Flower Guild at Holy Ghost

The newly reestablished Holy Ghost Flower Guild is planning to decorate the church according to liturgical seasons and feasts. The Flower Guild is in need of volunteers, donations, and large matching vases to adorn the church. Parishioners now have the opportunity to donate for patron saint feast days, anniversaries, and particular devotions. Upcoming sponsorship opportunities include:

• April 25 - Feast of St. Mark & the 95th anniversary of the dedication of Holy Ghost • May 2 - May Crowning in honor of Our Lady • May 9 - Mother's Day

Parishioners may designate a regular monthly donation to the flower guild or make additional donations by writing a check to Holy Ghost Church with "altar flowers" in the memo line. Please put the check in a separate envelope marked "Flower Fund" and place it in the Sunday donation basket.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Holy Ghost Flower Guild and assisting in arranging and watering flowers, please contact Mary Ann O'Neal at [email protected].

PARISH LATIN MASS NEWS

Noon each Sunday: Sung Latin High Mass with and sacred polyphony Frequently asked questions about sacred music, part 1 Second Sunday after Easter (April 18, 2021) Proper Prayers and Readings: Angelus 631, Baronius 668, Campion 272

"GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY" From this Sunday's Gospel (John 10: 11-16):

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep. . . . As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Fa- ther: and I lay down my life for my sheep.”

Nearly 20 years ago the Church Music Association of America (CMAA) published a collection of frequently-asked- questions (FAQ) and answers about sacred music in order to help congregations and Church musicians learn more about Catholic teaching on this subject. Here are the first question and answer from the document:

Q: What is sacred music? A: Sacred music is “that which, being created for the celebration of divine worship, is endowed with a certain holy sincerity of form,” according to the Sacred Constitution of Rites in its Instruction on Music and the Liturgy (Musicam sacram, 1967, No. 4). As defined by the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 1963), sacred music surpasses merely religious music when it is joined to the liturgical rite to become “a necessary and integral part of the solemn liturgy,” whose purpose is “the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful” (No. 112). “As a manifestation of the human spirit,” said Pope St. John Paul II in 1988, “music performs a function which is noble, unique, and irreplaceable. When it is truly beautiful and inspired, it speaks to us, more than all the other arts, of goodness, virtue, peace, of matters holy and divine. And for good reason it has always been, and it will always be, an essential part of the liturgy” (December 23, 1988). Key points: Sacred music is created for the liturgical celebration of

divine worship. The Parable of the Lost Sheep Its form reflects that purpose. “What man of you that hath an hundred sheep: and if he shall It is an essential part of the liturgy--not an incidental lose one of them, doth he not leave the ninety-nine in the desert, addition. and go after that which was lost, until he find it? And when he Sacred music is distinguished from other religious music, hath found it, lay it upon his shoulders, rejoicing.” (Luke 15: 4-5) which uses non-liturgical forms, styles, or texts.
