Last but not least, i am extremely grateful to all the experts who participated in my study by giving out in-person interviews and contributing substantially to the current qualitative research. 2 Abstract Nowadays ports are facing a fast-changing environment which imposes many alterations to their functions. As ports are trying to adopt to these circumstances, they search for ways that can enhance their competitiveness so as to get ahead of competition. The current paper puts the second biggest port of Greece, namely the port of Thessaloniki, under scope and efforts to find out how its competitiveness can increase. With the help of a qualitative study which is twofold, having an interview questions part and a competitiveness matrix one, explores the case of the port of Thessaloniki. The participants of the study were 30 maritime experts who operate in various sectors of Thessaloniki’s port cluster. The results of the analysis indicate that currently the port of Thessaloniki does not have any competitive advantage in hand. Furthermore, the lack of superstructure in transshipments, in maritime accessibility and in general the container docks has been reported together with the advanced human capital, internal cooperation and the positive relationship between the port authority and the activities for maritime accessibility of the port. The port of Thessaloniki is proposed to follow a customer centric approach and focus on providing better quality opposed to its competitors while the already high pricing will be reassessed. The port should also invest vast amounts in upgrading its infrastructure and superstructure as well as scheduling talent acquisition and training programs that will gradually develop new human capital. Last but not least, the port is proposed to function as a logistic center that will transport containerized cargo to the Balkans via road and rail connections. 3 Table of Contents Acknowledgements     City Walk 1 “Water Front” (approximately 5 km’s). 1. The modern dock of the Port of Thessaloniki was constructed in the late 19th century and has been recently renovated. Nowadays the Museum of Photography, the Cinema Museum and the State Museum of Contemporary Art are located in especially designed warehouses within the port precinct, and host various cultural activities every year such as the International Film Festival. The dock offers splendid views of the seafront of Thessaloniki and constitutes a terrific walking and relaxation area with restaurants and bars available. Opposite the port, crossing Leoforos Nikis one can find Eleftherias’ Square, which during the 40’s was the main assembly point for the deportation of thousands of Jews to concentration camps. On the corner of Venizelou and Kalapothaki street it is easy to locate the Stein building and its famous globe on the roof, which is one of the few structures in that particular area that survived the great fire of 1917. Kalapothaki itself is a small pedestrian street, particularly vibrant during summer evenings containing plenty of bars. 2. Aristotle’s Square is named after the great philosopher Aristotle, who was born in ancient Stagira, about 55 km from Thessaloniki. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Thessaloniki, designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in 1918, following the city’s great fire in 1917. Aristotle’s square lies at the heart of the city; at the south end, there is Thermaikos Gulf and on the sides one can see several buildings with beautiful architecture. For a great view of the square and of the gulf, one can visit the rooftop coffee and restaurant of the Elektra Palace Hotel.

Secondly, the study determines the factors that are the most influential on the performance and development of the two ports. The former constitutes the most important node in the route connecting the Far East with Europe via the Suez Canal which makes it significant both to the national economy and to the economies and trade of the Eastern Mediterranean region (Psaraftis, 2007). The latter serves a wider international contestable hinterland which consists of the FYROM, southern Bulgaria, southern Serbia and the Black Sea countries. Further, Thessaloniki is the only port in Greece which is directly connected with the national rail network, it is a node in the Pan-European Corridors IV and X (Vaggelas, 2012) and it is more closely integrated into the TEN-T than the port of Piraeus. With this study, the contribution to the knowledge of the Hellenic and Eastern Mediterranean gastropod biodiversity of the studied families is continued, and an expansion of the search in other substrates and deeper waters of the NW Aegean Sea with emphasis on the minor in size species during the period from October 2008 to January 2014. Results: Thirty seven species belonging to seven families (Cerithiopsidae, Fissurellidae, Phasianellidae, Scissurellidae, Siliquariidae, Skeneidae, and Triphoridae) were identified and their biodiversity was compared with the current checklists of marine gastropod molluscs for the Hellenic Seas based on previous surveys. In this collection of gastropods, one species (Emarginula decorata Deshayes, 1863) is a new alien for the Mediterranean Sea, 14 species are new for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and 16 species are new for the Hellenic fauna (with the one above mentioned alien species included). The main identification characteristics and ecological information such as habitat, distribution, alien expansion paths to the NW Aegean Sea and origin of the species are given and discussed.

Macedonia as a Roman protectorate (168–148 BC) A few months after defeating Perseus, the last king of Macedonia, at Pydna (168 BC) the Romans found themselves facing the crucial question of how to govern the country. The question was not a new one. It had arisen thirty years before, after their victory over Perseus’ father, Philip V, at Cynoscephalae (197 BC), when the solution adopted was to preserve the kingdom within its old historical boundaries and to have the heir to the throne, Demetrius, educated in Rome, so that Macedonia would continue to fulfil its vital role as a rampart defending southern Greece against barbarian invasion. The latest war had shown that this solution was unrealistic, and that harsher measures were re- quired for more effective control over the land. The Romans still, however, avoided becoming directly involved in the government of the country, for they did not want to assume responsibility for its defence. They therefore, having set the amount of the an- nual taxation at 100 talents, or half its previous level (an unavoidable reduction given that they were abolishing some of the revenues enjoyed by the previous regime), and collected spoils and plunder worth a total of 6000 talents, opted for the solution of a Macedonia politically divided and economically enfeebled. The political fragmentation of Macedonia was achieved primarily by the creation of four self-governing “cantons” (regiones); these, with the exception of Paeonia (which, although inhabited by a single tribe, was divided under the new system), were defined on the basis of their historical boundaries.
