On the Present-Day Veneration of Sacred Trees in the Holy Land
ON THE PRESENT-DAY VENERATION OF SACRED TREES IN THE HOLY LAND Amots Dafni Abstract: This article surveys the current pervasiveness of the phenomenon of sacred trees in the Holy Land, with special reference to the official attitudes of local religious leaders and the attitudes of Muslims in comparison with the Druze as well as in monotheism vs. polytheism. Field data regarding the rea- sons for the sanctification of trees and the common beliefs and rituals related to them are described, comparing the form which the phenomenon takes among different ethnic groups. In addition, I discuss the temporal and spatial changes in the magnitude of tree worship in Northern Israel, its syncretic aspects, and its future. Key words: Holy land, sacred tree, tree veneration INTRODUCTION Trees have always been regarded as the first temples of the gods, and sacred groves as their first place of worship and both were held in utmost reverence in the past (Pliny 1945: 12.2.3; Quantz 1898: 471; Porteous 1928: 190). Thus, it is not surprising that individual as well as groups of sacred trees have been a characteristic of almost every culture and religion that has existed in places where trees can grow (Philpot 1897: 4; Quantz 1898: 467; Chandran & Hughes 1997: 414). It is not uncommon to find traces of tree worship in the Middle East, as well. However, as William Robertson-Smith (1889: 187) noted, “there is no reason to think that any of the great Semitic cults developed out of tree worship”. It has already been recognized that trees are not worshipped for them- selves but for what is revealed through them, for what they imply and signify (Eliade 1958: 268; Zahan 1979: 28), and, especially, for various powers attrib- uted to them (Millar et al. -

Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings. -
Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism
Book Review of Hilal Khashan's Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism (Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2000), The Arab World Geographer/Le Géographe du monde arabe 3(2):141-147, 2000. In the book Arabs at the Crossroads, Hilal Khashan, an associate professor of political science at the American University of Beirut, provides a vivid description of Arab political performance since the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century and the subsequent formal abrogation of the Islamic Caliphate in 1924 amidst rising European colonialism and Zionism. The book is small (149 pages of text) but concise and well written. Despite raising some very controversial issues, Khashan has combined the coolness of scholarship with intellectual rigor and political concern. His dispassionate perspective is refreshing and makes the book unapologetically independent and provocative. The book consists of nine chapters mostly focused on Arab political experience during the twentieth century. Chapter 1 examines the roots of the identity crisis in the Arab world, especially the ways in which “nineteenth-century reformers disturbed the Arab mind by sowing distrust in the Ottoman empire, without securing a tenable ideological alternative to that religious state and to Islam which it embodied” (page 1). Chapter 2 discusses the birth and the universalization of the European nation-state model of secular nationalism and its many incomplete versions in non-Western cultures, particularly in Muslim countries where “the clash between ethnocentrism and religion seems to resolve itself to the detriment of the former, without the latter emerging as a clear victor” (page 24). While this is a brilliant description of how modern Arab identity seems to swing constantly from Arab nationalism to Islamic identity and back, it stops short of an in-depth theoretical analysis of what constitutes the essence of identity in the Arab world. -

Nisan / The Levantine Review Volume 4 Number 2 (Winter 2015) Identity and Peoples in History Speculating on Ancient Mediterranean Mysteries Mordechai Nisan* We are familiar with a philo-Semitic disposition characterizing a number of communities, including Phoenicians/Lebanese, Kabyles/Berbers, and Ismailis/Druze, raising the question of a historical foundation binding them all together. The ethnic threads began in the Galilee and Mount Lebanon and later conceivably wound themselves back there in the persona of Al-Muwahiddun [Unitarian] Druze. While DNA testing is a fascinating methodology to verify the similarity or identity of a shared gene pool among ostensibly disparate peoples, we will primarily pursue our inquiry using conventional historical materials, without however—at the end—avoiding the clues offered by modern science. Our thesis seeks to substantiate an intuition, a reading of the contours of tales emanating from the eastern Mediterranean basin, the Levantine area, to Africa and Egypt, and returning to Israel and Lebanon. The story unfolds with ancient biblical tribes of Israel in the north of their country mixing with, or becoming Lebanese Phoenicians, travelling to North Africa—Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya in particular— assimilating among Kabyle Berbers, later fusing with Shi’a Ismailis in the Maghreb, who would then migrate to Egypt, and during the Fatimid period evolve as the Druze. The latter would later flee Egypt and return to Lebanon—the place where their (biological) ancestors had once dwelt. The original core group was composed of Hebrews/Jews, toward whom various communities evince affinity and identity today with the Jewish people and the state of Israel. -

Abstract This article surveys the beliefs concerning the supernatural characteristics and powers of sacred trees in Israel; it is based on a field study as well as a survey of the literature and includes 118 interviews with Muslims and Druze. Both the Muslims and Druze in this study attribute supernatural dimensions to sacred trees which are directly related to ancient, deep-rooted pagan traditions. The Muslims attribute similar divine powers to sacred trees as they do to the graves of their saints; the graves and the trees are both considered to be the abode of the soul of a saint which is the source of their miraculous powers. Any violation of a sacred tree would be strictly punished while leaving the opportunity for atonement and forgiveness. The Druze, who believe in the transmigration of souls, have similar traditions concerning sacred trees but with a different religious background. -

The King’s Student Law Review and Strife Journal, Joint Edition: Issue I (2018) Examining the Concept of Jihad: Closing the Disparity between Scriptural Meaning and Abuse Tasneem Ghazi Since the rise of Islamist extremism, a great deal of academic and public attention has been devoted to understanding the concept of jihad. Today, jihad has risen to the forefront of public knowledge, becoming the most commonly known and misunderstood Islamic concept. Whilst linguistically meaning ‘to struggle’, jihad is defined quite broadly in Islamic scripture as being a ‘duty to realise and struggle towards God’s will’. Since part of this wide concept pertains to military conflict (the ‘Lesser jihad’) and ‘combatting the enemies of Islam’, jihad has often been simply understood as ‘just Islamic war’. The last two decades in particular have witnessed the unprecedented abuse of this term, as Islamist fundamentalists (and activists) have used jihad as a rallying cry to globally conscript Muslims to their causes. This common abuse of jihad is extremely dire, as the duty behind this struggle is a divinely ordained Command that is strongly established in primary sources of Islamic law and jurisprudence (Qura’an and Hadith).1 Indeed even today, many practicing Muslims hold this duty as being an informal ‘sixth pillar of Islam’. This paper seeks to clarify the meaning of jihad according to normative Sunni Islamic law and fiqh (jurisprudence) through a textual, Orthodox Asha’ri perspective. Through this lens, this paper argues that any genuine understanding of jihad within Islamic law is intertwined with the development and history of this concept in addition to a basic understanding of traditional Qur’anic exegesis (held as necessary for deriving any legal principle within Islamic law). -

Program on Arab Reform and Democracy From Political Activism to Democratic Change in the Arab World May 12-13, 2011 Bios of Participants Christopher Alexander Christopher Alexander is Associate Dean for International Programs and Director of the Dean Rusk International Studies Program at Davidson College. He also teaches Middle East politics in Davidson’s Department of Political Science. His publications on political and economic development in North Africa include Tunisia: Stability and Reform in the Modern Maghreb (Routledge, 2010). Maryam Alkhawaja Maryam Alkhawaja currently serves as the head of the foreign relations office at the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. Due to threats of arrest during a crackdown on activists, Maryam was forced to leave Bahrain in September 2010 due to threat of arrest, but she returned on the 10th of February to document and report on human rights violations during the uprising planned to begin on the 14th. Since then, Maryam has been a leading activist in speaking to the international media and reporting to international organizations about the situation in Bahrain. Prior to arriving in the US, Maryam traveled to Geneva to speak at the UN Human Rights Council. Due to her activism, she has been subjected to defamation, harassment, and death threats; and now is not able to return to Bahrain due to being targeted. Her father, uncle and two brothers in law are currently in under arrest, their whereabouts unknown. Amer Bani Amer Dr. Bani Amer has been the founder and general Director of Al-Hayat Center since May 2006 and has been a young leader activist since 1994.
