more SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal matches, but have the lost the finals in Shanghai, Zagreb, Moscow and Marseille.
