MEDIA RELEASE 7 December 2013 FIRST‐EVER BREAKFAST WITH A HEART RAISED OVER $170,000 FOR S R NATHAN EDUCATION UPLIFTMENT FUND 1. Singapore Pools i‐SHINE (“I Shine in Serving from the Heart and In Nurturing Everyone”) Volunteers capped off the year with a unique fund‐raiser, Breakfast With A Heart 2013, held on 7 December 2013, Saturday, at Satay by the Bay. 2. About 200 corporate and individual donors contributed a minimum of $100 each to support the cause, bringing the total amount raised to $170,000, which will benefit the S R Nathan Education Upliftment Fund (the “Fund”). The Fund helps to provide children from less privileged homes with the opportunity to receive sound education and gain skills for a better life for themselves and their families. 3. Among the participants were present Members of Parliament (MPs), including Mr Masagos Zulkifli bin Masagos Mohamad, Mr Seah Kian Peng, Lim Biow Chuan, and Mr Zainudin Nordin, as well as former MPs, Mr Abdullah bin Tarmugi, Mr Sin Boon Ann, Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed and Mr Zulklifi bin Baharudin. 4. Everyone took part in a leisurely one kilometre walk from the Flower Dome to the breakfast venue, Satay by the Bay, where they savoured nasi lemak from three popular and award‐winning stalls, namely, Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak from Boon Lay Place Market; D ’Authentic Nasi Lemak from Marine Parade Central Food Centre; Singapore Pools (Private) Limited 210 Middle Road #01-01 Singapore Pools Building Singapore 188994 Tel: (65) 6216 8168 URL: www.singaporepools.com.sg RCB Reg No. 196800202G Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak from Adam Road Food Centre. Selera Rasa topped the list with 166 votes from the participants. 5. The fund‐raiser culminated in the presentation of the donation cheque for $170,000 by Mr Tan Soo Nan, Singapore Pools Chief Executive Officer, to the Fund’s Grant Advisory Committee Chair, Mr Bobby Chin. 7. To thank Mr Nathan for his support towards Singapore Pools’ i‐SHINE fundraising events, a specially‐curated photo montage of Mr Nathan’s significant milestones during his 12 years as the Sixth President of Singapore was presented to Mr Nathan’s daughter, Ms Juthika Ramanathan. The endowment is to support and promote programmes to raise the educational levels of financially challenged Singaporeans. Education is perhaps the most important social leveller, and gives children from less privileged homes an opportunity to seek a better life for themselves and their families. The endowment fund currently stands at $10 million in size and the annual returns would support educational upliftment programmes in Singapore. In his early years, he studied piano in Singapore and was later trained in Opera and Music Theatre in the United States. Leo won the NATS Opera Singing competition in Virginia, USA and the Outstanding Soloist Award in Chicago. Leo wrote and performed on the side while studying engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. In Singapore, Leo represented StarHub and won First Place, earning the coveted title of SiTF Infocomm ICT IDOL award in 2010. Leoʹs music contributions include writing the ʺSong For StarHubʺ entitled ʺTogether, Yes We Can!ʺ, composing the motivational song for AIAʹs Victor Lim district entitled ʺWeʹre Together Come What May!ʺ, and ʺCome Shine With Meʺ for Singapore Pools i‐ SHINE staff community programme. Leo is currently working on writing a full scale musical on The Odyssey of Homer, as well as composing and recording original childrenʹs songs for his two lovely children. # # # .
