CHAPTER 7 The Enduring Hopi Peter Iverson “What then is the meaning of the tricentennial observance? It is a reaffirmation of continuity and hope for the collective Hopi future.” The Hopi world is centered on and around three mesas in northeastern Arizona named First, Sec- ond, and Third. It is at first glance a harsh and rugged land, not always pleasing to the untrained eye. Prosperity here can only be realized with patience, determination, and a belief in tomorrow.1 For over 400 years, the Hopis have confronted the incursion of outside non-Indian societies. The Spanish entered Hopi country as early as 1540. Then part of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s explor- ing party invaded the area with characteristic boldness and superciliousness. About twenty Spaniards, including a Franciscan missionary, confronted some of the people who resided in the seven villages that now comprise the Hopi domain, and under the leadership of Pedro de Tovar, the Spanish over- came Hopi resistance, severely damaging the village of Kawaiokuh, and winning unwilling surrender. -

Todacheene After we get back to our country it will brighten up again and the Navajos will be as happy as the land, black clouds will rise and there will be plenty of rain. –Barboncito, 1868 Introduction Traditional Navajos believe the Diné Bahane’1 or the “Navajo creation story” and journey narrative was given to the Navajo people by the Holy Beings. Changing Woman is the Holy Being that created the four original clans of the Navajo and saved humans from the monsters that were destroying the earth. The Navajo tribe is matrilineal because Changing Woman created the clan system in the creation story. -

CLUM, Copyright, 1930 The official records heretofore quoted show that the SAN CARLOS APACHE police force had proved itself efficient and sufficient in the matter of the enforcement of order and disci- pline within their reservation from 1874 to 1880; that the great body of Apaches on that reservation were quiet and obedient during said period ; that the troops were removed from the reservation in October, 1875, and were not recalled at any time up to or during 1880. There was, however, one serious affair that occurred during the period above referred to, the exact cause of which I have not been able to ascertain. This was the breaking away from the reservation of more than half of the 453 Indians whom I brought over from Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, and located in the Gila Valley near the San Carlos sub-agency in May, 1877. In his annual report for 1878, Agent H. L. Hart mentions this outbreak briefly as follows : "On September 2, 1877, about 300 of the Warm Springs Indians left the reservation, taking with them a number of animals belonging to other Indians. They were followed by the police and Indian volunteers, and nearly all of the stock they had was captured, and 13 Indians killed, and 31 women and children brought back as prisoners by the dif- ferent parties that went in pursuit. -

Navajo Nation to Obtain an Original Naaltsoos Sání – Treaty of 1868 Document
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 22, 2019 Navajo Nation to obtain an original Naaltsoos Sání – Treaty of 1868 document WINDOW ROCK – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer are pleased to announce the generous donation of one of three original Navajo Treaty of 1868, also known as Naaltsoos Sání, documents to the Navajo Nation. On June 1, 1868, three copies of the Treaty of 1868 were issued at Fort Sumner, N.M. One copy was presented to the U.S. Government, which is housed in the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington D.C. The second copy was given to Navajo leader Barboncito – its current whereabouts are unknown. The third unsigned copy was presented to the Indian Peace Commissioner, Samuel F. Tappan. The original document is also known as the “Tappan Copy” is being donated to the Navajo Nation by Clare “Kitty” P. Weaver, the niece of Samuel F. Tappan, who was the Indian Peace Commissioner at the time of the signing of the treaty in 1868. “On behalf of the Navajo Nation, it is an honor to accept the donation from Mrs. Weaver and her family. The Naaltsoos Sání holds significant cultural and symbolic value to the Navajo people. It marks the return of our people from Bosque Redondo to our sacred homelands and the beginning of a prosperous future built on the strength and resilience of our people,” said President Nez. Following the signing of the Treaty of 1868, our Diné people rebuilt their homes, revitalized their livestock and crops that were destroyed at the hands of the federal government, he added. -

Navajo Indians of the Southwest History Worksheets
Navajo Indians of the Southwest Americans built a fort, named Fort Defiance in Navajo territory in September 1851. The Americans seized the valuable grazing land around the fort. In 1860, when the Navajo’s livestock strayed onto pastures, U.S. soldiers slaughtered a number of Navajo horses. The Navajos raided army herds in order to replenish their losses. The Navajo eventually led two attacks against the fort, one in 1856 and one in 1860. Nearly 1,000 Navajo warriors attacked the Fort in the 1860 raid, but Maneulito (below right) and Barboncito (right) did not have enough weapons to take the fort. Navajo continued their hit and run attacks. A militia unit, the Second New Mexico Mounted Volunteers, was formed to fight the Navajos and Apaches. In January 1861, Maneulito and other leaders met with Colonel Canby to sign a new peace treaty. The Navajo were anxious to get back to their crops and livestock and signed the treaty. A second fort, called Fort Fauntleroy, was built in 1860. (Later it was renamed Fort Wingate.) Manuel Chaves became the commander of the fort. The Navajo gathered at the fort for rations and friendly horse races. There had been heavy betting. Allegations of cheating in a horse race led to a fight between Chaves’s men and visiting Navajos. Chaves ordered his men to fire at the Navajo. In all, the troops killed twelve Navajo men, women, and children and wounded around forty more. In 1862, Fort Wingate was moved. The Civil War was in full swing. Navajo raids increased. Citizens in the area complained that nearly 30,000 sheep were stolen in 1862. -

Navajo Culture and Forestry Works Matthew Incha Origins and Beliefs Navajo culture provides a story of four worlds to explain their origins. The story can be told with numerous variations, but all agree on the following outline: The first world (black world) is where various spiritual beings began life and is where they were given names describing insects and animals. Altse Hastiin (first man) and Altse Asdzaa (first woman) were also created in this world. The beings were unable to live together in harmony so they passed through an opening in the east and entered the second world. Beings and animals that were in constant disagreement occupied the second world, the blue world.. First man and first woman faced tremendous hardships here, and crossed into the third world with the bluebird and coyote through an opening in the south. In the third world (yellow world) first man and first woman encountered great rivers flowing from east to west and north to south. Coyote stole water from the great rivers, which caused a great flood. To escape the rising waters the spiritual beings along with first man and first woman they climbed a reed that extended into the fourth world through an opening created by locusts. The fourth world (white world) was inhabited by beings that required the locusts to pass tests of character before the any beings from the third world could enter. The locusts passed the tests and all were allowed to enter the fourth world. In this world first man and first woman formed four sacred mountains with sacred dirt they had brought from the first world. -

They include six types: Presidential, national, general, academic, school, and special or technical. Part I of the three part roster is arranged, alphabetically, within the designated Branches of the Government, then by country, state and city. Part II provides a geographic arrangement, first by country alphabetically, then by state, city, department and bureau. Part III is a listing, alphabetically, by general subject category or type of library. Within the subjects the libraries are arranged by country, state, city, department and bureau. A descriptive explanation and index to contents precedes each of the three parts. A National Plan for Federal Library Statistics has been designed by the Federal Library Committee's Subcommittee on Statistical Programs. It is scheduled for testing in fiscal year 1971 and implementation starting in fiscal year 1972. The Plan will permit accurate, annual identification of Federal libraries. Rosters, based upon information received, will be issued on a regular basis.
